Then don't make a straw man argument.
I don't think you know what that means.

I said the coaches need to create a game plan that recognizes and compensates for Barrett's struggles in previous games. You mocked the idea of benching him.

Clearly that had nothing to do with my original point.

A straw man is a common type of argument and is an informal fallacybased on the misrepresentation of an opponent's argument.[1] To be successful, a straw man argument requires that the audience be ignorant or uninformed of the original argument.

The so-called typical "attacking a straw man" argument creates the illusion of having completely refuted or defeated an opponent's proposition by covertly replacing it with a different proposition (i.e., "stand up a straw man") and then to refute or defeat that false argument ("knock down a straw man") instead of the original proposition.[2][3]

I know I'm going to get flack for this but I think OSU wins comfortably tomorrow. Last year the MSU defense pretty much only had to focus on Carlos Hyde and containing Braxton's running. They had no fear of his passing. The MSU offense gashed us all day with misdirection away from Shazier and the other LB's were constantly out of place or had overrun the play. With all that... we still could have won the game. Our back 7 is infinitely better as a group. I think we'll have a smarter game plan for Langford putting the game in Cook's hands which will put the game in Bosa's hands. Offensively we have a lot more options than last year which should help JT stay off his back and make just enough plays. OSU seems to also have a distinct advantage in the special teams department. Big games seem to always be tougher on the home team for a while because of the live pressure to perform. Without going into a laborious post: OSU 38 MSU 24.

Why would you get flack? Michigan State isn't better than us. We really have come together as a team this year. And if we play as a team, we have too much talent to lose.

I won't be able to watch the game, as my brother in law is in his last moments after a battle with stage IV melanoma....but I just wanted to pop in and say....

Fuck that state up north. Not only that whore Anne arbor, but East Lansing too. I have no doubt Urban and staff will have the Bucks ready. Sparty....you're going down, bitch.

LET'S GO BUCKS!!!!

Sorry to hear this MD. Hope the last moments are as painless for him and all your family as possible.

Then don't make a straw man argument. Barrett showed heart in the PSU game when it mattered most and gained a lot from his experience in the largest crowd he'll face all year. I think he gained a ton in maturity just from that game.

Exactly...had we lost to PSU..different story as he may think, oh no, here we go again. But with the win I think all of us who follow this program closely know that JT will just go, "I got this." And get it done.

Been there, done that. And I think our defense will play so well tonight, that the offense won't need to put up tons of points. Just keep the ball, control the clock some, and only give the ball away by kicking it. The talent we have will score us enough points on offense if we do these things and special teams and defense will more than do the rest.

Defense has got to win this game for us. Can not let them keep moving the chains. If they can run on us, then we need some turnovers. Strip that ball out of there. If they can drive the field all day, we're in trouble. Defense has to find ways to get off the field. This is my pre-drinking analysis. As the day goes on, well, stop paying attention to what I say...

Now, let's do this shit!

Fuck that state!

Fucking fuckers!

Fuck 1998! Right in the fucking pussy!

Okay, and if the unfortunate happens and Barrett struggles again will the coaches have a backup plan or will we start running nothing but QB draws and read options while totally abandoning the pass game?
Which play would you like them to dial up? Because when things stalled at the beginning of the second half, JT couldn't execute a 5 yd slant (pick six), a screen pass behind the LOS (I don't love the call but the pass was too high), a basic playaction pass down the sideline (with a 20 yd opening for Thomas, or spencer right after him) or a wide open pick play to Heuerman (triple clutched and batted down).

Frankly, I was shocked at how well Herman was able to run the ball on a stout Penn State defense. That was a huge improvement over the Va Tech game (against a very average unit outside of the CB position).

People talk about Herman like he's handcuffing the offense when I view it is the other way around. When Braxton Miller is only efficient (occasionally) at the deep ball, Sparty has a pile of killer DBs who dominate in man coverage deep and OSU has a host of WRs that struggle to bring the ball down when challenged, the offense is going to stall (despite huge success running when Narduzzi sold out to stop that). When JT has a line and WRs that fail him all night, the offense is going to fail vs VT. If the QB, OL or WRs fail that badly again (let alone multiple units), it will take a miracle for Herman to scheme his way to a victory.

I thought the gameplan against Va Tech was mediocre but even mediocre execution would have resulted in a victory. Instead they had lousy execution and they lost ot a bad team.

I though the gameplan against PSU was solid and they had surprisingly effective execution on the ground. If you told us that going into the game, we would have felt great about the outcome. Instead JT was dreadful through the air and then had his nerves rattled even further by a reinjured knee.

I think Herman will give his team opportunities to succeed. Will JT be able to hit Devin deep, or the tight ends down the seam? Will he release it with confidence and in stride on swing and screen passes? Will the young OL be able to create space for EzE and others to operate? Because otherwise the same chorus about Herman will be uttered, even if the playcalling is pretty good.

They ran a play early in the game in which they rolled Barrett out of the pocket and Heuerman was wide open in the flats. Barrett made a bad decision and threw it to the end zone rather than taking the easy yards. I would have liked to see more plays like that while emphasizing taking the easy yards/throw.

I recognize that Barrett wasn't hitting anything in the second half- even the simple stuff, but I think getting him out of the pocket could have helped open up some passing lanes and given him one less thing (the pocket collapsing) to think about.

I'm just looking for something in between deep posts to Devin Smith and seam routes to the tight ends. I think roll outs are a nice middle ground that could be successful. If that fails then I guess it's time to throw up your hands and accept that we have a young QB and OLine paired with inconsistent WRs that make an efficient passing attack extremely difficult.

In regards to the running game, no one benefits more from playing pissed off than the offensive line. Hopefully the revenge/underdog factor will have a big impact up front and a group of pissed off Buckeye linemen will be able to help establish something on the ground. That would certainly help out a lot in other areas.
