Tressel & The Voting Conspiracy - Part II

This is great stuff....it reminds me of something.
I was thinking about clipping my fingernails. Sometime when they get too long it makes it harder to type....but if I cut them too short the boogers in the back of my nose are next to impossible to reach, short of using a q-tip. Since q-tips don't have the ability to "scoop" like a fingernail does, I am in a bit of a pickle. I could post a poll about this, but bkb would probably abstain, leaving me without a definitive answer....which would put me right back at the beginning of this post.
I think I'll go look around Findlay for a lemonade stand.

Oh. This is precious. The scUM posters are claiming that Tressel asked other coaches to vote Florida #2 instead of the Skunkbears. They are flipping out.
Just for the record, I think those conspiracy theories are retarded, as do most Michigan fans. Remember, the kinds of folk who follow recruiting (especially those for pay for info) tend to be the lunatic fringe of a fanbase. Present company excluded, of course. :wink2:

Some may be reasonable enough to discount this absurd conspiracy. There are a laundry list of others that GBW clutches to: intentially poor footing, special spikes, burgess arrest, bomb dogs II, etc.

The way I see it Tress shouldn't have even been allowed to Vote.

He was stuck between a rock and a hard place and chose to just sit there, smart move. He picks Florida then scUM starts whining even more than they are now and everyone says he's looking for the easy way out and is afraid of TTUN. If he picks TTUN, suddenly everyone remembers that he's beaten them 3 years in a row and accuses him of taking the easy way out. On top of that he gives Urban Meyer a speech for his kids "they don't think you deserve to be here, you show them wrong, rawr!" to help motivate them.

He did the right thing, a lot of people agree, a lot don't but any decision he made was going to be wrong. If Llllloyd Carr wants to make a big conspiracy about it he can. By now you would think he realizes that unless you go through your season un-defeated then odds are you're not going to the big game, granted this year was a little different but the rule has ALWYAS been "finish undefeated."

I don't see what the big deal with Tress abstaining is either. Even if he had voted, he would've just told everyone he voted Texas #1. :tongue2:

In all seriousness though, couldn't he have voted Michigan and Florida both #2 and left #3 blank on his ballot? Didn't Joe Pa vote USC and LSU #1 while leaving the #2 spot blank on his ballot in 2003?

You could try and trick me by having Junior post the poll. I can't resist his threads.

This article was posted earlier in another thread, copied from the ABJ, but it seems to have been truncated, and the part in bold was left out:

Ohio State's Tressel won't vote in coaches poll

Associated Press
College Football News Wire

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State's Jim Tressel did not vote in
this week's USA Today coaches' poll to avoid the perception of a
conflict of interest, a move the newspaper said could jeopardize
his future in the selection process.

"We are disappointed with coach Tressel's decision, but our
oversight role does not grant us authority to compel his
participation," USA Today's managing editor for sports Monte
Lorell said Sunday in a statement. "The agreement with the
American Football Coaches Association obligates the panel of
coaches to disclose final regular season ballots, without
exception.

"Coach Tressel's future involvement in the poll will be part of
our annual review with AFCA executive director Grant Teaff."

Told that USA Today was unhappy with him on Sunday night,
Tressel acted surprised.

"Maybe they'll fire me as a pollster," he said, half joking.

Tressel said he didn't feel right putting Ohio State in the
middle of the decision of who the Buckeyes are supposed to play for
the national title.

"I have so much respect for both Michigan and Florida," he
said. "Obviously there are only two teams that had a shot at
playing us in the national championship game. I didn't think it was
appropriate that Ohio State would cast a ballot one way or the
other. Those are two great teams and we would relish to play
either, but I didn't think it was appropriate for us to participate
in something like that."

Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, a member of the coaches poll, said
there was no scenario in which he would choose not to vote. On
Tressel's abstention, Carr said: "I thought it was real slick."

Teaff, a former coach, said Tressel's decision was "not
something that we would like to have happen, but it's kind of an
unusual circumstance."

Until last year, the coaches' ballots were not made public. Now,
the final regular-season ballots are released.

"It's just a tough situation," Teaff said.

Tressel said Teaff had floated the idea to him on Sunday morning
that there was precedent for a coach "splitting" his vote between
both two teams.

"I said that would be fine," Tressel said. "But when the next
call came back they said that wasn't the way we could do it."

The top-ranked Buckeyes (12-0) were awaiting Sunday's final Bowl
Championship Series rankings -- based in part on the coaches' poll --
to determine who they play in the national championship game on
Jan. 8 in Glendale, Ariz.

Florida finished No. 2 in the coaches' poll ahead of No. 3
Michigan.

Tressel issued a statement earlier Sunday saying that he had
consulted with athletic director Gene Smith and that "based upon
our unique position in the BCS standings, I believe it is only fair
that we not participate (in) the final poll."

The decision by Tressel not to vote could be unprecedented. AFCA
executive director of marketing and development Mel Pulliam said he
couldn't recall a coach declining to vote in the coaches' poll --
for any reason.

The Gators were ranked fourth in last week's coaches' poll and
moved past the idle Wolverines after defeating Arkansas 38-28
Saturday night in the Southeastern Conference title game. USC,
ranked second in last week's coaches' poll, fell to No. 7 after its
13-9 loss to UCLA.

Sounds like splitting the vote was considered but not allowed.

(I do like the phrase "between both two teams" though...)

Interesting side note to that article - looks like Mack Brown wanted to split his vote, too:

Brown said he asked the pollster whether he could split his vote. Told that he couldn't, Brown went with Michigan second.
"In some ways I wished I had done the same thing Jim did," Brown said. "Both are great teams. Michigan got punished for not having a conference championship."

(Oh, and this thread is complete now that BKB has given us his $0.02 worth. )

The way I see it... and this is my opinion.

Coach Tressel thought that scUM is the #2 team and deserving of the spot. However, he could not vote them #2 since scUM would be playing us for the NC.

He clearly stated before that the team must win it's conference in order to play for NC. This would not be the case for scUM. He didn't think FLA was #2. Since he was not allowed to rank both teams at #2... he opt out of voting completely.

Again, that's my thought. Who knows what the true reason why coach Tressel didn't vote. Idiots like Mike Leach has no right to bash coach Jim Tressel. Coach did commit to voting in the coaches pole, but he was stripped away of a right to vote two teams at #2...thus, his commitment to vote becomes optional.

Oh my god, you're not going to believe this.

I'm sitting here at my desk, and Tressel comes in, punches me in the nuts, takes my stapler, and runs out of the office calling me names and giving me the finger.

What the fuck is that all about? I don't even know the guy. Not voting? I don't want to hear it.

Hell, I can't even sue him... not in this town.
