COSHOCTON - The Army Navy William E. Unger Garrison Post is usually packed every Saturday for the Ohio State game.
But whether or not the post will air the Ohio State versus Indiana game is still up in the air.
Post Manager Jan Everhart, as well as fans across the Buckeye state, are expressing their frustrations as they learn the Ohio State game against the Indiana Hoosiers will only be broadcast on ESPNU.
That's right, even if you have Time Warner Cable's ESPN Game Plan, you still won't get the game on Oct. 21.Everhart was surprised to learn the game won't be viewable on basic cable through Time Warner.
"We're big fans here. I don't know, it's like, blowing my mind," Everhart said.
She said guests crowd in the post every Saturday for the game.
"I didn't even know about it," she said.
It's a decision that Time Warner Cable's Judy Barbao, manager of public relations, said is completely in the hands of the Big Ten and is not going over well with fans or bar owners.
"Obviously this is a big deal for Buckeye fans. It matters a lot to them, but unfortunately, it's out of our hands in terms of where the games are being aired. We want to air it and we want to view it as much as everyone," Barbao said from the Time Warner main office in Columbus.
ESPNU is a 24-hour college sports network that is only available through some satellite networks like DIRECTV and dish network, which is still only available if you have a certain package.
Roseville resident Tony McConnell was disappointed, to say the least, after hearing the news. He's an avid Buckeye fan who never misses a game and yet, next week, has nowhere to watch the game.
"I haven't figured out what I'm going to do yet, still working on it," McConnell said. Hoping to go to a friend's house who has DIRECTV, McConnell said he's never heard of an Ohio State game not being aired like this before.
"I think most people are like me and just have cable, and I think they're going to try to find some place to watch the game like I'm going to have to. We're ranked number one, it ought to be on ABC, ESPN and ESPN2," he said.
Maple Avenue Buffalo Wild Wings Supervisor Amanda Jirles said they normally air the OSU games each Saturday through their ESPN Game Day package, but it does not include ESPNU. She said they're hoping to get the game through their DIRECTV satellite subscription, but said she won't know for sure until Tuesday or Wednesday, when the DIRECTV schedule for the weekend is released.
The Barn's manager, Dustin Steed, said he received an e-mail last week from their provider, Time Warner Cable, notifying the establishment that the game will only be available through ESPNU. He said the Ohio State games are aired at the Linden Avenue establishment if they're on a local channel, but even the Columbus ABC affiliate channel 6 won't be airing the game.
"Cable's really hurting themselves not being able to get things like this, I really thought they provided better service," Steed said. He said the idea of getting the game next Saturday through DIRECTV has been discussed, but is just too costly.
This leaves fans cramming into friends living rooms and local bars/restaurants who do get ESPNU.
"We absolutely will have the Ohio State, Indiana game. It's going to be crazy. We pack 'em in here and I think that one is going to be a really packed game because people can't see it at home," said Pam Allison, owner of the Newark Damon's.
She said they try to offer as many games as they can through cable and satellite, which they ordered especially for the upcoming game.
"A lot of people, our regulars especially, are asking 'are we still coming here (for the OSU, Indiana game)?' And we're saying 'yes, we're airing it and we'll see you on Saturday just like normal,'" she said.
All season long, the OSU games have been filling up the entire restaurant, as well as the banquet room that seats 60 and is equipped with a big screen TV.
Time Warner Cable, the major cable provider in the Coshocton area, is the second largest cable company in the U.S. with 11 million basic subscribers, 5.6 million digital subscribers and services more than 600,000 people in nearly 60 counties in Ohio.
According to Barbao, Time Warner corporate is "in discussions" with ESPN's owner, Disney, to add that channel to their line-up and has been even before football season started.
She said discussions are going well, but it can't be said if an agreement will be reached by Oct. 21.
"We would like that to happen locally, obviously, because we are big, huge Buckeye fans too, but it's not a time table that's a certainty. Right now it looks like ESPNU is the one and only place," she said.
