Pretty certain sure that tOSU brain trust has this factoid ready to show to prospective athletes. And that it goes into some depth. Didn't Paris Johnson ink a lucrative rookie contract? Yeah, this is their pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, not a $120,000 automobile to drive around campus.

With the recent misses that OSU has had on the OL. I can see Frye going hard at the Portal. That collective money that would've gone to Baker, could just as easily go towards a guy that's already been in a college system. I'm not saying rely solely on the portal for OL, but a mix of both. I don't see the loss of Baker being as big if OSU can land for example an all Mountain West or AAC level of player. The convo has been that Baker would've started from Day 1 at OSU, but I took those saying that as tongue in cheek. There's a reason why there have been very very few true frosh OT starters at OSU, and for elite teams in general. Bama is starting a true frosh this year who was rated even higher than Baker, and he's looking worse by the week. The fact that USF and UT DL abused him, may hurt his development long term.

Maybe not the right thread for it but I believe the transfer portal has done serious damage to player development at offensive line across the country. Those guys, possibly above all others, need time for their bodies to develop and to learn the techniques until they are second nature. Not to mention cohesiveness as a unit.

I see what you're saying, but I kind of disagree. Good players that play and are in a 2 deep, usually stay at their respective schools. Guys at smaller tier schools, may leave for larger schools and get more exposure, and possibly bigger NIL deals. I think you can learn and master your technique wherever you go, as long as you the player are putting in the work. I wouldn't want to rely solely on transfer portal for OL talent, as that is a massive risk. But mixing it in with HS players can certainly help. I see the portal as a place that can cover up recruiting misses. OSU missed on Samson Okunla, but no cares as he wouldn't have made the same difference as Josh Simmons has this year. AJ Harris, Dijon Johnson and Kayin Lee were all favored to OSU at one time, but none of that matters now with the immediate play and success of Davison Igbinosun. And if Cutler can lock down 1 OG spot next year, and let some of the younger guys mature, or at worst, he pushes them to be better and he provides solid depth while say a Siereveld wins the spot. Then I think you're in a win/win situation. You just have to use the portal to be smart.
