tOSU's BCS Bowl possibilities

This is more of a Big Ten title post rather than a bowl post, but I think fits well here.

Here are the scenarios I can think of for the three contenders. If anyone comes up with any others, please post them.

Ohio State wins the Big Ten OUTRIGHT if:

  • Ohio State wins out
  • Penn State loses to Indiana, then beats MSU
Ohio State is Big Ten Co-Champ in a two-way tie with MSU and wins tiebreaker if:
tiebreaker: head-to-head

  • Ohio State wins out
  • MSU beats Penn State
Ohio State is Big Ten Co-Champ in a two-way tie with Penn State and loses tiebreaker if:
tiebreaker: head-to-head

  • Ohio State wins out
  • Penn State wins out
Ohio State is Big Ten Co-Champ in three-way tie with Penn State and MSU and loses tiebreaker if:
tiebreaker: head-to-head

  • Ohio State loses a game
  • Penn State loses to Indiana
  • Penn State beats MSU
MSU wins the Big Ten outright if:

  • Ohio State loses a game
  • MSU beats Penn State
MSU is Big Ten Co-Champ in two-way tie with Ohio State and loses tiebreaker if:
tiebreaker: head-to-head

  • Ohio State wins out
  • MSU beats Penn State
MSU is Big Ten Co-Champ in three-way tie with Penn State and Ohio State and loses tiebreaker if:
tiebreaker: head-to-head

  • Ohio State loses a game
  • Penn State loses to Indiana
  • Penn State beats MSU
Penn State wins the Big Ten outright if:

  • Ohio State loses a game
  • Penn State wins out
Penn State is Big Ten Co-Champ in a two-way tie with Ohio State and wins tiebreaker if:
tiebreaker: head-to-head

  • Ohio State wins out
  • Penn State wins out
Penn State is Big Ten Co-Champ in a three-way tie and wins tiebreaker if:
tiebreaker: head-to-head

  • Ohio State loses a game
  • Penn State loses to Indiana
  • Penn State beats MSU

Could a B10 championship game solve this?

We are still earlier than the point in last season where the Buckeyes lost and had supposedly played themselves out of an NC game berth. If OSU wins out I am very confident that enough other chips will fall to get OSU an at-large berth.

Who needs a stinkin' at-large berth anyway?! The Bucks can still win the Big Ten title and get the automatic bid!

If MSU can beat PSU I'm a big Or St. fan. Otherwise I'm hoping they drop one of the remaining 2 games. USC still has a chance to make the title game if the cards fall the right way. There are a lot of Big 12 teams in front of them with the SEC champ getting one of the spots. Too bad all the good Big 12 teams are in the south. The non BCS conf. teams screw everything up.

Penn State's loss today hurts Ohio State's chances of getting an at large bid.

I don't think this is true. It just made the Rose Bowl less likely.

A 10-2 tOSU team still gets selected for an at-large bid; unless a 1-loss USC team loses the Rose Bowl automtic bid to an Oregon State team that wins out and owns the head-to-head tiebreaker over USC.

We don't need no stinkin' championship game. With the division format, the top two teams in the conference often don't meet in that game - just the two division champs.

Missouri is looking like the fifth best team in the Big XII, and they're probably going to play in the conference championship game because the other four aren't in their division. I don't see a need to replicate such a process.

That's a mighty big "unless". :wink2:

The first step would be talking to Jim Delany about adding a 12th team to the Big 10. I think that would be a discussion for another place.

This would not solve it any better than the system we have now. A Big 10 championship game would crown the Big Ten champion. If we had three teams in the Big Ten East with one loss, we would have to have a tie breaker system to choose a Division champ. We have tie breakers to pick the Big Ten champion now. People will complain with whatever system is in place. It is what people do.

Yep. It appears OSU's BCS chances are in OSU's AND OSU's hands.

USC will not make the NCG. They struggled with Arizona and Cal. USC is overated. It's unfortunate we did not play them with Wells healthy and Pryor having a few games under his belt.

The media wants B12 and SEC teams matched up in the BCS bowls. This will determine which conference is the best...hype...hype...and more hype.

NC Big 12 champ vs. SEC champ
Sugar Bowl B12 #2 and SEC #2
RB B10 PSU/OSU vs. USC
Fiesta Bowl BSU/Utah vs. BE champ/B10#2
Orange Bowl OSU/MSU if they beat PSU/BE champ vs. ACC champ

Oregon State has to play @ Arizona, Cal, and Oregon...IMO they drop one. There will be only 1 non-bcs team in a BCS bowl.

Win out and play in a BCS bowl and share the B10 title...not what we wanted but not bad.

The Ornage Bowl has the last pick. IMO the fiesta and Sugar bowls are interchangeable.

I guess what you are saying here is Oklahoma beats Texas Tech and Oklahoma State beats Oklahoma and then what.... There still might be to Big XII teams ahead of Ohio State but the at large might not be as desirable coming out of the Big XII.

What would happen if Florida beat Alabama in the SEC championship game? Ohio State still more desirable than a one loss to Alabama? Just trying to sort things out sort of:)

I completely agree on the NC game, and I think PSU will play USC in the Rose. The Sugar could definitely play that way, too. Our best BCS bets are the Fiesta and the Orange. I'm rooting for the Orange. The last time we played in it Woody was our coach (we beat Colorado, 27-10, for Woody's last bowl victory).

We can't realistically expect to play in the BCS title game every year. After losing the last two we really were going to have to impress the hell out of everybody to get a third one, and we haven't quite done it.

If we can play the ACC champ in the Orange I'd be happy with it.

I would love to see us go to a BCS bowl, but I would like more for us to get an SEC team and drill them. I think that would do wonders for the team and its morale next year. Whoever we play, we need a bowl win again.

i'll keep this post short.

We win out and Oregon State loses we're in.

SEC 2 bids
B12 2 bids
ACC 1
Big E 1
Pac 10 1 (if oOSU loses)
Non BCS 1 (boise or utah...no way both get in)
B10 OSU/PSU

the only thing that could screw us at this point is oOSU winning out. If both boise and UTAH lose, that gives us a little cushon.

ok maybe that wasn't short....
