Game Thread tOSU vs. Virginia Tech, Sept 6th @ 8pm ET, ESPN & ESPN3 Skycam

Got my tickets to take my son Henry, age 12 as a reward for straight A's to finish out the school year. Really glad he did this for me....and himself!!

Question: I have only been to one game in the Shoe, vs. Miami a few years ago. This will be his first visit. He loves tOSU like me but neither of us has even seen campus or the restaurant/pub areas of Columbus that need to be seen (college vibe) so I need some advice how to spend my Saturday.

As a quick side trip, you might stop into Conrads and buy him a souvenir as a memento of the day. They're not far from the stadium, and loaded with OSU goodies. They're kind of an institution of sorts, themselves.

I don't know nearly enough about the defense (or the OL, for that matter) to make any kind of comfortable prediction. However, given the fact it's a night game, at the Shoe, I think the good guys come out on top. I just have no clue whether it'll be by 3 or 33.

Agreed. The only action I would be pissed at people standing is for the halftime show. That's sit on my ass and enjoy the show while I rest my pathetically weak legs time.

Uh.......given the way things are with TBDBITL, expect a hell of a standing ovation when they come pouring out of the north tunnel. No amount of PC ninny-nannies will be able to stop it. Just sayin'. :urban2:

As a season-ticket holder, and a blue-hair, I stand and cheer more than most of the younger fans around me. And standing and cheering is never going to be something I'll complain about. But standing between plays and NOT cheering - just to be an annoying pr*ck about things - that, I'll complain about. And it's usually guys who have consumed far more alcohol before and during the game than I could ever drink, and it's almost always guys who are too drunk to effectively cheer when something exciting is actually happening on the field.

I've never, ever, seen anyone be hassled by the redcoats for cheering enthusiastically, even when others in their section seem glued to the bench. I hope I never do.

Oh, by the way, I hate night games. Getting home at 2 AM is not what I call a good time.

1.) Seeing the campus (we travel a bunch and I like to expose my son to lots of college campuses)

Are you coming in Friday or Saturday? Saturday will be a log-jam for cruising campus. One area that is a *must see* is behind the south stands between the stadium & the twin towers - Buckeye Grove

2.) Pregame Skull Session and/or Quick Cals, I assume they don't conflict...QC is just before kick off?

Not sure when QC are, I've only seen it once, Skull Session is 2 hours before kick - I think QC are before the team heads back into the locker room after warm ups.

Skull Session > QC in my IMO.

3.) Experience tailgating some (but we don't know anyone to hook up with, when or where)

You won't have any problem with the "where" - there's a friendly group over off of Norwich behind Varsity Club - tons of action in the parking lot of the stadium plus many other lots (Lane on both sides of the Schott, Lane at Hightower apartments is a party open to all, the RV lot is usually poppin' - I would imagine some are doing the all night party, especially if hog is on the menu for Saturday, and other hard cores will start around the noon hour.)

4.) Watching some of the other good games that day: USC vs. Stanford 3:30pm, Sparty vs. Oregon 6:30pm (won't be able to watch very much of this one)...thinking I might hook up with a tailgate crew with a good TV ?!?

Norwich group will have a TV, unfortunate, we stopped tailgating in the west lot about 4 years ago. We made a 6 year run, and no, I don't miss setting up at 7am for noon kicks or leaving at 3am for 8pm kicks. I do miss hearing the stadium erupt right before a big play would come through the satellite dish.

The Hightower party will have a jumbotron going all day.

Hope this helps man.

Skull Session > QC in my IMO.

The Quick Cals are always done at the 23:00 minute mark prior to the start of the game, so seeing the Skull Session and the Quick Cals is completely feasible, although the Skull Session is much better to see.

It's all fun and games until you've had someone complain about you standing up when it was 4th down in a close game. The sad part is it's happened to me more than once on a touchdown too. If people are only going there to sit on their asses all day and complain about people who want to get up and cheer, why go?

The point being - if I paid my money for a ticket (not to mention parking, dealing with the nominally intelligent Columbus drivers, etc), I am going to cheer as I see fit, and not as someone else sees fit. Your observation about the atmosphere becoming stuffy is right on point in my IMO.

Mike, I know it's a two way street. No one wants to see the 'Shoe become "the morgue," but it is possible to yell while seated. I know there are some who complain anytime anyone starts to stand up regardless of the reason or cause. However, when a section of fans stand they force the rest of the section to stand with them in order to see. I stand up for exciting plays, when the action all but pulls you out of your seat. Then I sit right back down. Making noise, supporting the Buckeyes and enjoying the game shouldn't require rude behavior from fans.

One last, slightly off-topic comment: Despite my years in the army and a proclivity to use certain four letter words as nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, personal(ized) pronouns and something to fill the air space, I stopped enjoying going to NFL games because of the unbelievable level of vulgarity and menacing tone of many of the liquid-loudmouth-fueled male fans. I've not heard anything approaching it at a college game and I hope I never do. (I understand that Texas fans were treated very poorly in 2005, but I think that may have had something to do with the game being played before school opened.)

I am pre-blue hair, but I'll be there before I know it. The moment I begin to get pissed off at people for standing up at a Buckeye game is hopefully the moment I'll realize that I should be watching every game from the couch. No offense to anyone here, just my own approach...
