ttun Shenanigans and Arguments (2015 official thread)

I don't know which would be better; if he actually starts dumping these kids in droves or if he fails miserably at recruiting over them.

it's a very dangerous game to play. he either ends up with a class full of kids that he didn't really want because they were placeholders for bigger prospects that were whiffed upon, or he starts burning bridges with certain schools and recruiting regions if he starts cutting bait.

Freep thinks Harbaugh is doing just fine recruiting, thank you very much...

Recruiting: U-M's 2016 class moving up the rankings

That commitment blitz has moved U-M from outside the top 30 in rivals.com's team recruiting rankings all the way up to No. 8.

The only reason Michigan is at #8 is because they have 19 commitments, which is more than every other school not named Miami, Michigan State, Texas Tech, or Florida State (tied). Their average star rating of 3.12 puts them at 28th (right below Duke).

On the flip side, our class is rated #3 on Rivals with an average star rating of 3.88 (which is #1, a full 0.12 points above #2 FSU).

I am convinced this is exactly what Harbaugh is doing. He is locking up lower ranked kids now, but will dump them later if higher ranked kids want in.

When that happens, the Harbaugh acolytes are going to have to come up with some palatable explanation for why he took flyers on a bunch of lesser talents and then dumped them, because you know, that's slimy and something only a guy like Urban Liar or Nick Satan would do.

247 Composite. It's the most balanced.

Mike, being as objective as I possibly can-I don't see any chance that he can right the ship with this collection of "talent."
How is it not a total train wreck this year?

I see the people with this "we gonna fly under the radar and shock the world" attitude and I just laugh. You have to be able to separate fantasy from reality. The defense is going to be pretty good. It will keep them in some games. But a total question mark at QB and no real play makers on offense is not going suddenly equal playing osu in the last game of the season for the chance to go to the B1G championship game. I just don't see it happening.

But the flip side is that for all of Hokes inability to coach, time manage, and recognize his QB had a concussion, he did bring in solid recruiting classes. You can't make fun of Harbaugh for bringing in 2 and 3 star players and in the same breath say Hoke didn't bring in talent with all the 4 stars. You're basically throwing the whole star system out the window and saying you're a better talent evaluator than a collegiate head coach.

Is there a chance Harbaugh can actually coach up the "talent" Hoke left behind to win 8 or 9 games? There's always a chance. But I think something around 7 is a more realistic possibility.

So I guess the questing is: What is "righting the ship?"

Hoke brought in some talent. The problem with all that talent is that they've been living high on the hog for years. To some extent it's also a chicken-or-the-egg problem... how many of them went with Hoke because they knew it'd be relaxed and they wouldn't have to work as hard? Maybe some are of the mind that they put all their effort into HS, got their scholarship, and now it's time to reap those benefits. That seems to be the kind of 4 and 5 star kids that Hoke got... that, or he made them that way.
Hoke left some talented players behind -- but they're also mentally and physically weak at this point.
So while Harbaugh has some talent on the team... there's a lot of work to do to get them back up to speed.
At the same time, he's not currently bringing in any fresh talent.

It seems like he's going to be reliant on winning some statement games this first year so he can land more talented players towards the end of the year... or even for the 2017 class. And that assumes he and his staff can polish the turd that Hoke left them.
To some extent I give him a benefit of the doubt on that end -- he's polished some turds before with bad classes at Stanford, and then the 49ers. And the gap is much wider. He had the benefit of USC faltering. And even then it took him 3 years to get a winning record.

It's a haphazard game they're playing... he'll have to upset at least MSU or Ohio State or it all comes crashing down and he'll be stuck with those 2 and 3 star recruits trying to fill out a team that's failed to measure up thus far.
