Game Thread tOSU @ Virginia Tech, Sep 7 2015 @ 8pm ET, ESPN

You know, it's ok to admit once in awhile that your team got outplayed and lost a game. No sane person would ever say that VT is a better team than tOSU, but on that night they deserved it. When we lost to JMU it was a f***ing nightmare but I can still congratulate them for doing more to win the game instead of going on and on with excuses such as our 4 days rest after a Monday night game, lack of focus, going against the triple option in pouring rain, etc. But I'm not that petty.

If you want to talk about experience, 3 of our touchdowns were scored by freshmen and the 4th by a sophomore walk-on fullback. In total, our offense featured 2 freshmen running backs (Williams, McKenzie), 3 freshmen receivers (Hodges, Ford, Newsome), and a brand new quarterback who had just transferred after riding the bench at Texas Tech. All going against an elite college powerhouse on the road in a hyped-up night game. That performance probably only happens 1 out of 100 times, but it happened.
I have no problem admitting that VT outplayed OSU. Some of that was great execution (which was a blowout), some of it was toughness, some of it was a ridiculous amount of clutch play by your QB and receivers, often escaping like houdini, throwing a split second before getting crushed and having the pass either arrive perfectly in stride or have an acrobatic leaping or diving catch (sometimes by a walk-on fullback). It was especially demoralizing to see those clutch plays involve ALL of those things on many occasions

Even with all of that, the game was still pretty close. If the Hokies were coming back to Columbus and Bosa were playing, I don't think this would be very competitive. On the road without their best DL (and replacing 2 others with a THIN depth chart at DT), this went from a topical matchup to an intriguing one.

I had not rewatched that game since the postseason. I just went through the first half for the sake of a QB competition argument. It was shocking to be reminded of just how discombobulated JT was that night. He has been tight or a little hesitant to pass before, but the guy couldn't handle snaps. He broke open for runs and then wasn't sure how to finish half of them, like that early scamper in the redzone where he ran into his blocker. They also targeted Corey Smith about 12-14 times. I'm not sure he received that many targets during the entire course of the season after that.

Great, great play and execution by VT and woeful, lost play by OSU. I imagine both teams will be much improved this fall.

Trust me man, for a program that's been riddled with missed opportunities and blown games, you can only imagine our collective shock at how that game turned out. I think Brewer pulled a dozen rabbits out of his helmet throughout the game. Of course, we all came quickly back to reality for the rest of the season when the magic wore off... :smash:

tOSU fans overall have been great and that's the reason why I'm on this site having fun with you guys. I expect VT to be improved from their overall level last season (outside of the tOSU game), but they are severely overmatched in many ways even when you factor in the suspensions. After stealing the game on the road last year we're playing with house money and I just want them to fight like hell and try to keep it close. And who knows, maybe there will be a little magic left after all

Urban's strategy calls for "making them pay" if the numbers dictate it, which they clearly did. Unfortunately, they were unable to capitalize.

The other part of Urban's strategy calls for slants and quick hitters, which was implemented a week late, it seemed, but JT and the team can now handle.

I haven't watched the game in awhile, but I seem to recall there was double coverage over there more than not -- they tried it so often the safety knew where it was going. And finally it got picked.
I think that was a lack of plays that Urban and Herman felt confident about running more than any philosophy... and felt like that was the case most of the night. They kept going back to the same wells expecting different results.

Who do they put on him? A CB can cover him but God help him once Brax has the ball, and it's going to take a very athletic safety to prevent Brax from pantsing him repeatedly. A linebacker is just going to bring the lulz.

In their base defense, it'll be a star/nickel type player. Wouldn't surprise me if they move their #2 corner inside and let the nickel have a little help using the sideline against our #2 WR (Dixon?). It could be a breaking out party for whoever the #2 WR is... big opportunity. Cuz I assume we'll have to throw to open up the run.

Just one guys opinion but for me the biggest themes from last years game were
  1. OSU's inability to make VT pay for the 46 defense via the pass
  2. VT's QB had the absolute game of his life. Not trying to take anything away from him, he did it and it counted but looking at his body of work it was an outlier.
  3. VT won the field position game by a lot
Prognosticating the 2015 game really comes down to how confident you are on the odds of those things being repeated imo.

In other words, you played way over your heads. Exactly what I'm saying. If VT was as half as good as many on Key Play say they were, then VT would not have gone 7-6 overall and 3-5 in the weakest of the Power Five conferences. To show how mediocre your season was, VT had to resort to troll [Mark May] like this to gloat:

Most here congratulated VT for their win, but still understood why it happened.

Offensive line and the running game have got to be ready to roll for this game. We are going to be down 4 of our top 5 WR's and facing a team that can shut down our passing game with their pressure/secondary which means 8 in the box all game. We need Michael Thomas, Braxton, Zeke, Samuel and Vannett to be huge for this opening game. Honestly, if we get through the first game with a win that's all that matters because the facts are we will be short 5 players (all of which will play big roles this year).

We still have some talent out wide but all of it is pretty much unproven with Campbell, McLaurin, Clark, and Gibson. They only need to be solid for us thats all because if they just don't kill us with drops etc we will be fine.
