Game Thread tOSU vs. Virginia Tech, Sept 6th @ 8pm ET, ESPN & ESPN3 Skycam

I think beating Ohio State at night in Ohio Stadium is a tall order for anyone, except for a Vince Young led Texas squad and a USC team coached by Pete Carroll - and Va Tech is no where near the quality of those programs. Even USC and Texas were fortunate to win. Tech does have a great man for a head coach, a very good and proven DC, and I think their QB play is going to be good with Brewer. So, they have some tools to work with.

Those losses to USC and Texas were painful because Ohio State was in position to win, but because the game was close late, the door was left open for a dropped pass, some last minute drives, and some other BS to sink them. But we have Urban and Herman now. They will bury someone early if they can. People complain about blowouts. I love them. The PSU game was one of my favorites last year. A team comes into Ohio Stadium full of piss and vinegar, ready to beat the mighty Buckeyes, and before the half they are recalibrating their hopes to: "Let's not get embarrassed too badly."

Burying someone early isn't easy. OSU has this QB that we are trying to protect by not asking him to do too much, and an OL that may limit what Herman can conjure up out of the playbook, so maybe I'm unrealistic to think it's even possible. But you have to take the belief out of a team to beat them, and that doesn't happen by being cautious. Hopefully the Bucks have had a good week of practice, have found more things to hang their hat on offensively, and Herman can put more on JT and the OL's plate they can handle --> more on Foster's plate that he can't handle. Just don't let this bunch of turkies believe and hang around too long.

3) If you had to recommend one place to eat and have a drink that typifies OSU and the OSU campus/football, where would that one place be?

Others have said Varsity Club and I will second that, but as a backup plan or second option I'd say Little Bar, which is just past BW3 on High St. They have a huge outdoor tailgate, beer booths, and projector screen in their parking lot called "Tiny Gate." Will be a good atmosphere. Then go and check out the tailgates down by the stadium if you're up to it.

Varsity Club early Friday evening is fine, but you have about zero chance to get in and get served on Saturday. The "bars" all got wiped in the South Campus Gateway project. The North 'berg went under about the same time. The last real campus bar and my personal favorite from college days was Larry's. Alas, Larry's became a bad taco place and then was wiped out. The only thing that feels even remotely close to a college bar is the Blue Danube, home of the blue plate special. It's up on North High Street close to Hudson. Still serves up a decent, cheap steam table meal and a good choice on beer and libations. The new bars are pretty much fern bars or "corporate." OK, but hardly "college bar" material. Nowhere near campus, but the Red Door in Grandview and Bucket of Nails in Gahanna have great burgers and draw a strong OSU crowd. OK, the Red Door is more an Alum bar, but...

You're right in that there really aren't any places left that are true "college" bars or have much history. If you're just looking for a nice place to watch games and drink, then a couple other spots are Eddie George's Grill and Chumley's. But Little Bar is probably the best pre-game tailgate spot for campus bars.

I will say the new Woody's in the Union is actually a decent place to grab a reasonably-priced Ohio beer and some pub grub with a bunch of sports TVs to choose from. You definitely get that OSU ambience in the Ohio Union.

There are a couple of nice places to get food in the library, too, and perhaps more family-oriented. Also very close to the stadium.

Wherever you choose to get your chow, if you haven't been to the library since its renovation, you need to visit. It's phenomenal.

I would also second Woody Hayes Tavern in the Union building, very close to campus. Pizza is also awesome there and they have a good selection of Ohio beers that are broken up by region. I've found that it usually is pretty easy to get in before the game on game day and find a seat.
