tOSU vs. ND, from an Irish Fan

NDIrish0824

Rookie
hey all, ND Fan here, just thought i'd like to chat a little bit about the game this weekend, try and give some input on ND, parking, restaurants, whatever. Not looking to talk crap or anything. Honestly, don't know much about tOSU this year other than what the highlights tell me. I use to follow CFB real close, not so much the last 3 years and just getting back into this year. Always enjoyed having conversations on other teams forums for big games, i.e. George, Clemson, etc. My general rule is though i keep it all to this one thread, seams to be better that way. Im going to try Eleven Warriors as well.

But anyway, if your interested, let me know, doesn't work out, ill leave.

Some quick initial thoughts, ill save some to see if this takes off, not really sure what to make of this game. In my heart i want to believe ND can win this, but my gut says tOSU by 1 score, 24-30 ish. There are times ND's defense looks great, other times look average. Hartman has changes this offense, but the O-line looks weaker than advertised, which i think is where the game will be lost.

Going through a few of your threads, seems like you are all pretty confident that you will leave with a victory, at all concerned about this game?

Good Luck, safe travels.

My worry is the Oline and giving McCord time and a clean pocket to develop deep routes. And Buckeyes like to stretch field in run game so if ND cant contain and keep run game in middle of the field they will struggle. Played pretty clean last week though ND will be biggest competition seen so far and vice versa. Night game on the road. Anything can happen. Like your assessment in 1 score game. ND will really need to slow the game down and draw out drives to limit Buckeye possessions.

I was just going to post something similiar to what @Onebuckfan said, ND has not shown an urge to move fast. They had a couple 2 min drills where they went down quickly, and 1 deep ball against CM, but even against the 4 lesser opponents they played, they just ran the same very steady offense. So i dont think its going to be run run run to try and bleed the clock, but high % passes, being very happy with 3-5 yards a play, 1st downs, stepping down the field. We have some solid WRs and TEs, but really no one that i would say match up well enough with your DB's to go deep and be a real threat. But maybe they have been holding back waiting for this game. Id imagine though the game will be keep away from MH Jr. and not allow big momentum swings. With 1 really good RB and 2 solid young guys, they can keep fresh bodies in there. Sam Hartman seems very patient and just taking what you give him.

But back to your original point, I am still wondering if our D Line can get pressure. They seem... OK. On a 5 step drop they are more likely to make the QB throw on the run then actually record a sack.

I dont think they have a glaring weekness like in years past, but not standout in enough positions to really be considered a top 6 team, more like a 10-12 ranked team.

I think it comes down to the ND defense.

Teams have had success vs Day when they can play a lot of soft zone and make his offense work down the field. They often stall in the red zone because they don't run well in the gotta have it-short yardage situations. If ND can do this on defense, they will have success on offense because the OSU defense isn't likely going to hold up all night to a determined opponent who is willing to be patient and eventually impose their will along the LOS.

OTOH, if Day's offense can score and score from distance (staying out of the RZ) then it's really hard to beat him because you'll have to eventually abandon the run because you are behind and then his defense will thrive (like any will) because you are one dimensional.

The OSU OL is a huge question mark and they are protecting a talented, but inexperienced, QB. If the ND pass rush causes problems and the DB's play well you will win. It's the same script Harbaugh has shoved up his ass two years in a row.

This is BY FAR ND's best chance to beat OSU since 1995 imo. If they can't, you guys really need to wonder what Freeman is all about.

so ND has not played a strong offensive team, NC State has a good defense, Navy has a good rushing attack but you cant really take much from that because of the specialty of it. They did not tackle well on Saturday. I have noticed on most of the TDs their defense has given up, ND assisted the opposing teams offense with at least 2-3 penalties. Neither of those can happen to have a chance against tOSU.

I haven't watched one snap of ND football this year so I have no idea of what you guys can or can't do. I don't think anyone really does this early in the year and from playing tomato cans. It should be an interesting game. First big step up in competition for the year for both sides.

When ND does struggle on offense and defense what seems to be the issue?

For Ohio State it’s when we don’t have success on first down. If we fall into 2nd and 10 we are guaranteed to run the ball for some reason which likely leaves us in 3rd and 8.

On defense we’ve had some issues getting off the field on third down. Although we were very good last week vs WKU.

When ND struggles on offense its really just on the O-Line, they can have 3 drives where they give great protection and then a drive or two where they just get no push.

For defense, they seem a little slow in the first quarter, like they haven't really known what each team is going to do on offense and similar to the o-line, they will be lights out for 3,4 drives and then all of sudden look like they don't know what they are doing. They give up too much on first down, but really play solid on 2nd/3rd down. Penalties seem to hurt them as well. There are plausible explanations for a lot of this, Navy is well navy and sometimes you have to see it live to get in a groove, in the end they only allowed 3 points. Against central Michigan, they were down a couple players, including their Captain linebacker, so that can always throw things off a little, but their tackling was just bad, head down, not wrapping up, etc. Kind of tackling that allowed CM to get 4-5 more yards but could allow a team like yours to take it in for a touchdown.
As we mentioned, cant take too much from this given the competition for both teams, but they have had a pretty even schedule, Indiana/NC State could be considered comparable, Western KY/Central Michigan, Navy/Youngstown state, but here are some stat comparisons, nothing jumps out as a clear advantage, other than Ohio State could have an advantage on 1st Down with their offense and ND could have an advantage in the red zone - as mentioned a couple times here. Hard to take to much because sometimes the difference between being ranked 10 and ranked 40 is minimal.

ND Ohio State
Total Offense 16 24
Passing Yards Allowed 3 6
Rushing Defense 41 20
1st Down Defense 75 5
3rd Down Defense 28 35
Red Zone Defense 12 109
Team Passing Efficiency Defense 1 8
Team Passing Efficiency 3 24
Time of Possession 65 95
Turnover Margin 28 29
Total Defense 4 3
Passing Offense 21 17
Rushing Offense 26 68
1st Down Offense 1 45
3rd Down Conversion 10 93
Red Zone Offense 24 47

ND's got a decent DB backfield. Seems like they'll try to shut down Marvin and Emeka, which means Fleming and Stover will/might have big days. Yeah, their DL might push tOSU's OL around, but am betting that they'll hold out long enough for McCord to find the underneath WRs. For me, I'll be watching our RBs, and if there is some success early, then might be some big plays downfield. If ND blitzes most/all of the time, then it could be a long game. tOSU's DL might be a shade better than ND's OL, soooo, once again, we'll need a big push to put pressure on a very decent QB. So far, the push has been from the DTs, not the DE's during the early parts of the game. Finally, we know that our DL is stacked, so hoping that the constant substitutions will wear down ND's OL. tOSU 36- ND 17. Go Bucks!

And it’s not because NDs DBs aren’t good either.

It’s because NDs WRs aren’t going to be able to make enough plays when compared to OSU.
im not sure about tOSUs DBS, but i get that on ND's receivers, they are solid, but not great, Tobias Mayweather should have big play ability, but has been somewhat quiet this year, 1-3 passes a game is all, had a big one last week, but that is literally all.
