tOSU's BCS Bowl possibilities

Orange Bowl reps at our game today at NU. That could be an interesting trip and a chance to get back on track in BCS games. It's been quite awhile since we played there - it was Woody's last bowl win in 1977 (27-10 over Colorado).

Here are the updated scenarios after Penn State's loss to Iowa.

If tOSU wins out, and MSU beats PSU, tOSU goes to the Rose Bowl due to the 2-way head-to-head tie-break against MSU.

If tOSU wins out, and PSU wins out, PSU goes to the Rose Bowl. tOSU would likely get an at-large bid as long as USC makes the Rose Bowl. But if Oregon State wins out, they own the tie-breaker against USC and would go to the Rose Bowl.

If the Rose Bowl is Oregon-State-Penn State, tOSU would probably NOT get an at-large bid (SEC, Big 12, USC, and Boise/Utah would get them).

The selection process would be:
#1/#2 Alabama/Florida winner #1/#2 Texas Tech/Texas/Oklahoma Big 12 Champion
Rose: Oregon State/Cal automatic
Rose: Penn State automatic
Orange: ACC champ automatic
Sugar: 1st replacement pick: 1-loss Bama, USC, or 2-loss Florida
Fiesta: 2nd replacement pick for Big 12 winner: Texas/Oklahoma (if they have only 1 loss, they're #3 or #4, and Fiesta has a relationship with the Big 12)
Fiesta: USC, or 2-loss Florida
Sugar: Big East Champion or Boise St/Utah (whichever of those 2 is higher but inside the BCS top-12)
Orange: Big East Champion or Boise St/Utah (whichever of those 2 is higher but inside the BCS top-12)

Here's the likely selection process if USC and Penn State are in the Rose Bowl:
#1/#2 Alabama-Florida winner plays #1/#2 Texas Tech-Texas-Oklahoma Big 12 Champ
Rose: USC and Penn State automatic
Orange: ACC champ automatic
Sugar: 1st replacement pick: 1-loss Bama or 2-loss Florida (Fiesta would have to approve selection of Texas, which is unlikely)
Fiesta: 2nd replacement pick: Texas/Oklahoma
Fiesta: tOSU
Sugar: Big East Champion or Boise St/Utah (whichever of those 2 is higher but inside the BCS top-12)
Orange: Big East Champion or Boise St/Utah (whichever of those 2 is higher but inside the BCS top-12)

This is more of a Big Ten title post rather than a bowl post, but I think fits well here.

Here are the scenarios I can think of for the three contenders. If anyone comes up with any others, please post them.

Ohio State wins the Big Ten OUTRIGHT if:

  • Ohio State wins out
  • Penn State loses to Indiana, then beats MSU
Ohio State is Big Ten Co-Champ in a two-way tie with MSU and wins tiebreaker if:
tiebreaker: head-to-head

  • Ohio State wins out
  • MSU beats Penn State
Ohio State is Big Ten Co-Champ in a two-way tie with Penn State and loses tiebreaker if:
tiebreaker: head-to-head

  • Ohio State wins out
  • Penn State wins out
Ohio State is Big Ten Co-Champ in three-way tie with Penn State and MSU and loses tiebreaker if:
tiebreaker: head-to-head

  • Ohio State loses a game
  • Penn State loses to Indiana
  • Penn State beats MSU
MSU wins the Big Ten outright if:

  • Ohio State loses a game
  • MSU beats Penn State
MSU is Big Ten Co-Champ in two-way tie with Ohio State and loses tiebreaker if:
tiebreaker: head-to-head

  • Ohio State wins out
  • MSU beats Penn State
MSU is Big Ten Co-Champ in three-way tie with Penn State and Ohio State and loses tiebreaker if:
tiebreaker: head-to-head

  • Ohio State loses a game
  • Penn State loses to Indiana
  • Penn State beats MSU
Penn State wins the Big Ten outright if:

  • Ohio State loses a game
  • Penn State wins out
Penn State is Big Ten Co-Champ in a two-way tie with Ohio State and wins tiebreaker if:
tiebreaker: head-to-head

  • Ohio State wins out
  • Penn State wins out
Penn State is Big Ten Co-Champ in a three-way tie and wins tiebreaker if:
tiebreaker: head-to-head

  • Ohio State loses a game
  • Penn State loses to Indiana
  • Penn State beats MSU

Wow that was really confusing, lol.

Ohio State is Big Ten Co-Champ in three-way tie with Penn State and MSU and loses tiebreaker if:
tiebreaker: number of games vs. FCS opponents

  • Ohio State loses a game
  • Penn State loses to Indiana
  • MSU beats Penn State
That's not right

jlb - Penn State wins both 3-way ties because they will have defeated both MSU and tOSU in those scenarios, and that is applied before the FCS thing, please edit your original post.

Otherwise, good summary.

The way I see it if we can win out we will get a BCS game. In the other thread someone said that we might not if USC doesn't win the Pac 10, but IMO if the Orange Bowl can pick between OSU and USC (with 1 extra loss) they would pick us. OSU fans would fill that stadium and I'd love to play the ACC chump.

If Oregon State wins out, it's a choice between a 1-loss USC and tOSU for the last at-large spot. It's explained in my post of 6:58 p.m. Eastern.

And the Orange Bowl gets last choice, so they'll likely be stuck with Utah/Boise or the Big East Champ.

You expect me to read before posting? :p

We are still earlier than the point in last season where the Buckeyes lost and had supposedly played themselves out of an NC game berth. If OSU wins out I am very confident that enough other chips will fall to get OSU an at-large berth.

Who needs a stinkin' at-large berth anyway?! The Bucks can still win the Big Ten title and get the automatic bid!
