2022 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

I made reference to this earlier and string me up but this kinda feels like

NIL = Citizens United
Boosters/3rd Party NIL/NIL Pools = PACs/Super PACs
Coaches = The parties ….

i mean given the crapshow of laws being different in each state its a mess..but there can always be that wink wink nudge nudge and not “officially” coordinating where those NIL Dollars go … its just a matter of how dirty and indebted do you want to be to those behind the NIL Dollars…

I prob didn’t word it the best…in both situations, guys who were very high on the totem pole of official booster club for those universities, left those official roles to become the leaders of the “3rd party NIL” group.

This works very well in that the “3rd Party NIL” will have communication with official booster club and there absolutely will be some partnership/strategy. Their end goals will be very similar which is a great football program.

But those leaders of the official boister clubs who are now leading the “3rd Party Funds” are perfect because those are the guys with the connections and drive the large scale booster drives. So now that same guy who used to call about stadium renovations and a few thousand dollars is now calling about the 2023 class and how you can contribute…
Gotcha. That makes a whole lot more sense

Exactly the type of thing I meant when I said it's an easy work around.

OSU has a simple choice, compete in this space or get left behind.

Well, here's what Ryan Day has to say:

Just some of his comments....

  • "I've very excited about this class." Day says he expects to sign more than 20 players in the class in total. Day says "to say that I'm not, at the very least, concerned about what's going on around the country right now, that would not be accurate."
  • On Sonny Styles, Day says "he's gonna be a very good player for us." Day says Styles' family told him he always "played up" in age anyway, and Day says he will support the decision to reclassify.
  • On the transfer portal, Day says "somebody on our team could say that they're coming and leave tomorrow, too." Day says "we've already had somebody that was supposed to be in this class come and leave." Day says "it's certainly very new, and it's happening very fast."
  • On Jim Knowles' impact on recruiting and evaluating talent: "Schematically, we're looking for the same type of players." Day says the defense will still look like a 4-2-5, "like we've been working towards."
  • Day says he will visit with Knowles over the next couple weeks and after the Rose Bowl to "figure out what this thing's gonna look like" on defense.
  • Day says Ohio State and the coaches aren't allowed to set up NIL deals, and that it's "concerning" that there are people outside of the university influencing young players. "That being said, our guys have benefitted tremendously from NIL."
  • Day says the Buckeyes' goal is to have eight cornerbacks on the roster, and that if they don't after the Rose Bowl, they might have to pick somebody up through the transfer portal.
  • Day says he doesn't think anything against the rules is going on across the country, but "the deals that are being made have nothing to do with the university itself." Day says "it's kind of out of our hands, which is concerning."
  • Day says he doesn't want the date of signing day to change right now, because it would just create one more thing that would be new and different amid many changes in college football.
  • On needing to land a couple more defensive linemen in this class: "It will get done, one way or another. We gotta have eight defensive tackles and eight defensive ends."
  • On Knowles, Day says "we're gonna start fresh on (Jan. 2)." Day says he will show up for a few days to get a lay of the land before that, though.
  • Day says he feels like Master Teague will be able to play in the Rose Bowl despite missing a good chunk of the season.

More 11W discussion on Ohio State's 2022 recruits:

“We’ll probably end up signing 20-plus guys here when it’s all said and done and there’s some more that we may get in the boat here in the next couple days,” Day said. “Some other guys that we have communication with that we feel good about going into February. So there’s still a lot to be done here in the next month.”

The only thing that is clear is that the rules are not.

I don't see how the NCAA has any role in this, which would leave it to the courts. That would mean somebody has to suffer damages. So one school has to take another to court? That would be fun.

I do know this. When two men have a dispute and agree to take it outside and settle it with their fists, the winner will always be the guy who pulls out his knife.

So while I agree that OSU needs to be more proactive (or so it seems since we don't really know what is happening behind the scenes) just how far do we want them to go?

Of course Day is not the kind of guy to pull out a knife, so we need to cough up $100,000,000 and bring in John Calipari. If that happens I am all for turning my attention to the two time NCFA champs and rolling the clock back a century or so. We can get Peacock to televise it and I wont have to drop Youtube TV so I can keep ESPN.

So at the heart of it all...what do you find immoral or even objectionable about businesses paying players for use of their NIL?

I ask because that's all that's happening. Can some schools/booster groups/whatever find ways to make more money for their kids? Sure. This is America. Our business is business. Go compete. Second place is a set of steak knives.

No babies have been punched or sacrificed at alters. The sport was never clean, the players have always been paid and few ever were actually scholars.

If people want to lament the loss of a childhood fantasy about CFB, that's up to them but in reality, kids are no longer indentured servants and can make money off their NIL. That's all that's changed and it isn't all bad. It's just different.

Beautifully stated.

I’d also just add Jimbo Fisher prob had line of day after landing #1 class….he was asked about how he handles the new NIL landscape.

“NIL has been around forever, we just didn’t talk about it openly. Now we can.”

Anyone who acts like NIL is going to destroy the sport has had their head stuck 8 feet into the sand.

I was listening to one of the Buckeye podcasts, and they mentioned him being a complete TE, and he’d instantly be he best TE on the OSU roster. From how serious the coaches are looking at Stogner, I’m thinking they don’t think the corps of: Stover,Royer, Scott and Hart are ready to take over

Following Rattler to SC:

TEs don't receive a lot of targets in tOSU's passing game, so they often get overlooked in the recruiting frenzy. However, their blocking is critical to the O, and I continue to maintain that the lack of TE depth hurt the ground game in '21. When Stover was bouncing between TE & LB but not exactly lighting the world on fire at either, it tells me we don't have enough good TEs or LBs ... and no wonder we struggled in the ground game on both offense and defense.

Paramount that a couple of young TEs on roster emerge with Ruck gone and Stogner going elsewhere.

Teams have had very recent success with transfer portal TE’s.

Fortunately, I think it’s one position where past performance shows almost zero indication of what they can bring.

We love blocking TE’s. Ruckert was a better pass catching TE than blocker although he wasn’t a terrible blocker….I’d submit he wasn’t at the same level as Luke Farrell though (in run blocking).

They may want to bring Hamilton back from the DL to TE

We don’t really throw to TE anyways, so I’m kinda good with bringing extra tackle in to be honest. I thought Donovan Jackson at TE were highly successful this year, TBH.

Urban did it in 2012 when he thought our offensive line was kinda weak.

At some point we should just acknowledge we aren’t going to throw to our TE’s much. So they might as well be elite blockers.

I’m nervous about Gee Scott to be honest. I’m sure most are…..I just don’t see a natural fit although I’d love for us to make him a weapon.

Right?

I'd recruit a kid every year for that spot. Probably dozens of slightly undersized OL in Ohio every year that would kill for a chance to be a PWO big H back/TE/FB kind of guy.
