2021 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Does the rule say three years from high school or three years from high school football? That makes a difference. In addition, if a high school kid didn’t play an entire senior year, chances are they will not be ready to play as a freshman in college. By your logic, this would mean only one year of college. I do not believe they will be ready for the pros.

Pretty sure its 3 years from HS class, not football season.

So this proofs that they can leave for the NFL after their true sophomore year then, right??
The only way they would be able to leave after their true sophomore year is if they completely skipped/missed a full academic year or started college a year after high school. In those cases they would be the required three years removed from high school yet have only been in college two years, which is a scenario which virtually never happens for football.

From an academic standpoint it has been some time since there has been a true correlation between academic year and eligibility year, as witnessed by grad transfers who have been on the clock for 3 years. It is not uncommon for a second year player to be a junior academically.

I am talking about eligibility. I am confident that if there is no season the "clock" will be suspended on all players. So from an eligibility standpoint true Frosh in 2020 will be true Frosh again in 2021. Even a fifth year senior in 2020 would likely get another year as a fifth year senior in 2021. Is that not what they are doing for spring sports?

Thus a true Soph - a player who has been with the team for two years of football - would be draft eligible. I don't know if this syncs with the link above (I think it does under "special eligibility), but there will be adjustments made at every level if we lose a year of football.

I had always assumed a player became draft eligible after 3 college seasons. It was interesting in reading the link to the rules that a player is not actually automatically eligible after 3 years. Rather they are eligible to apply after 3 years. Thus, it appears, when a player “declares” for the draft they are actually only declaring they are going to apply for the draft. Theoretically the Commissioner could still deny the application. Although, I doubt the NFL would ever deny an application. So it’s probably just semantics.

As for draft eligibility it doesn’t appear to me that the college season matters as it relates to third year players. The wording in the rules clearly refers to “NFL seasons” and “date of high school graduation”. The “date of graduation” is already determined. What is unknown is how many “NFL seasons” would occur between now and the 2021 draft. I don’t think the status of the 2020 college season is relevant. What is relevant is if there is a 2020 NFL season. A player that graduated high school in May 2018 (thus is a rising Junior or Redshirt Sophomore assuming they matriculated directly) would be eligible for the next NFL draft that follows the next NFL season since there has already been two “NFL seasons” since May 2018. If the next NFL season is 2020-21 then they would be eligible to apply to be in the 2021 draft regardless of whether there is a 2020 college season.

Realistically, even if there is no 2020-21 NFL season I would be shocked if the NFL didn’t amend their rules to allow those players in.

In his Dotting the Eyes column JBirm mentions two current sophomores...J'yaire Brown and Jacob Matthews...who are dbs in Louisiana that are both interested in playing together possibly at Ohio St. Brown, a cb, is a Buckeye native and has high interest while Matthews, a safety, likes the Buckeyes style of play and enthusiastic crowds and would consider moving north to play with his friend.

Edit..please move to 2022 recruiting
