tOSU's BCS Bowl possibilities

i'll keep this post short.

We win out and Oregon State loses we're in.

SEC 2 bids
B12 2 bids
ACC 1
Big E 1
Pac 10 1 (if oOSU loses)
Non BCS 1 (boise or utah...no way both get in)
B10 OSU/PSU

the only thing that could screw us at this point is oOSU winning out. If both boise and UTAH lose, that gives us a little cushon.
ok maybe that wasn't short....

Let's hope that they don't select two Non-BCS teams. Both ranked ahead of us in BCS and they don't play each other. so they can win out.
One of them lose... we are in (Orange or Fiesta).

I completely agree on the NC game, and I think PSU will play USC in the Rose. The Sugar could definitely play that way, too. Our best BCS bets are the Fiesta and the Orange. I'm rooting for the Orange. The last time we played in it Woody was our coach (we beat Colorado, 27-10, for Woody's last bowl victory).

We can't realistically expect to play in the BCS title game every year. After losing the last two we really were going to have to impress the hell out of everybody to get a third one, and we haven't quite done it.

If we can play the ACC champ in the Orange I'd be happy with it.

The Orange bowl would be tough, because they will be stuck with the ACC champ and have the last selection for an at large, which would prolly leave them stuck with an automatically qualifing mid major (which there looks like there is going to be, Utah or Boise). Unless the Fiesta bowl thought a team like Utah would draw a big crowd (cause their close) and decide to take them instead

Could a B10 championship game solve this?

Championship games do nothing but create problems.

Texas, Texas Tech and Oklahoma are all in the same division. Missouri wins the conference championship game and they could hose the entire conference.

Championship games do not match the best two teams from the conference - they match the winners of two potentially very unequal divisions.

We don't need no stinkin' championship game. With the division format, the top two teams in the conference often don't meet in that game - just the two division champs.

Missouri is looking like the fifth best team in the Big XII, and they're probably going to play in the conference championship game because the other four aren't in their division. I don't see a need to replicate such a process.

Yea the Big 12 has become pretty unbalanced with their divison formats (The south outweighing the north).

I once came up with a divisional layout if Notre Dame joined the Big Ten that would allow basically all the traditional Big Ten rivalries to stay in place (including ND's rivalries) with each team playin every team in their division, 2 "fixed" teams from the other division that they would play every year from the other division and the 1 rotating matchup with a team from the other division. It actually worked out to be decently balanced based on the schools traditional power, although obviously u never know when a teams going to go into the toilet (See: Nebraska).

Interesting point about Oregon St winning out.

As late as we are into the season, Ore St has only played ONE of the top five teams in the PAC 10. They finish with three, four and five.

I hope Pitt wins the BE and we play them. Heres why...I want to continue to recruit PA. Beating the snot out of them would piss MM off!!!! As Musberger always says "this is a good ole Buckeye buttkickin".

I would love to play an ACC team. We haven't played one since NCST IIRC. A B10 title, 10+ win season, beating Michigan, and winning another BCS bowl would be nice.

I thought only one non-BCS team could get in?

There are a couple of ways for a non-BCS team to be guaranteed a bid (being in the top-12 of the BCS is the simplest way). If two of them qualify, the higher rated one is guaranteed the bid, and the other one is available as an at-large team. It's unlikely that two would be selected, but it's possible.

Yea at the end of the day its a money issue, the orange bowl will get stuck with 1 because they have the last pick. The rest of the bowls are going to pick the at large team that can bring them the most money, and draw the most interest in the game. Ohio State or Utah/Boise State isn't really much of a question

If we win out...good things will happen. The great thing about the Capital One bowl is that it's a New Years Day bowl against one of the top SEC teams. So if we win out, and we go to that bowl, it'll be sweet. As far as being a fan, i'm not worried about getting the BCS bowl or not. That's about money and stuff. Sure i'd take a BCS bowl over the Capital One bowl, but it's not like it would be a bigger game, at least to me. The Rose Bowl would be, no doubt. Rose Bowl would be better than anything...much much better. But, if we win out, and don't get a BCS bowl somehow, I won't be upset at all. Going 11-2 and beating a SEC team would be sweet, I think. I just really want to win the next two. 10 regular season wins would be great. If we can win out, and beat a great team in a bowl, we have a shot at being in the top 5. Since 2002, we have only been outside the top 5 at the end of the season once. No other team can say that, except USC. Man the Tressel era has been great.

We would need a lot of assistance, after this weekend. If State Penn and Michigan State lose, then our computer ratings will suffer. Note that we dropped in the computer ratings despite the accomplishments at Northwestern.

Realistically, Boise State and Utah play patsies, except for the Utah and BYU game, which could go the other way.

I don't like our chances.

I think that we are discounting the interests that the bowls have in maintaining the current BCS arrangements versus a national playoff system.

The wildcard that I see is President Obama. I know, stay with me a minute. If you look at the computer sites (Billingsley is one) and the BCS site, there is a lot of defensive posts directed at President Obama and his comments about needing a playoff. I can't imagine the President messing around with the college national championship, but the argument against the BCS is that non-BCS teams don't have an equal chance.

I think we can conclude that the chances of two BCS teams playing in BCS bowls, if they are both ranked in the top 10, is much higher this year than ever before. How likely is it? I guess we can only see as the conversation continues in coming weeks.

Whatever, the Buckeyes must not only win out, but win out convincingly. I think that is why Tressel let the offense loose this week in Evanston. We need to now put up big numbers on offense. We need to look top 10. For the first time in a long time, our name is a bit of a hindrance. We need the style points. And if we get into a good bowl, we need to win.

Fiesta Bowl could be in OSU's future

By Rusty Miller
Associated Press

Monday, November 10, 2008
It's one of the best times of the year for football fans ? all that speculation about where their team is headed in a bowl game.
Keep in mind that the unthinkable will likely happen over the next few weeks. After all, it has before. Remember a year ago when West Virginia only had to beat a 3-7 Pitt team at home to get into the national championship game?
The hard part is that almost any team in the top 20 could still have the tumblers fall in the right sequence to steal a berth in a big bowl game. And maybe 10 could end up in the national championship game (this year in Miami on Jan. 8) under the right circumstances.
"It's still very early in the season," Orange Bowl Committee CEO Eric Poms told the Salt Lake (Utah) Tribune. "A lot has changed in the higher-ranked teams in the last couple of weeks and things happen so fast in December, it's still early."
Still, it's fun to guess. Here are some intriguing possibilities for the Buckeyes, based on them winning their games at Illinois and at home against Michigan:
Capital One Bowl, Jan. 1, 2009, 1 p.m., in Orlando, Fla., against SEC championship loser Florida. This requires Penn State winning out and being the Big Ten's lone BCS representative. Ohio State's opponent would likely be Florida if it loses to Alabama in the SEC title game, sustaining its second loss.
