tOSU vs. ND, from an Irish Fan

hey all, ND Fan here, just thought i'd like to chat a little bit about the game this weekend, try and give some input on ND, parking, restaurants, whatever. Not looking to talk crap or anything. Honestly, don't know much about tOSU this year other than what the highlights tell me. I use to follow CFB real close, not so much the last 3 years and just getting back into this year. Always enjoyed having conversations on other teams forums for big games, i.e. George, Clemson, etc. My general rule is though i keep it all to this one thread, seams to be better that way. Im going to try Eleven Warriors as well.

But anyway, if your interested, let me know, doesn't work out, ill leave.

Some quick initial thoughts, ill save some to see if this takes off, not really sure what to make of this game. In my heart i want to believe ND can win this, but my gut says tOSU by 1 score, 24-30 ish. There are times ND's defense looks great, other times look average. Hartman has changes this offense, but the O-line looks weaker than advertised, which i think is where the game will be lost.

Going through a few of your threads, seems like you are all pretty confident that you will leave with a victory, at all concerned about this game?

Good Luck, safe travels.
Welcome to BP, we always value opposing team fan input and overall you will find it pretty hospitable to legit fans like you that provide the insight that you are providing. Plus there is a lot of interaction between our fanbases and others that come on here, we actually have numerous posters that regularly come here even after our game is over.

I have read through the posts in here and have watched a decent bit of ND's games in anticipation of the upcoming match. I am really impressed by Hartman tbh and think he is a massive improvement over your QBs last year. If he has some time, he can tear you apart. The WRs and TEs for ND from what I can tell are not lethal, but good enough to get the job done if Hartman gets protection. At least that is my take, obviously you have watched way more than I have.

Your running attack is what scares me the most. Estime is a stud and Alt, Correll and your RT all seem pretty dang good. We have struggled at times on stopping the interior run and that is against subpar opponents, so if we don't step it up inside it could be a long night for us. We have a very talented DL, but for some inexplicable reason we have issues stopping interior runs where we need to get off the field. That is really the concern I have is death by a million cuts, which ND is perfectly capable of doing to limit our possessions...ND has the blueprint for that after our first 3 games, our defense looks good on the stat sheet until you factor in time of possession.

To the point above, our back 7 on defense looks good. Our LBs are among the best unit in the country, Eichenberg and Chambers are absolute studs. Our secondary became a problem late last year against good competition, so not quite convinced how the stack up...but Western Kentucky has a really good passing attack and our secondary really did a great job against them. Our best CB is Denzel Burke and after a sophomore slump last year, he looks amazing and is in the hip-pocket of a WR every play. But overall, the secondary has looked really good and also deep.

On offense, we are frankly loaded and the OL has got better every week, albeit that your DL will be a huge step up in competition. Our LT is still a big question mark in my eyes and you guys will probably try to exploit him. Our interior OL is very good and I have confidence in our RT, but the OL as a whole only seemed to come into common language last week, so I don't think any OSU fans are completely sold on the OL until we see it get tested. Our RB position group is deep and talented if the OL can get them a crease...specifically, Henderson is looking electric and coming back into form, he is a guy that if he gets past the first level he is gone or at least gets a huge gain with his speed.

McCord at QB looks to be settling in and I think we just went vanilla the first 2 games on offense (and partially in the last game) to not give ND too much film. Our skilled positions are stacked beyond imagination, but this is the first big game under the lights on the road for McCord and the OL needs to prove itself against good competition. I have watched plenty enough football to know that can lead to a less than ideal performance. Your secondary looks pretty good, so it will be a test for sure but even if ND focuses on Harrison and Egbuka, there is still Fleming, Stover, Ballard, Tate, etc. that would be a premier WR/TE for most programs...so I would imagine the game plan would be to pressure McCord at all costs to not let him have time to get the ball out.

To your original question of are we confident in getting a win, I think collectively we are cautiously optimistic (or at least I am). On paper we are very talented and if we play to our talent level, then I would say we win by 10-20 points. If we don't play to our potential, then I see a loss. As @Jaxbuck said, this is the biggest opportunity to beat us given all the considerations above. Both sides may have been holding back a bit in showing too much before this game, so I think both sides are unsure of what is going to happen Saturday night.

That said, can't wait for this game and Go Bucks!

I don’t think we will know much about either team until this game is over. I could see the Bucks rolling ND. I can see how the Irish can roll the Bucks. I can also see a tight game won in final seconds or on a fluke play/call.

I will say that last week as the first time this Buckeye team seemed fired up to play. Very different from how I thought they looked in weeks one and two. One thing is sure, if ND can’t cover Harrison, it’ll be a long night in Studebakerville.

How could it be this season? We’ve played 3 cupcakes.
So then why would you say that? Different year and by this time last year we’d given up multiple big plays per game. Basically nothing so far.

Also laughable that I’ve seen people say YSU imposed their run game. That certainly wasn’t the case whatsoever. Did we give up some first downs yeah but we didn’t get overpowered or something.

How can you say anything is fixed after three games against nobody?

There is a pattern of weak run defense, it's the same guys and if you want to laugh about it or not YSU and WKU both converted short yardage runs in non garbage time when they wanted to and we cared about stopping it.

I'll believe that Day/Knowles run game prevention issues are over when they show they can stand up at the point of attack against a capable run team.

im actually getting pretty excited for this as the week goes on. The first couple days this week i think i had just given in to the fact that ND rarely shows up, let alone win, a big game like this. Maybe its just the fan in me blinding whats in front of me, but im starting to think this could be a really really good game.

Also, for what its worth, if its ACC refs, they have been absolutely garbage this year. It is not an ND favoritism, they are just horrible, and im not one to waste much time talking about the refs, but its been so hard to watch at the two home games.

No one is saying anything is fixed. No one knows that but the same goes for assuming we’re still the boom or bust defense from last year either.

As for other teams getting first downs? That happens, and that especially happens when you’re also playing more safely with less all out aggression.

Can’t complain about giving up big plays from last year and then also complain that we aren’t coming downhill this year to prevent a few first downs.

I can absolutely expect the Ohio State front four to control the LOS against low level opponents. It's got nothing to do with Dr Blitz needing to send the house to stop the other team from getting a yard.

The defense overall has looked good and I agree we don't know that anything is fixed. Cautious optimism on that side of the ball after last week...it was kind of a shock that we struggled so much against IU and YSU, yet played so well against a much better WKU offense. Maybe we needed a challenge to wake up?

This game is the first real challenge for both sides of the ball, but last game is what gave rise to my cautious optimism. WKU was going to get some first downs and score some amount of points, but overall we shut them down when it mattered. I think most discount how good WKU's offense is. But like everyone has said, we really don't know where we are at until the final seconds of this game tick off the clock.

I mean we gave up 160 yards and 3 points to Indiana and 200is yards and 7 to YSU so that’s not only not struggling that’s playing well.

*Struggled to get off the field is what I mean. Stat sheet looks better than what happened in the game imo. I agree overall results are good and I'm encouraged, but time of possession was far from ideal against lesser competition, particularly the first two games.
