tOSU vs. ND, from an Irish Fan

I don't see very many people making note that we failed to score against a 10 man defense the play before that.

There is just no coming back from the jet sweep call on 4th and the ballgame (at the time). You can say whatever you want afterward about being tough but that was action, not words and it showed beyond a shadow of a doubt that he knows he can't run straight ahead and get a yard when he needs to.
The issue is we shouldn’t have to do that.

Teams know what we’re trying to do and again I don’t think any of you know what it’s like to run into a 10 man box when the defense knows you’re coming.

It has nothing to do with toughness but everything to do with tendency and formation.

If you’re going to throw 3 TEs out there and a heavy RB then they’re just going to put extra beef out there too.

I don’t want to see toughness I want to see someone be freaking smart and stop repeating the same dumb bull shit. Maybe a hard count? Maybe a QB sneak like the eagles do (which Penn State now does btw), or what I want to see which is to spread the field and force a team to play us small (along with removing players from the box).

I'm with you on the last part. At this point go 5 wide in every short yardage situation and make some nickel back make a play on a short slant or something similar.

Quit fucking around with trying to run it. We obviously can't (which is a whole other topic).

Or make a nickle back try to stop the run at the line. When it's at the 50 run Fleming or Marv up the seem from in tight blocking like Tressel did in the Game

Lots of ironic takes. Some of you say he shouldn’t be so predictable with big calls - then blast him for going with the unpredictable (jet sweep) play call. You’re only blasting him because it didn’t work, just like every other series.
We didn't like it because it was stupid. It would be unpredictable to take a knee there too.....that's not what we're calling for either.

You can be a Buckeye fan and criticize Day. But your last sentence asks if you’re a Day fan or Buckeye fan? It can be both. I’m old enough to know only Siths deal in absolutes.
I didn’t care for Urban at Florida at all but when he was named Coach at tOSU I didn’t stop being a fan of the Buckeyes. People love to point out Urbans and Tressel failures to build up Day. Day has to stand on his own record.

Wasn’t referring to any particular play. Just the notion that OSU shouldn’t have to get first downs / TD’s / wins a certain way. It’s football - the rules are clear. Go win the outcome however you have to do it.

That's what we are all saying. You suck at running so quit trying to. Just throw the damn thing. At least you will get beat playing to your strength if you get beat.

The deeper issue is why can't Day coached teams get the tough yard when they need to? That gets to the heart of the "soft" narrative and triggered responses.

At some point, in the game of football, if you want to be an elite team, you have to be able to line up and get that tough yard even when they know you are going to do it. That ability has eroded over the past 5 years to the point of being non existent.

What are you calling for? What’s the play you know will work? QB sneak? FB dive? It got rectified on the final drive, but the 3 prior tries were failures before that 4th and short failed.
Funny enough, I don't get paid $10 million to answer that......but I still know the formation vs what ND lined up with, and then the motion towards the direction of where we wanted to run the ball (hint.....it was to the short side, surprise surprise).....I wasn't surprised it didn't work.

Actually, if you go back and watch, one of those fake to the FB (or to Egbuka on the end around in this case) flips to the other RB going the opposite direction would have absolutely gotten a first down, with a high likelihood that Chip actually scores on that play.

When you don't telegraph the play you're going to run with formation, personnel, and tendencies.....they sometimes work.
