2022 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Well, here's what Ryan Day has to say:

Just some of his comments....

  • "I've very excited about this class." Day says he expects to sign more than 20 players in the class in total. Day says "to say that I'm not, at the very least, concerned about what's going on around the country right now, that would not be accurate."
  • On Sonny Styles, Day says "he's gonna be a very good player for us." Day says Styles' family told him he always "played up" in age anyway, and Day says he will support the decision to reclassify.
  • On the transfer portal, Day says "somebody on our team could say that they're coming and leave tomorrow, too." Day says "we've already had somebody that was supposed to be in this class come and leave." Day says "it's certainly very new, and it's happening very fast."
  • On Jim Knowles' impact on recruiting and evaluating talent: "Schematically, we're looking for the same type of players." Day says the defense will still look like a 4-2-5, "like we've been working towards."
  • Day says he will visit with Knowles over the next couple weeks and after the Rose Bowl to "figure out what this thing's gonna look like" on defense.
  • Day says Ohio State and the coaches aren't allowed to set up NIL deals, and that it's "concerning" that there are people outside of the university influencing young players. "That being said, our guys have benefitted tremendously from NIL."
  • Day says the Buckeyes' goal is to have eight cornerbacks on the roster, and that if they don't after the Rose Bowl, they might have to pick somebody up through the transfer portal.
  • Day says he doesn't think anything against the rules is going on across the country, but "the deals that are being made have nothing to do with the university itself." Day says "it's kind of out of our hands, which is concerning."
  • Day says he doesn't want the date of signing day to change right now, because it would just create one more thing that would be new and different amid many changes in college football.
  • On needing to land a couple more defensive linemen in this class: "It will get done, one way or another. We gotta have eight defensive tackles and eight defensive ends."
  • On Knowles, Day says "we're gonna start fresh on (Jan. 2)." Day says he will show up for a few days to get a lay of the land before that, though.
  • Day says he feels like Master Teague will be able to play in the Rose Bowl despite missing a good chunk of the season.

We’ll see how this evolves, but if tOSU is going to sit back and refuse to connect players to NIL cash, I think we essentially turn into Michigan (a consistently above average team that periodically has very good year when everything aligns).

Good luck consistently recruiting at an elite level against other major universities offering solid $$$.

It’s basically the Mike Gundy logic he used with Knowles coming to Columbus.

Im not a big fan of tOSU approach, and I’m not a huge fan of publicly griping about it either. Comes across as a bit whiny and can easily be spun around to seem “anti-player” rights/benefits.

I think Dabo is about to run into serious issues at Clemson with how out of touch he seems at moment (he’s like Ryan Day x’s 10 on issue).

The problem is by rule they can't. That's what bothers Day not the NIL. Basically he is saying deals are being made by boosters to get kids now. The coaching staff can't control NIL and who offers what for going where. I'm not even sure the wink wink talk to these people is "legal"

I fully understand why they shouldn't be involved but by that nature it makes it nearly impossible to regulate and prevent tampering

It is legal if you want a 3rd party to arrange it like Kentucky and Texas have done.

It’s not a complicated formula. You get an influential booster to set-up a fund that local businesses and individuals can contribute to, knowing it will be used for NIL $$$.

Sitting back and telling kids once you get on campus you will have an opportunity to sign an NIL deal is much different than telling a kid “listen, I’m not sure how much in NIL $$$ you will get, but there is a fund in Columbus specifically set-up to accommodate our players”.

The coaches actually don’t even need to say anything….the “fund” would have ability to reach out to players directly. That is what Texas does currently.

Our issue is we have an NIL compliance program designed to help kids understand how they can benefit from NIL and deals they can sign. But we don’t have a direct “fund” set-up yet, and it doesn’t sound like Day really wants that approach either.

I’d again, just say, good luck pulling all these kids from Texas if one program is offering cash and we aren’t. It’s not going to end well…..

Yes I think what bothers Day about it is I don't think OSU can vet the NIL people and make sure no unsavory crowd is involved. Basically you relying on a fund of unknown actors to make sure kids get paid and not scammed. That's a lot of trust in people you can't vet from who knows where

As much as people hate making players employees it certainly is a lot cleaner and controllable then NIL.

Both Tejas and Kentucky created the “3rd Party Fund” using leaders from their official university booster clubs, so I don’t think it’s really that complicated.

More of a philosophical question that needs to be answered and different schools are finding themselves on different sides of fence.

All they’re actually doing is splitting off a section of the boosters club to “ear-mark” money directly for athletes. So now someone who may donate $1,000 a year to the UT Athletic Department may donate $800 to the UT Athletic Department and $200 to the “UT 3rd Party NIL Fund”…..or more likely $800 to players and $200 to Athletic Department since most people care primarily about football.

It gives the boosters control over how their money is spent when going to fund. They know it’s directly for players.

Yeah that's probably the most controllable way. To do it. But also the one with the most risk to university should they do something sketchy as it's tied directly to their booster club and there is no deniability at that point. So basically the booster club better be paying a lawyer to check all their actions.

As I understand, universities and coaches can't be involved in distributing NIL money to recruits/potential recruits. That seems like it's either illegal or a conflict of interest that needs to be righted if they're using leaders from official university booster clubs

State by state. Laws are totally different by state.

None of us know.

I prob didn’t word it the best…in both situations, guys who were very high on the totem pole of official booster club for those universities, left those official roles to become the leaders of the “3rd party NIL” group.

This works very well in that the “3rd Party NIL” will have communication with official booster club and there absolutely will be some partnership/strategy. Their end goals will be very similar which is a great football program.

But those leaders of the official boister clubs who are now leading the “3rd Party Funds” are perfect because those are the guys with the connections and drive the large scale booster drives. So now that same guy who used to call about stadium renovations and a few thousand dollars is now calling about the 2023 class and how you can contribute…
