2024 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

From the 11W board:
As Birm pointed out during his latest Talking Stuff, it’s not a coincidence that Texas has been arguably the best team at recruiting OL the past two seasons after their OL NIL fund started where each OL gets 50k a year, “to aid charitable causes.”

Basically said until Ohio State has a booster who’s willing to step up and do the same these losses for elite tackles will continue to happen.

Makes complete sense, and Idk many programs with boosters willing to fork over upwards of $800k+ for one position group. Because this payment is for the ENTIRE room. The silver lining in '25 and '26 is the strong OL in OH, and leading early for the kid from tsun

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Arizona three-star defensive end Deshawn Warner doesn’t hold an offer from Ohio State as of yet, but the Kansas commit has garnered some interest from Larry Johnson and could be a player the Buckeyes make a move on if other targets don’t work out.

So naive question- if it’s that simple and tied to NIL, why don’t we just spend less on WR and more on OL?

I don’t think it’s that OSU’s NIL is spending more on WRs, but Hartline has showed kids a way to making the NFL, Frye has not in his short time. Also, many top OL have resided in the south or west and the top targets look for big NIL money, and the OSU collectives haven’t raised enough to compete with the southern schools. Nothing anyone Can do if one coach is really good at recruiting his position, regardless of NIL, and the other has a more uphill battle with his position. And not having the funds to pay an entire position group like the OL is a major obstacle. Day can publicly say the funds they need, but it’s up to the collectives to raise those funds

Well Frye did get a lot of O-line drafted last year and it would have helped if Dawand didn't self sabotage. Hopefully that pays dividends later this year or next. But the O-line play right now is well woof

It could be just me, but it appears that tOSU coaches are focusing more on the 'potential' of the 3*s, and less on the 5*s that are out there. Assume that it's because the NIL $ are limited, and between giving/keeping the current recruits in town, cannot go whole hog on the apparent bidding wars that the more highly recruits command. Read where MHjr 'earns' upwards of $1mil, which is a nice chunk of change for a 19 year old (maybe 20), so will assume we take care of what we have before we reach for someone new. Do like the philosophy of paying those that produce, rather than big bucks from the git-go. Hartline and Johnson have proven records for developing their players for the league, but the rest of the coaches haven't done as well (rest are relatively new to S&G). Maybe Congress will 'cap' NIL, much like NBA, NFL, BB do. Dunno. Until then, remember that tOSU has alot to sell/offer recruits. Just gotta find the right guys. Go Bucks!

This late in the game, I think they almost have to look for late bloomers who pass the eye test. High school football is starting to wind down, so there is a lot of tape out there now.
