OHIO STATE

Kayden McDonald
The Buckeyes' lone commitment in October was a big one, and it came from four-star defensive tackle

Kayden McDonald
out of Georgia. McDonald is a massive presence on the interior defensive line and he has a level of twitch and athleticism that you rarely see from a 310-pound high school recruit. Not only does McDonald have the ability to take on double teams and dominate against the run, he also brings the rare but highly coveted element of an interior pass rush to the Buckeyes' defensive front.

McDonald's pledge to Ohio State was important for a number of reasons, but the fact that the Buckeyes were able to go into SEC country and pull a highly coveted player may be the most notable part of this recruitment. His commitment also cemented Ohio State's No. 1 Big Ten class, which will be hard for any school in the conference to match moving forward.

Quick Hits
  • 2023 three-star running back Trey Cornist of Winton Woods (OH) added a trio of offers on Tuesday from Kentucky, Michigan State, and Western Kentucky. The Cincinnati native has yet to secure an offer from the Buckeyes but is a likely candidate for one, if Ohio State decides it wants to add a second back to the fold to pair with four-star running back Mark Fletcher of American Heritage (FL).

THE HURRY-UP: RYAN DAY BELIEVES OHIO STATE CONTINUING TO STACK WINS WILL HELP THE BUCKEYES FINISH THE 2023 CLASS STRONG, AIDAN STEINFELDT AND JAKE WHEELOCK WILL VISIT OSU SATURDAY

Just less than six weeks from now, the start of the Early Signing Period will commence, and OSU will have the majority, if not all, of its 2023 recruiting class wrapped up.

As it stands, Ohio State has 21 commits in its current cycle and the No. 5-ranked recruiting class nationally. None of those prospects appear to be in danger of flipping elsewhere, like when the Buckeyes lost cornerback Terrance Brooks to Texas on National Signing Day last year.

But there are still a few spots left to be filled in the current class, and Ryan Day and the Ohio State football staff plan on being diligent over the next month and a half to finish the year strong. The Buckeyes remain heavily in on five-star defensive end prospects Damon Wilson, Keon Keeley and Matayo Uiagalelei. They’d also love to get Alabama five-star safety Alabama commit Caleb Downs and five-star offensive tackle Samson Okunlola on campus for the Michigan game, but those two visits are far from finalized.

Ohio State would also take four-star Tennessee linebacker Arion Carter should he choose to opt into the class, and the Buckeyes will get a chance to make their pitch to him this weekend when he takes his official visit. In the meantime, what’s the biggest priority from Day as they try to sell OSU to their last few remaining targets?

“Well, we can keep winning because that plays into it big time,” Day said Tuesday of what Ohio State can do to put themselves in the best position to finish the recruiting class strong. “I think that all the recruits want to see is how well you're playing on Saturday and that what you said in recruiting is actually happening. I think a big part of that is on defense, some of the things that we've talked to recruits about on the defensive side, you know, they had to see it with their own eyes, and I think that they're doing that.

Daniel Harris de-commits from Georgia football

Georgia is back down to 20 commitments. Miami (Fla.) Gulliver Prep four-star cornerback Daniel Harris de-committed from Georgia on Monday. Penn State is the program with momentum in his recruitment after hosting him on an official visit on June 24, but Georgia will continue to recruit Harris to potentially get him back in the class. Harris initially committed to Georgia on July 1 after also taking official visits to Michigan (June 3), Ohio State (June 10), and Georgia (June 17). The 6-foot-2, 175-pound prospect is considered the nation's No. 154 overall prospect, No. 18 cornerback, and No. 37 overall recruit in the state of Florida per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.

In all reality, the Buckeyes are likely content rolling with the three cornerbacks already committed to completing the 2023 cycle. Harris has picked up several 247Sports Crystal Ball Projections to Penn State over the past 24 hours, so the Buckeyes may face the 6-foot-2, 175-pound prospect in the coming years.

So instead of cluttering Mark Fletcher's thread with new RB names, I figured to continue the conversation over here. What I've been hearing from guys like Birm, AE, Noons and AG, are look out for OSU to go hard after: Reuben Owens and Justice Haynes. They're trying to get both to visit for The Game. This will be an uphill battle to flip either. Another name to watch for: Jamarion Wilcox from GA. Wilcox is someone who is a definite plan b, along the likes of the 2 in state RBs(Cornist and Keys).
Different analysts have their favorite late in the process RB. Noons likes Keys, Birm and AE like Cornist and AG likes Wilcox. AG is the only one who believes that Cornist isn't a RB that can be in the class solo. He thinks he's only a complementary RB, though IMO that argument could've been used for Miyan as well...
IMO, there is no need to even consider a RB in the portal. The portal, to me should be used for a player who you believe will get significant PT, unless that player is fine knowing that they are primarily for depth. A RB in '23 will have very few carries if all 4 RBs are healthy(I'm not even thinking that Williams will leave early).
If OSU does pick up one of the late season RBs, my pick would be Cornist. I like his size and speed over Keys and Wilcox. Keys is more of an old school big lumbering RB. Wilcox is good, but doesn't have the speed that you'd expect for someone of his size. But he runs very hard, and is the definition of "plays bigger than his size". But Cornist is the fastest of the 3, and is also very hard to bring down(avg 9yds/car on the season).

Bear in mind that more names can emerge as well. Day, Alford and staff will scour the country for a RB they feel can complement the roster
