Game Thread tOSU @ Virginia Tech, Sep 7 2015 @ 8pm ET, ESPN

Dante Booker was in for a while
Yeah the second team front seven got a couple drives...good to see Booker as I don't think he got any time outside special units last year.

Johnson also rotated the DL fairly often, especially inside. Inconsistency ruled, but the midget RB of Tech's didn't make things easy. Lots of depth, would be surprised to see any of the five freshmen DL in '15.

X2. New sports center does suck.

Thought our pass rush and run d looked ok. With bosa back it will probably tighten up. Did not like our secondary performance. I will have to see just how much was putting them in cover 0 with all that blitzing but there were some plays for sure they blew assignment or got beat out of position.

Too much option with Cardale. I don't mind running it when it is working but they really should feed elliot instead when it isn't.

I hope to see them stretch the field more when Corey and jalin return. Cardales arm strength should have them looking to exploit the deep ball more often than they were.

In the end it all worked out but I do see some of that same stubbornness from last year where they are determined to prove that a particular play or scheme is good by repeating it even when it isn't working. It just so happens that eventually it sometimes does work out but at what cost for all the other snaps it didn't. Luckily we haven't had to find out in quite a while because we ultimately prevail. That is really all that matters in the end but I can't help think how much more dominant we would perform if we adjusted a bit more to focus on the plays that are bearing fruit at particular points in the game.

Well I didn't see this in the cards but after Brewer went down you could tell it was all OVER. Here are a couple things that I took away from the game

1. 17 points of the 24 are off turnovers and going into last year this was a huge problem as well. I don't know who can explain what we need to do to get better at this but when you have a quick change of possession you have got to bow up and get a stop. We gave up a high percentage of points when teams got into the red zone last year off turnovers and it after one game still seems to be a MAJOR issue. IMO, you just have to find a way to win on first down when as a defense you are thrown back onto the field due to a turnover. IMO the biggest disappointment about this game was again our defenses inability to force 3 and while our starters were for the most part 50/50 by the time they scored their garbage TD we really need to get this addresses PRONTO.

2. Zeke should not be returning kicks and I don't foresee him there anymore now that Jalin will be back next week.

3. I have no idea what game people were watching here but I thought the Slobs owned them upfront for much of the game. Jones got pressured but that was to be expected against a team like Tech and the quickness they have up front. Counters, sweeps, options, power, and QB leads were there all game and with 8-9 in the Box no less as Tech once again rolled the dice with the bear defense.

4. I am personally not sure what to make of Cardale's stat line of being a 50% passer. He's just so strong, has such a pocket presence, and has such a arm that you cannot replicate that. I actually loved the way our offense looked with JT in the game with how beautifully he runs the option game and then to see his one pass be a TD I mean there's lots to like with JT's game as well. It won't matter either way but its such luxury to have JT as our freaking back up. Cardale however cannot be a sub 50% passer though and while he doesn't need to be 70% he surely needs to be around the 60 mark.

5. Braxton.... my god how awesome is he? He has really really good hands and he went low for a diving catch and then snatched the ball with his hands on a out route for his TD.

6. Our defense really really missed Bosa tonight as I thought for the most part out front failed to provide much of a rush (particularly when Brewer was in). I fully expect a pass rushing front of Lewis-Bosa-Washington- Hubbard in the future.

7. This team is just disgusting. We won by 18 (frankly we should've won 50-3 by my count) and we now get the best defensive player in the nation and get our 2-4 receivers back. However, we cannot forget who we are which is a run first team that sets up the pass.

Overall, this game felt much worse than the score looks (which I fucking cannot stand) and while we did a lot right we also have a TON to work on. We need to work on our ball security, we need to work at our quick change game on defense, and we need to do a better job again with getting off the field.

Am I the only person that doesn't think Cardale is going to be the guy? It makes perfect sense for him to have been the "starter" today for a few reasons. The offensive weapons out on suspension today meant that most of the passing game was going to be deep balls and wheel routes. This, coupled with the fact that we know our O Line was going to be out manned by VA Tech's D Line, both in experience and scheme, means you want a guy under center that can withstand a pass rush and gain yards on busted pockets, because he wouldn't have slant routes and check downs to throw to.

Urban has consistently said that both QBs will play, even after this game. We all saw the offensive scheme look like a JT style offense and we all saw how easy the two plays he was a part of looked. Now imagine you have an offense on full tilt with all of your offensive weapons and the ability to force a defense to defend 4 all star receivers AND Zeke. You put the ball in the hands of your distributor. That's JT.

Cardale has packages designed specifically for him, which we saw in short yardage and on short field. That's where we'll see him from now on.

At least that's my take on everything. I honestly don't expect Cardale to be starting next week and it's not an adjustment, it's by design and has been planned for a while.

I'm not an expert at breaking down plays, but I imagine a lot of those plays that "fail" are put on tape and are called to set up the ones that work. It's like a good boxer. Get the defense expecting the jab and throw the knock out punch.

Ok I made it 1 post to start it all back up again... I sort of hope so and it's not a knock on Cardale to be honest. Look with our running threats with Marshall, Zeke, Samuel, and Braxton we are STACKED to run option football. The QB's job is to make the right reads, be a threat himself in the run game, and then to go play action and distribute. I don't know if Cardale is our permanent starter and while I don't think it'll ultimately matter I do feel our offense can be more fully utilized with JT.
