tOSU Recruiting Discussion

This is my worry as well, Frye going the Stud route to finish the class just to get numbers up to appease Day and the talking heads/fans. OSU doesn't need Grant Toutant types to just fill a roster spot.

Stud was actually a decent recruiter before he got sick.

The large number formula works for Scum. Rarely do I compliment them, but they seem to know what they are doing with their OL.

11W Forums...

So Birm was on 97.1 this morning and was asked about the OL recruiting and where it goes now. He said OSU is pretty much the pick for McFadden and he expected that to be wrapped up in the next few weeks. But it is important to get that done sooner than later.

He said OSU will chase Micah DeBose the rest of the way and hope to get him flipped from Bama.

Plan is to take two tackles in the portal this upcoming offseason that can step in and play.

And if he (and Chip) turn in a NC caliber peformance upfront, then the weighting of stars on the OL needs to be re-evaluated.

Urban's only NC came on the shoulders of the most maligned recruit in history in Darryl Baldwin.

Jim Tressel cancelled Miami forever with 6'3" Rob Sims at LT. Not even RT.

Michigan whipped Bama upfront with two all-world OTs (in red) that were no better than good for Alabama, and I'd argue a good bit below that.

ScUM utilized the Portal masterfully and was using men at OL against the Boys Bama had at DL, that what their biggest factor last year. It showed that a dominant OL can make an above average QB and skill position players look NC caliber. That's why I'm so baffled that so many analysts are against Frye hitting the Portal for OL. An older OT from Rice, who's been in a college S&C program for multiple years isn't intimidated by the former 4 or 5star at DE. Would love for Frye to find another Josh Simmons. It'd be a cheaper NIL option too in certain instances as well

I certainly think so - you have 3 guys that are All B1G caliber, IMO, in Donovan Jackson, Seth McLaughlin, and Josh Simmons. Josh Fryar is at the very least a solid RT. The only truly unknown is Tegra, but how many OLs don't have at least one unknown? And whoever comes out of the Tegra, Hinzman, etc. still beat out a guy like Montgomery, so it will have been earned.

Not for nothing, Chip Kelly is going to make this OL look better than it is, so I'm not sure Frye could have a better situation than this year to have his unit look great.

It is interesting to look at the projected OL this season. Simmons was a low ranked 4* and transfer, but could be one of the better LTs in the nation this season. Jackson was a 5* and like Day 1 or Day 2 draft pick. McGlaughlin was a 3* portal pickup from an elite program. Tegra was a top 100 overall recruit and appears to be coming into form. Fryar is a solid RT like you said and was a 3*. Then you have others like Montgomery, Padilla, Moore, etc. that were highly rated and seem promising. And provided we have the right development and scheme, I do think the OL play will be much better this year.

OL recruiting is certainly finnicky is my point. Sometimes the late offers that seem like a reach work out (Dawand Jones comes to mind). But you do need numbers and I do get a little nervous relying on the Portal every year...it is enticing as @pnuts34 said to have a developed player with experience come in, but we have to make sure that actually pans out. If we get McFadden and two good ones in the portal, then I'll shut up about it haha.
