2023 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Yeah, that list is irrelevant when you're using it for players who are set to be seniors in HS. They were in grade school 10yrs ago. It'd be more accurate of their view of OSU defensively of you take the last 5 drafts, at least they would've been in Middle school by then. And of those last 5 drafts we had 8 guys drafted in the 1st round, and only 4 of them are producing in the NFL. So that's not a good track record.

So if a teenager who plays defense looks at OSU, working against OSU is putting few guys high in the draft, the defense has been subpar and erratic, a new coaching staff, and then the cherry on top is there's no up front NIL money. It's a recipe for our current stretch
Nick Bosa, Chase Young, Denzel Ward, Marshon Lattimore, Jeff Okudah, Sam Hubbard, Jordan Fuller, and Pete Werner all seem pretty relevant to me and they were all drafted in the past 5 drafts. As someone else said, the average recruit isn't breaking down film of Kowles's defense to see if it's a good fit, and they don't remember the Buckeye defense giving up 491 yards passing and 5 TDs to Michael Penix in 2020. What they do see is Nick Bosa and Chase Young winning DROY ... Denzel Ward and Marshon Lattimore getting $100 million contracts ... and a whole host of Buckeye defenders representing tOSU on draft day.

My fear is less what the recruits break down / look up on their own. It’s more what the other staffs do for them.

So Ohio State was paying better 5 years ago when we were recruiting defensive players more consistently, but now other schools are out paying us? That makes no sense.

I think the fact that our defense has been a flaming turd for three of the last four years, and subsequent staff turnover, has the effect of non-local recruits being unwilling to go to school far away for an uncertain outcome. That seems more likely to be than schools out paying us.

USC & & LSU & UCF been rolling out dominant defenses the past few years?

Disagree. Recruits see, and the SEC coaches are pushing the Ineptitude of OSU defenses in big games. No they don't remember what Michael Penix did, but they damn sure remember Davonte Smith putting up video game numbers in only 1 half of the NC! They also remember OSU getting manhandled and out schemed by Oregon and scUM last year. Add that with them not knowing how Knowles' scheme will look next year. For all the excitement OSU fans have, it has taken him multiple years to get his defense going. And I, like most OSU fans know that the scenarios are different due to the talent that he now has. But these recruits aren't looking at this process as fans. And those million dollar NFL contracts don't trump the level of inconsistency that this defense has had since Hafley left.

Hate to be the middle man here, but the residual effect of the Bosas, Young, Lattimore, etc. are still there to some extent. We are still getting good recruits on the defensive side of the ball and I am sure that effect is still alive in helping thta. However, the utter inconsistency of the defense as a whole and a new staff is hurting for the time being. Most of recruiting is relationships and with almost an entirely new staff, those bridges are still being built. I think you would have seen slightly better recruiting results if we kept Coombs and the gang because of the relationship factor. But we had to improve and sever ties. You have to know going into a staff turnover that there will be some (hopefully) short term recruiting lag. We are seeing it and the downside with the early signing period is the new staff may not get a chance to prove itself before most of the top players ink with other teams.

As to this class, I think LJ Sr will clean up per the usual at DL...plenty of great options on DL and lets not forget landing Moore at DT recently. Point is that I am not worried about DL. At DB, I love the guys we have committed still, but who knows how solid some of those commits are and I think we need at least one more in any event. The concern to me is LB, after Curtis I really don't see any appealing prospects we are in on. Thank god we got Hicks and Powers last class. I realize the LB position is not as important in Knowles' scheme in terms of numbers, but we have to bring in at least one (probably two) LBs in this class regardless. Who that is I don't know.

Are you still worried about the LB recruiting with the number of LBs we have on the roster? We have about 6 guys that aren’t draft eligible yet and only 2 play, and if you include Styles that’s 7. Would this class be fine with only 1 LB?

Is something deeper going on right now? Lockwood seemed as solid as it gets and all it took was a Bama offer to flip him?

I think what is happening is Ohio State is telling 17 year old kids that if they come to Ohio State and work hard and produce in a couple years their hard work will be rewarded. And other schools are telling 17 year old kids here is a big bag of money. And...the 17 year old kids are choosing the big bag of money.

I guess the transfer portal could be used to offset this. In a couple years when the "take the bag now" guys don't secure a starting position at their original school.

There are only so many spots and the SEC schools are handing out these NIL dealings like hotcakes.

That’s definitely happening with most kids. But I believe it was said about Lockwood for a while , that he was waiting for a Bama offer, and if that happened it would change a lot for him

I know that we’re supposed to be doom and gloom right now
But AG is saying that he feels much better where we stand with Bonsu now, but thinks that Fagan is ours if we want him really him by missing out on Bonsu and he likes where we are with Matayo though we all know this isn’t close to over. And Downs will be pursued until he signs.
If we get Bonsu and eventually sign Matayo then this is still a home run class. Idk if we even need to replace a CB for Dijon, just go after the best available.
