It was different during the BCS era? Nope. If anything, the playoff is more forgiving. Under BCS rules the Buckeyes don't even sniff a title last season. It's Oregon vs Bama and the masses swallow it whole.

He didn't say they were ducking anybody. He said the schedule was diluted, which it is because league expansion increases the odds that top teams in separate divisions won't play each other.

That's why they play a CCG though, and if you get there and take care of business, the SOS stuff takes care of itself, as we saw at the end of last season.
