2026 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Totally agree, it's not how one starts, but how one finishes. Am a bit callous when I read, "am so grateful to get that offer from tOSU". Yeah, certainly get that. Almost like it sets the floor for the guy, as far as NIL goes. Once more, based upon the research Mark Pantoni et al do on these recruits, is that if tOSU offers them, they're worth going after. Seem to recollect, Alabama going into the last week of recruiting, only to snatch up 5+ 5*s on signing day, that no one saw coming, and winning the mythical recruiting championship, only celebrated in the next issue of Lindy's or Athalon in the fall. Now it's the same, but different with NIL. Cannot blame the recruits, heck, an 18 year old becoming a millionaire just because he's good at playing a game? (maybe a tad jealous, methinks). Go Bucks!

In response to the post from @calibuck in the KDW thread:

Dude, it’s March 2! I’ve seen a post like this a number of times on multiple boards, and my response is always the same: these kids are still in high school! They are teenagers in high school, they still have class, some drivers Ed, some may have jobs, some help their parents, they’re still KIDS. In the era of NIL it seems that fans think that because they get paid, that all of the sudden their school is now obsolete. This time last year I think OSU only had about 6 or so commits, they have 4 now. But that’s because they had several weeks where they were busy, you know winning a national championship. USC is currently #1, with 13 commits, but they didn’t make the CFP. The top 5 teams, 2 were in the CFP, but Oregon lost in round 2 and Ped St in the next round. They had several extra weeks to recruits kids while the OSU staff had to gameplan. If anyone had to choose, would you rather lose in an earlier round if it meant you possibly have a top 5 class in March? I sure as heck wouldn’t, the teams play to win a Natty, not win a mythical recruiting championship. Be patient, summer camps and visits haven’t even started yet. Coaches have just been hired, schemes need to be ironed out. OSU will once again finish with a top 5 class, top 10 at worst, and still field one of the most talented teams in the nation.

:worry: Best could do, pnuts, this is me chilling....I'll get better during the Big Dance, but for now, it's recruiting season. And yes, in my heart of hearts, I do know what you said to be true.
Naw, recruiting season doesn't start until kids are out of school in May. Most of these coaches haven't even seen a player in action since state finals at the end of November. By May players can get faster, stronger, lazier, disinterested, hit a growth spurt, etc

Would opine that NIL cash is also utilized to pay some 'extra' for coaches? Certainly understand that the NIL donors want to see their money on the field, but also see as a chicken and egg thing. Do good coaches indicate better recruits? Would say yes. Do good players mean good coaches? Probably also yes. Can improve rep by coaching up 2*s to 4*s, but more traction in coaching up 4*s into 5*s. Just the mutterings of someone who likes to find reasoning in things. Go Bucks! PS, heartily agree that strengthening the 'middle' of the B10 is a wonderful thing.
As to not clutter up the recruits thread, I'll respond to your post in the general thread for the recruit's year.

IMO, nothing extra is paid to coaches as far as NIL is concerned, NIL meaning: Name, Image and Likeness is solely for players who play the games and the fans come to see. A regular OSU fan I bet has no clue who Matt Guerrieri or Keenan Bailey is. Us degenerates on message boards know these coaches, but the average fan doesn't even know who Kayden McDonald or Mylan Graham are, they certainly won't know who Carlos Locklyn is. Donors pay to secure talent that wins games, coaches honestly in college have to recruit more than scheme. Coaching 2stars to 4stars is for programs like Rutgers and Colorado St. At OSU, Georgia, Tenn, Texas, etc, you're expected to land the best year in and year out. If OSU got an OL class with 5 2-3star players, the site and all other Buckeyes would melt down and everyone would call for Bowen's job. What it seems is that coaches tell the collectives who their interested and the collectives make deals with the players and their representatives, no different than pro sports. The coaches have no say in the deals other than how high they are willing to go with the deals in matching other offers. At the end of the day the collectives have the real power. And the coaches are compensated from the schools very well, so no need for NIL deals for them

Thought I read that the MSU alums kicked in 50% of their head football coach's salary to get a star hire. Probably above and beyond NIL stuff, but that's where I got the inspiration for the question....thanks for clearing the fog away, pnuts.
Yeah, boosters CAN do that if they want, but that's also MSU. OSU has the funds to pay Day. Heck most programs do, but MSU is a basketball school, I'm sure the school has no problem paying Izzo. Heck coach's are making enough to even help with NIL:
https://www.si.com/fannation/name-i...amount that should be cut from Gundy's salary.
His current salary of $7.75 million will be reduced and redistributed to OSU players in the form of NIL and revenue sharing. With this, Gundy's buyout will also be reduced. The disagreement between the two parties came from varying views on the amount that should be cut from Gundy's salary.

I have no problem if coaches with their salaries going higher and higher using some of their funds on their players. Recruiting is easily THE most important aspect of CFB. As good as Saban was, he's absolutely nothing without his countless #1 recruiting classes. Same with Meyer, schemes and time management only mean so much in college, talent acquisition is paramount. Though I don't expect every coach to do it, I can see some definitely restructuring to make up for NIL.

Sooo, it's not the 'X's and the O's', but the 'Jimmies and the Joes'? Can't argue, but see the need for a nice blend. In prior days, the J & J resided in a place (ND), where they turned 5*'s into 3*'s.....and am certain others went the other way. Anyway, point taken. I, for one, am noticing that the playing field has been leveled (SECwise), with the advent of NIL offerings to the players. But, hey, I'm an tOSU alum, and we've got deep pockets as well.

Just sayin': Off to a slow start; however, in recruiting it is all about "how you finish".....
