I still think they keep him in the end. Who else is there for them?
The pipedream of getting Fickell just isn't realistic, IMO

Should either side decide to move on, there are several factors to consider....

1.) the job at ttun just isn't a top-tier job right now/anymore. They're not going to get any big-name coaches - guys like Day, Dabo, Jimbo, Kelly, Riley, Smart, Orgeron etc just aren't going to be interested.
2.) that leaves them looking at the tier II level. I suppose you can discuss guys like Fickell, Hafley, Campbell, etc. but I don't know that it'd be a huge step up for any of the more successful guys in that group to try to right that sinking ship at ttun.
3.) So, they now need to start looking at re-treads (with baggage) or (unproven) up-and-comers from the tier 3 programs.
3a.) Their Michigan-Man arrogance is going to eliminate a lot of potential guys (some justifiable, some maybe not). Either way, that'll cut a lot of names off the list when they really cannot afford to be picky.
3b.) Their refusal to allow their athletes to pursue NIL deals freely is going to set them that much further back as far as recruiting players. No coach is going to be interested in taking a job at a place where he feels like he's working against the administration before he's even hired.

In the end, I think they will have a fairly shitty season and neither Hairball nor the administration will be satisfied with it. Both sides will explore their options but once they realize they really don't have any, they'll agree to another one year deal.

#991 composite DT.

Competing with Boise State, Oregon State, Colorado, Army, UNLV, San Jose State, Utah State, Penn.

I'm guessing this means they whiffed on that "highly rated" (in the wrong direction of course) Florida DT. This guy https://247sports.com/player/tawfiq-thomas-46098526/ they were drooling over, because 300+ pounds!. He was supposed to commit like a week and a half ago but delayed his decision.

Once other school openings happen, they will fall down the list. I heard that if Helton doesn't start winning at USC, they could seriously pursue Campbell. USC is much more desirable than scUM.
And I don't just see them doing a 1yr deal, but multiple because of the 3(ish) reasons you gave. Hairball still gets them 8+ wins, Hafley can barely win at BC why would they take him at scUM
scUM admin have to be also looking at Nebraska(a former CFB power as well) and seeing how their own "prodigal son" came home and looks like hot garbage. While there's is actually winning and getting to bowl games. scUM is not at the level of Nebraska, but firing Hairball and going with an unknown can plunge them into that category FAST. 1 bowl win(even if its in the Chia Pet or Blockbuster Bowl) and fans will back off somewhat, I don't think scUM fans at this point are expecting NCs, they're at a point where they're even scared of The Game.
