2024 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

COULD OHIO STATE WIN THE NATIONAL RECRUITING TITLE?

Air Noland

Air Noland (Nick Lucero/Rivals.com)
An SEC program has won the national recruiting title every year dating back to 2016. In fact, since the Rivals team recruiting rankings debuted in 2002, Texas and USC are the only non-SEC programs to have finished at the top of the Rivals Team Recruiting Rankings. Ohio State has finished No. 2 overall on multiple occasions throughout the years, but has yet to win it all. This could finally be the year.
The Buckeyes recently overtook Georgia for the top spot in the 2024 team rankings, and with signing day still a few months away, a recruiting crown that is well within reach is far from a foregone conclusion.
Ohio State will likely need to hold on to all of its five-star commits in Jeremiah Smith,
Air Noland
, Justin Scott and
Eddrick Houston
to keep the top spot. Should the Buckeyes lose any of those elite commits it would likely require five-star bumps from one or more of its current four-star pledges in Ian Moore, Mylan Graham and Bryce West.

The best case scenario for Ohio State to become the first Big Ten recruiting champion of the Rivals era would be to hold onto all of the current five-star commits and then get a bump from one of the four-stars.

Updated RB07OSU projected class, not a ton to update but there is enough change in the recruiting wind to warrant an update:

QB: Air Noland (top 5 QB, can't wait to have him in the 614)
RB: James Peoples (solid commit, great person and player)
RB: Jordan Lyle (really balling out, might be the guy in this class but I am thrilled to see the battle with Peoples)
RB: SWD (I have to admit, I am not convinced he actually has a spot...see Nave)
WR: JJ Smith (absurd talent, maybe the best WR prospect to come out since Julio and AJ Green)
WR: Mylan Graham (5* verified, great player that will tear it up here)
WR: Jeremiah McClellan (probably will get a 5* after this season, he is unreal

WR: Chance Robinson (will be my most controversial pick here because we don't need another WR, an opinion I would agree with...but this kid is so good we take him if he wants in)
TE: Demarion Witten (dude is so underrated, can ball at a high level and crazy athletic for his size)
TE: Max Leblanc (solid)
OL: Ian Moore (never wavered, future 3 year starter at RT imo)
OL: Devontae Armstrong (will be a good OG with a few pounds and coaching)
OL: Deontae Armstrong (could be an elite LT, just needs a couple years of development physically and work on the technique)

OL: Jordan Seaton (this is a reach, but I think the NIL pockets open to get this kid to Columbus and we have been near the top his whole recruitment...if not, expect a reach at OT or early transfer portal inquiries)
DE: Amaris Williams (also somewhat of a reach, but we have momentum here and need another DE big time...added to Houston and our DTs below, this would be a great DL class)
DE: Eddrick Houston (absolute monster and legit 5* prospect)
DT: Justin Scott (same as above, 5* monster and could play immediately here)
DT: Eric Mensah (I think we found a diamond in the rough here, lots of explosion and great size for a DT, just rough around the edges in technique)
LB: Garrett Stover (going to be a stud, just needs to beef up a little but won't be a problem with his frame)
LB: Payton Pierce (really high on this kid, so much so that I don't think we need to add another LB to this class)
DB: Aaron Scott (strongly feel he is one of the next great CBs at OSU)
DB: Bryce West (will dominate along with Scott)
DB: Miles Lockhart (excellent athlete, he should be good but just isn't as polished as Scott and West at the moment)
DB: Jaylen McClain (really great safety prospect and probably underrated, happy to have him in this class)

DB: Terhyon Nichols (we need another safety and this kid is a stud...keep him in Ohio and we round out a very good DB class)

- That would be a heck of a class if we can pull it off, though Seaton and Williams I wouldn't hold my breath on...that part is more of a wish list. I would want to see one more DE and almost put Pickett Jr. on there, but feel he is a strong Miami lean right now...we need another DE in this class and probably two more, but might have to hit the portal there.

- I would also anticipate hitting the portal again for an OT and a safety, probably a LB for depth with the Eich, Chambers and Simon's imminent departures. Even though we play two LBs in Knowles' scheme and Hicks/Powers are going to be good imo, who knows on Reese (could end up at DE), Melton (might be out of eligibility and also more of a DE), Carrico I haven't heard a word on, and we just brought Nigel Glover in from the portal and no idea what we have there. So LB could be an overlooked area in terms of immediate need...as much as I like Stover and Pierce, I don't see either as ready to go their true frosh year.

- At OT, I probably don't need to even comment there, we need to swing for the fences in the portal. At safety, we really need two more in addition to McClain, preferably one in the '24 class and one in the portal. We play three safeties in actuality under Knowles and we have Ransom, Proctor and Martinez all gone after this year. Ja'Had Carter may also be (listed as a senior, but I don't know his eligibility). The cupboards are not exactly bare with Sonny Styles (should be a star), Hartford (love what I have seen so far), Stokes (no idea where he went, but looked promising), and Bonsu (likely a redshirt but was a recruit I liked)...but the numbers are not ideal, we need to add one more imo.

Carter is eligible to return in 2024

A three-year starter for the Orange, Carter will have two seasons of eligibility remaining with the Buckeyes.

Carter is eligible to return in 2024

I thought that he had another year, thanks for looking that up. Don't know what we have there yet (I think he has been banged up and hasn't got to play much), but I'm sure it will be a net positive to have him back. But in any event we need one more back there in the next season, likely two more and a combo of a portal guy and '24 class guy seems ideal to me.

Great writeup! One question. Or maybe two. Which position is easiest and which is hardest for a true freshman to see real playing time their first year on campus? I'll hang up now;-)
Thank you! I would say the easiest positions to play on offense as a true frosh are RB and WR...you have to block to earn a spot and that is easier said than done, but if you have the natural ability to make plays then you will see the field.

On defense, I would say DE...even if you don't have the technique, if you are truly elite you will see the field. A close second would be CB imo and not because the position is easy, it really is the hardest in terms of getting exposed. But if you truly know how to get into a hip-pocket and can play the ball in air, those are traits you are born with mostly and you have them coming in. Denzel Burke is the most recent example of that, kid just has the traits to play the position that cannot be taught.

But you also asked about hardest. On offense, easily OT imo...not only is the playbook hard to learn, you come in undersized most of the time against experienced guys on the DL. Next up is QB (and probably just as tough), you have to know every player's role on every play and have the spotlight on you...big reason why I don't get the McCord negativity, kid is doing a great job. On defense, I would say DT and Safety. DT is more of a size/technique issue, but there is a reason why it is rare to see a true frosh out there at a high level. Safety it is hard to essentially be the QB of the defense and analyze what an offense is doing. That has somewhat change for our defense with three safeties, but the guy in Ransom's current role has the toughest job on the defense imo,

You forgot about Cedrick Hawkins from the ‘23 class at S too.
Other than that excellent prediction and excellent post!
