Ohio State football
Winning out can result in BCS bid
Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, Orange still on OSU's bowl radar

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

This is shaping up to be one of the great down-to-the-wire finishes in Big Ten football history. In essence, there are three teams tied for the lead with two weeks left. The national reaction: Yawn. Who cares? Are you not paying attention to what's going on in the Big 12 South?
That may be so, but there is still a strong chance the Big Ten could have two teams make Bowl Championship Series games for the eighth time in the 11-year history of the BCS, and one of them could be Ohio State.
The national reaction: Huh? How could that be? What about all those deserving teams -- Texas Tech, Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State -- in the Big 12 South?
According to BCS rules, a conference can have no more than two teams play in the five BCS games: the championship game, plus the Rose, Sugar, Orange and Fiesta bowls. Since the champions of the six primary BCS leagues -- the Big Ten, Big 12, Southeastern, Atlantic Coast, Big East and Pacific 10 -- are guaranteed spots, that leaves four at-large berths.
Assuming Utah of the Mountain West Conference or Boise State of the Western Athletic Conference earns one of those, and figuring the second-best teams in the SEC and Big 12 do, too, that leaves one at-large spot up for grabs in the Fiesta, Sugar or Orange.
Which circles back to the Big Ten scenario. Penn State was gunning for a spot in the national title game before it was upset by Iowa on Saturday. That leaves the Nittany Lions (9-1, 5-1), Michigan State (9-2, 6-1) and OSU (8-2, 5-1) at the front headed into the home stretch.

Ohio State still in Rose Bowl contention, but do they really want to go?

November 10, 4:36 PM
by Andy Zoric, Ohio State Buckeyes Examiner
Here?s the bad news for anyone who is a Big Ten fan: the conference will not be represented in the national championship this year. Here?s the good news for Ohio State: Chances are now decreasing that the Buckeyes will have to play USC (7) again in the Rose Bowl.

After Saturday?s matches in college football the Buckeyes make no headway in the BCS standings, remaining 11th ranked. This despite losses by higher ranked Penn State (3) and Oklahoma State (8). Oklahoma State lost big to second-ranked Texas Tech and a big win by Georgia (10) shuffled the standings around the Buckeyes, leaving them stranded at 11th.

The Buckeyes are currently tied for first in the Big Ten sharing a one-loss record with both Penn State and Michigan State. However, with the Nittany Lions welcoming Michigan State to Happy Valley to end the season that tie will be broken one way or another.

Ohio State can still get to the Rose Bowl should Penn State fall in that November 22 match-up (or before, but Indiana currently only has one conference win). Ohio State would still have to win out against Illinois, a team that has given them headaches in the past, and Michigan, a team that has been given headaches all season.

Recapping this week?s game: it was a 55-yard run for touchdown by Chris ?Beanie? Wells that started up the offense for Ohio State. The run had struggled early and all offensive movement came on third and long via Terrelle Pryor?s arm.

For Northwestern, quarterback Mike Kafka seemed like a one-man offense throwing and running the QB option frequently in the first half. As the game wore on he threw more either because of the score difference or because he did not want to get hit so often by James Laurinaitis.

If OSU makes it to a BCS game, there are still a few teams that I would not want to watch them play against.

Florida: Yeah they run up the score but watching the games, they are playing as good of football as anyone. They wouldn't put up 50 points against a real defense like ours but if we were to lose to them it would just bring in all the SEC homers taunts for another year.

Texas: Even after their loss to TT, I think they're the best team in the Big 12. They came back from getting dominated and if their freshman makes that INT they win the game. Very dangerous and winning would depend soley on how many points we could score. Another performance like the PSU game would not be enough.

USC: Part of Me would like to see the rematch and see what a difference Beanie and Pryor will make. Then the other part of me remembers how disappointing the game was back in September. It would be in their backyard, but with how OSU's fans travel they definitely wouldn't have home field advantage. Still, I think I would rather wait till the game next year at the Shoe to see what Pryor can do.

Oregon State: There would be nothing to gain from beating this team. If we lose, the Pac 10 as well as the media woudl start talking about how much better they are than the Big 10.

ACC Champ, Big East Champ, or Non-BCS team: Same as Oregon State. Nothing to gain, Everything to lose.

And as for the people I want to see Ohio State play against (and win)

Alabama: This is the ideal opponent. An overrated SEC team that will most likely get dominated by Florida in the SEC championship. They barely beat a mediocre LSU, barely beat a bad Kentucky. I think OSU has a very good chance of beating them and that it would help to bolster the national image of the Big 10 (plus give Tressel his first bowl win against the SEC.) I have a feeling, however, that even if we win, the media will spin it as Alabama being extremely overrated and that the Big 10 still is "a really weak conference".

Oklahoma: They choke in bowl games. Their offensive line is good, but our secondary can stop Bradford from making a lot of big plays and they would score under 30 points. Their defense is weak, and I think Pryor and Beanie could put up some good numbers.

And the wildcard is TT:
I don't know whether or not I'd want OSU to play them. They can run up points, but against our defense that would be a pretty difficult task. Their defense isn't all that great, and TP & co. could put up some points.

All that is on the basis of having a nice bowl WIN and getting some national respect back for the OSU football program as well as the Big 10. If we can't have Alabama or Oklahoma, I would be fine with playing against an ACC, Big East, or Non-BCS team and completely dominating them. But for a great game, I'd want to see OSU-Alabama.

CBS's bowl projections.

Title: Florida-Oklahoma
Rose: USC-Penn St
Fiesta: tOSU-Texas Tech (I don't think this will happen, see below)
Sugar: Bama-Utah (New Orleans full of Mormons, there's a match)
Orange: Pitt-N.C.

They have PSU and USC in the Rose, which is fine; that scenario happens if those teams win out and Oregon State loses at least once.

They have Oklahoma and Florida in the BCS Title game, which is OK. That assumes that Oklahoma beats both Texas Tech and Oklahoma State, and gets into the Big 12 title game because they will have the highest BCS ranking among the 3-way tie of Okla-Tex-TexTech (Big 12's two-way tie-breaker is head-to-head, for a 3-way where they all beat each orher, it's BCS ranking). That's possible, but I would rank Texas ahead of Oklahoma in that case. That's a huge decision for the voters.

They then have tOSU playing Texas Tech in the Fiesta Bowl. I don't think that will happen, because if Florida and Oklahoma are BCS 1 and 2, Texas should be BCS #3, which guarantees them an at-large spot, and since they're the second Big 12 team in the BCS, Texas Tech would be shut out and probably go to the Cotton Bowl. Texas only has to win at Kansas and at home against aTm in order to finish 11-1.

The BCS #3 team is guaranteed a BCS bid. If the #3 is a Conference Champion with an automatic bid, then #4 is guaranteed a bid.

They also have Bama-Utah in the Sugar, and N.C.-Pitt in the Orange, which are logical.

Zoric just doesn't get it.
How is Georgia's 42-38 victory over a team that had just lost by 58 points to Florida considered "big?"

Compare that with the "stranded" Buckeyes, who convincingly defeated the 23rd ranked Northwestern Wildcats who had just knocked off the 17th ranked team.

But unless Georgia miraculously makes the SEC title game, they will be the ones left stranded out of BCS consideration!

We don't need to jump Georgia to make the BCS bowl.

They can't make it to the SEC Title game.... it's already Bama vs Florida.

and I don't care who we face in a BCS Bowl (if we make one)... I would prefer Texas or Bama' because I think we match-up very well with those two teams...

Go Bucks! :oh:

In that case, if Georgia made it to the SEC title game, it would be even more "miraculous" than what I said!

Agree with you about the match up with either Texas or Bama.

I would like to see Alabama vs Ohio State. It should be a nice historical bowl game with both teams having a lot on the line. Two large fanbases against each other in a bowl game that does not favor one or the other, like USC/OSU or LSU/OSU in Sugar Bowl last year or even possibly UF/OSU in Orange Bowl.

Nothing changed yesterday, except eliminating the possibility of a 3-way tie in the Big Ten if PSU had lost to Indiana. If the Big Ten has a tie it will be only two teams, and the tiebreaker will be the head-to-head result.

If tOSU and MSU win on Saturday, tOSU goes to the Rose, almost certainly to face either Oregon State or USC.

If Penn State and tOSU win, Penn State goes to the Rose. If Oregon State wins their last 2 games (at Arizona and home against Oregon), they go to the Rose. If USC wins out against ND and UCLA, they would get the last at-large spot, assuming that either Boise, Utah or Ball State qualify for an automatic spot. The Big 12 and the SEC are certainly getting two BCS bids this year.

So, to get a BCS bid, tOSU basically needs to win and have either Penn State, Oregon State, or USC lose.

The Orange Bowl gets last choice this year, so it's very unlikely that tOSU will be going there. That bowl will be stuck with the ACC winner against either the Big East winner or Utah/Boise/Ball State.

tOSU's most likely matchups at this point are the Fiesta Bowl against Texas, or if the Fiesta Bowl selects a nearby undefeated Utah team; the Sugar Bowl against the Florida/Alabama loser. If the Rose Bowl is Penn State-Oregon State, an 11-1 USC would get an at-large bid, and tOSU would go to the Capital One Bowl and probably play Georgia.

I wouldn't mind playing Miami in the Orange Bowl, just to drive the point home for those Canes fans still whining about 2002-3. Bama in the Sugar wouldn't be bad and Oklahoma in the Fiesta would be fine, too. (I think Texas will play Florida for the NC)

Playing USC in the Rose doesn't excite me because we already have our rematch on tap for the Shoe. Not too crazy about playing Tech, either. They're having a good year, but they don't carry much more cache than Utah, yet.

Playing Oregon State, Boise or Utah doesn't interest me at all. I'd almost rather play Georgia in the Citrus Bowl (or whatever they're calling it now) on New Year's Day.
