Because PSU will suffocate the LOS, making short passes very difficult?
Because JT had struggled mightily and thus they'd be hesitant to use Cardale in that situation?
Because Cardale had barely thrown the ball all year?
Because the risks (sacks, interceptions) greatly outpace the potential gains (doubtful they would risk a deep route, so you're probably looking at a 7-12 yd gain) ?
Because when the play failed, they still had a great chance to pick up a first down on the ground?

Because when Herman went for the home run with Braxton against Sparty - TWICE - it infuriated most of us, because they only needed a single with Hyde and he was batting 1000 on those plays.


edit: Just saw the ending, because Krenzel was losing before Holy Buckeye. The rest of the time Tressel infuriated fans with his unimaginative offense. He channeled his inner 'haters gonna hate' smirk and remained atop college football as the most consistent powerhouse during his time as head coach.

It's shocking Oregon's scoring is so low considering how shitty the rest of their stats are. Must be getting a ton of turnovers and other teams are getting clock time due to quick Duck scores.

typo, that should read 52 not 25 (and I just checked another site that has them at 54). Still I think your general commentary holds

I know I'm going to get flack for this but I think OSU wins comfortably tomorrow. Last year the MSU defense pretty much only had to focus on Carlos Hyde and containing Braxton's running. They had no fear of his passing. The MSU offense gashed us all day with misdirection away from Shazier and the other LB's were constantly out of place or had overrun the play. With all that... we still could have won the game. Our back 7 is infinitely better as a group. I think we'll have a smarter game plan for Langford putting the game in Cook's hands which will put the game in Bosa's hands. Offensively we have a lot more options than last year which should help JT stay off his back and make just enough plays. OSU seems to also have a distinct advantage in the special teams department. Big games seem to always be tougher on the home team for a while because of the live pressure to perform. Without going into a laborious post: OSU 38 MSU 24.

I would not be shocked by ANY Outcome tomorrow to be honest. I think the defense will play their most inspired football yet this season. It only depends if our offense has a pulse tomorrow

I think the problem w/Brax was that he went to that well twice in a row. I get what Showme is saying, go for the deep play-action on 3rd and short if you know you're going for it on 4th anyway. Though it's hardly the only call that could be made, and the one that Herman went with made sense given Cardale just coming in and well... being Cardale.

I'd actually disagree with comments on Tress... maybe it's an accurate description of how a lot of people viewed him. But imo, Tressel offenses were notorious for grinding a lot of games every year giving nothing away week after week, same predictable stuff. And then in the big games he'd suddenly break all those tendencies and rise to the occasion.
I appreciate what Herman is able to do on the average games and he's clearly a gifted OC. But I think he could take a page from Tressel in this regard. I can remember Tress doing PA from a goal line type formation on short yardage to guys like Ginn and Ballard. Or the statue of liberty. Even when it failed miserably, like 4th down against Florida... Tressel didn't leave anything left in the most important moments and went for it all.
I don't think Herman needs to save wrinkles and hold back ... but he does have a tendency to become very predictable, like calling the same play twice in a row, at the most critical moments. I drank most of that VTech into oblivion, but it seemed like we ran the same play-action (w/no run threat) deep to the left side like 10 times in a row. I'm sure that's a gross exaggeration, but... I just remember sitting there thinking "really? again? how many times?" while the game slipped away.
All week I'm seeing posts on threads about how we could use wildcat this or Samuel that or a reverse off a base play... but the first time that kind of trickery comes out of nowhere against a headline opponent will be the first for Herman. I hope it's a first tomorrow.

I have not read throughout and this has almost certainly been mentioned as to why;but thinking with my noodle only....it sniffs like an MSU win.Of course.....I would hate that outcome.


Hoping with gusto it's an Ohio State win but not really,really confident....obviously.
