tOSU TV Viewing/ESPN GamePlan?

i don't recall it stating anywhere in the provider/customer contract that i as a customer must be understanding and forgiving when i don't get exactly what it is i want. in fact, im fairly certain it states the exact opposite...

You're correct, you don't HAVE to understand anymore than they have to explain making a sound business decision. You can either CHOOSE to accept it when a business makes a sound decision (which this is), or you can CHOOSE to complain, but either way, since this is a completely sound, ethical, and acceptable decision for ESPN to make, there's nothing to be done to change it. So, by all means, shout your disappointment, but complaining that there's something WRONG with ESPN's decision is, once again, misguided. Nothing was ever promised here, and those that feel otherwise simply because they have seen every game for 5 or 6 years are similar to those who think they must live forever because they haven't died yet.

I just sent the Dayton reporter the following:

Dear Mark:

I?m guessing that you probably weren't raised in central Ohio and consequently don't understand our culture very well. So, from the tip of Africa, let me help you out.

We want to see every Ohio State game. Whether they win or lose. Whether they are favorites or not. No matter how Ohio State might be ranked. College football is part of our culture and if someone pays for the rights to broadcast a game from the state's premier university, a university built with and supported by our tax dollars, then we want to see it.

ESPN might be very impressed with your article, but Buckeye fans and advertisers will not be. The fact is that ESPN are broadcasting the game. There is a huge demand for it. They could easily make it available on ESPN GamePlan at a profit, even if only for online distribution. Instead, ESPN is using this game as a hammer to club your readers and many of your advertisers into buying the rights to ESPNU, which no one wants. Mind you, these are folks that already have paid for access to other ESPN channels. They paid to build and maintain Ohio State. They built your newspaper. They pay your salary.

Mark, ESPN won't place much value on your support for their greed. Your readers and advertisers will.

Kind regards
steve

Not relevant because I understand why ESPN put this game on da U, but check out all the great games on gameplan this week. :shake: I'm pretty sure this is my last season ordering Gameplan as a season package...of course I said that last year too.

so your idea of a sound business decision stems from the belief that those of us who do not have a provider that has espnu will rush out and switch to one that does? or that we will pressure our current provider enough that they will cave and give into whatever demand espin has placed on their godlike channel that they have yet to accept?

oh and just for the record, from the responses i have received from time warner.. the second option ain't that likely...

besides, the gameplan commercial says "catch your favorite teams each week"...I got gameplan to be able to watch FSU up here in Ohio, and what have I gotten....2 FSU games on ESPNU, a station unavailable to me...I feel like I got bait and switched...Gameplan has sucked this year and I won't buy it again, ESPN has chosen to show crappy games every week instead of putting marquee teams in the slot....Yes I'd rather watch a traditioanl powerhouse play Rice/Duke instead of Minnesota vs. South Dakota St......I payed over $100 for a service that sucks.....it doesn't surprise me all that much b/c all ESPN has done over the last 2-3 years is suck....this is another conversation but does anoyone else agree ESPN is trying to become MTV?

for those of you in cincy with time warner cable... not sure if it just hasn't been updated yet or not but my preview channel doesn't show the buckeye game as being aired at 11pm saturday or 8pm sunday on ONN. anyone else check yet?

I thought ONN was driven state-wide. I didn't think that Cincinnati could have one program on ONN, and another city have another. But maybe that's true. How often does your preview channel update its schedule? Is it at all possible that they are behind, since it wasn't decided, until like Tuesday, that the game would be replayed?

ONN To Show Buckeyes vs. Indiana Game
Oct 18 2006 9:46AM

BREAKING NEWS:

ONN WILL AIR OSU vs. INDIANA GAME SATURDAY AT 11:00PM

* Click here to find ONN on your cable system

The Dispatch Broadcast Group and ONN have been in intense discussions with The Ohio State University to try and find some level of solution to show the OSU vs. Indiana football game. We are proud to announce that the game will be seen on ONN, tape delayed, at 11:00pm on Saturday night. ONN will show an encore presentation of the game, Sunday night at 8:00pm.

The original game will air on ESPNU Saturday at Noon. This marks the first time in nine years that a Buckeyes football game will not be seen live on local television.

"In a perfect world, WBNS-10TV would have proceeded as usual with our broadcast of the game, but unfortunately this one was out of our control," said 10TV/ONN President and General Manager Tom Griesdorn. "However, because of our strong commitment to the Buckeyes, their fans and our most valued customer the viewer, we wanted to seek every opportunity to show this game. We are fortunate to have ONN as a second source for bringing Buckeye football to fans not only in Central Ohio, but the entire state. "

"There is no other regional cable channel that is this committed to Ohio State," said Jason Pheister, ONN Director of Programming. "We have Buckeye coverage nearly every day of the week and our Ohio State special programs continue to get great response. This is a great mix of what people care about."

Each week, ONN airs "Spielman on Sports" Mondays at 10pm, "Scarlet N' Gray Replay" Mondays at 11pm, "Buckeye Blitz" Tuesdays at 8pm, "The Jim Tressel Call-In Show" on Thursdays at 8pm, "Pre-Game Live" Saturdays at 12:30pm, and "Post Game Live" immediately following every game. The specials replay several times during the week as well.

For programming information on ESPN-U, please contact your cable or satellite provider.

While we make every effort to service our most valued customer, the viewer, carrying the game live is a matter that is completely out of our hands.

For any questions regarding this matter, please contact the Big 10.

I checked the ESPN Gameplan schedule on Cox Cable in Vegas where I live this morning. We have six channels dedicated to Gameplan each week. Sometimes they are all filled, sometimes not. Saturday morning Channel 606 is blank at 9 a.m. PDT. So, the argument made by some here and elsewhere that there is no inherent right to see tOSU is hooey.
There is an inherent right because there is precedent. That precedent includes Gameplan carrying all ESPN non-national platform games indefinitely into the past. That we are the #1 team in the country is what determines whether we are seen. Versus teams like Indiana State versus Ball State, for example. Gameplan and by association Cox Cable have accepted money for Gameplan on false pretenses.
Not that pointing that out will do a rip dip of good.
Go Bucks!

possible, but as of 1:11am saturday ONN states that "primetime ohio" is scheduled to air from 11pm to midnight... sunday at 8pm to 9pm "ohio tonight" is scheduled. *shrug* might not be updated... but id feel a heck of a lot better if they would update the flippin thing! :p

Well you're both misguided. Gameplan isn't designed for Buckeye fans and Buckeye Fans alone. It's ESPN GAMEPLAN, not BuckeyePlan.

And Milli, I've had the GamePlan subscription since the first year it was offered (much longer than you apparently), and I can tell you that it wasn't always that way and there never was/is such a guarantee, so I'm not sure how/why anyone can legitimately complain about it. Nowhere does it say that all Bucks games will be covered. Does it say that all Minny games will be covered? How about PSU games? Hmmm, guess it doesn't guarantee those either. That's because it's not supposed to. While I too wish it was on Gameplan, I'm not upset because it's not. That's just a farse and implying that you are entitled to something that you are not. But, if you can show me where in the fine print it says that GamePlan will offer ALL Buckeye games, then I'll concede.

[let me preface these comments by saying I have DirecTV and will be drinking beer in approximately 7 hours and watching the game on my big screen.]

You got one thing right...it is ESPN gameplan. Is ESPNU and ESPN Gameplan two seperate entities...No, they are the same company. ESPN has the ability to show the game on gameplan like they did for the last 5 years. they aren't showing it to force time warner to carry the channel. ESPNU has had crap games all year, now they are showing the number one team in the country and only 10% of Ohio can see the game. They want people to pay a premium to watch programming such as George Mason's midnight madness which was on for 1.5 hours last night. Perhaps you would enjoy paying a premium to watch lacross for 6 consecutive hours. Time warner doesn't want people to pay for the chanel because it is a shitty channel. ESPN is trying to force their hand by placing a game with arguably the largest fan base in college football on a pissant (excellent choice of words Milli) chanel. I have had gameplan in the past and I venture to say that the number team in the country has always had their game shown on gameplan.

ESPN can lick my taint.

oh and just for the record, from the responses i have received from time warner.. the second option ain't that likely...

It gives people who already have the capability (sat subscribers and some cable operators) but who haven't purchased it to do so. Then, as momentum builds, it will be added to more providers. This is a simple business model, if you are arguing against it, you are arguing against how things have been done for a while now. So, while it doesn't happen overnight, it WILL happen. But I suppose you'd rather that they show old Brady Bunch episodes in hopes of gaining viewership... Yes, this is a sound decision and is just as they did with ESPN2, which I don't see anybody complaining about them carrying games now. You don't like it? Cancel all of your ESPN service or don't watch it....cut off that nose to spite your face all you want. Oh, and cancel that GamePlan next year too...and if you live out of region, you can enjoy not watching Bucks play much at all next year. This is the way the business model works, and there was no contract offering you the ability to watch every game, so they've not wronged anyone here.
