Game Thread tOSU @ Virginia Tech, Sep 7 2015 @ 8pm ET, ESPN

The game VT pulled out last year is a great tape to study for this year. They played the best they could which gives coaches exactly what they need to see to prepare for and to plan on how to defend or attack. I'm not worried this year. I expect it to be close in the first QTR then start pulling away 2nd qtr and 2nd half. Depth takes over.

Ohio State will win this game by 21 points or more. I fully expect them to struggle for a half, but in the third quarter we'll wear them down and show the nation that Ohio State is everything that we expected them to be. I agree with Saw and laughed when I read his 95 Nebraska analogy earlier. I used the same example when talking about this years squad to my buddy. I think that this team could be one of the best that the Big Ten has ever seen, but the other team I used in my example was 2002-2003 Miami. Obviously, there is a chance that we get overconfident and get upset. I'm fully aware that we have a much better QB over that Miami squad. Hopefully these kids stay hungry, because the moon is the limit this year. This game with Va. Tech will simply be a smashed piece of gum at the bottom of our shoe that sticks at first, but grows dirtier and obsolete by seasons end. I'm not being cocky, I just see what Urban does with revenge games......especially with a veteran team, returning from a national championship, with revenge in the cross hairs. Do the math.

No argument here. VT's offense has a way of making any defense look like the '85 Bears at times. I just hope that Foster can keep them focused and not play down to their opponents (ie- Tech's offense in practice).

Overall, I still expect Ohio State to win this game but I'm hoping that VT can surprise me. I think that our defense will be rock solid for awhile, but if our offense can't move the ball and put up points then they're going to get worn down. Ohio State has way too much talent and it will take another perfect game to have a chance. Realistically, this game could quickly turn into a blowout but if we put up another effort like last year I think that it could be a competitive game for awhile. All I know is that football season is back, and I'm PUMPED for September 7th. See you guys in Blacksburg!
I don't really see what's so funny about it being a mismatch (Kendall vs Thomas)... If Thomas can go for 80+ yards on tech with a green OL/QB then he can do more this year and what I mean is Thomas is 6'3" with great length which Kendall does not possess at 5'11".

They will likely prepare for Michael Thomas more this year after losing Devin Smith and also Jalin and Dontre.

Michael Thomas is a hell of a player, and the height difference will give him an advantage when going up for balls, but Fuller's skill set is phenomenal. What he may lack in height he compensates with an extremely high football IQ and athleticism. He's a student of the game and puts himself in the right position to make plays. Of course, Thomas is also very talented and very well may get a few big plays on him, but he's going to have to really earn it.

In his FIRST game as a true freshman Fuller was covering Amari Cooper when we played Bama, and Cooper finished 4 for 38 yards (0 TDs). And yes, I realize VT lost that game. That's what happens when you allow 21 points from 2 kick return TDs and a pick six. Damn that game still pisses me off...

It's an interesting theory, and it could even be true. But I don't think last year or this year's games are a very good test of it.
He just kind of glosses over JT's inexperience as an excuse -- but the fact is that he had a very limited playbook. Herman referenced that in the post-game interviews. And you could see it on the field... I swear they went for the long ball on the left like 4 times in a row.
Not only was the playbook not there, but he wasn't checking out of plays yet either. I want to say that started against Cinci.

This year, there's such a talent discrepancy... it's probably not going to be a fair accounting of the 4-6 vs. power spread either.

What's notable is that VTech had mixed results against the 2 teams they tried this against last year -- BC and Duke. Giving up 33 to BC in a loss, but holding Duke to 16. What's also notable is that every team had VTech's tape last year... yet none of them could duplicate that success. Even teams with more talent than VTech, and about the same talent as Ohio State.
That strongly suggests that the shortened playbook wasn't a small factor that can be dismissed as an excuse.

Urban's strategy calls for "making them pay" if the numbers dictate it, which they clearly did. Unfortunately, they were unable to capitalize.

The other part of Urban's strategy calls for slants and quick hitters, which was implemented a week late, it seemed, but JT and the team can now handle.

They threw the ball to Corey at least 12 times (and that's not an exaggeration). He probably received that many targets in the next 14 games combined. Spencer also received more deep balls than he should have received, as he also struggles on those contested 1v1 situations.

Meanwhile the true deep ball specialist was in the dog house, playing sporadically and not playing with the same fire and effort that would galvanize his season later on.

 No [Mark May]. The stadium PA should just cue up "Yakety Sax" everything time Braxton gets the ball in that case...

Shit, put it on the scoreboard....
