tOSU Recruiting Discussion

We make fun of ttun fans for saying similar stuff lately I feel.

Going to be a kick in the ick when Houston and Bolden commit to George when there was just absurd buzz two weeks ago saying we could be lining up one of the best classes in school history lol

That's a Charlie Brown football gif though. Every year I hear that we're about to sign the best class in the history of the worldz. It never happens.

How is it any different than hoping to win every game and a national championship every season even though it almost never happens?

Being a miserable sob makes someone right most of the time, but it also makes them a miserable sob. I’m fine with being optimistic about things even though it frequently leads to disappointment.

I feel like most of us aren’t going to be sunshine pumping the fill in options we end up with like the ttun fans always do

It took until this year for our NIL to supposedly be competitive.....and even then, it's probably not. Expecting a school that isn't Bama/Georgia/whoever wants to be aTM or Miami and just flat out purchase players to be #1 when it comes to signing day is a fools errand.

Expecting to sign Ohio State’s current top targets and expecting to sign the #1 class are two different things, in my opinion.

We’re probably talking past each other because I’m thinking about my (what I’d like to think is reasonable despite being optimistic) interaction with recruiting versus how the worst aspects of the fanbase interact with it, which it seems like you’re focusing on.

I agree that outright buying a class Texas A&M-style is bad and not what Ohio State is, or should be, doing. I also think those schools are learning very quickly themselves that it’s not an effective or sustainable strategy because it creates a culture mess in the locker room and they run out of money, much of it wasted on busts.

At the same time, Ohio State still needs a competitive NIL program to get the kids that they target as a cultural fit. I have no reason to doubt the insiders like Birm who say Ohio State got its act together on the NIL front.

It’s still a brand new world of recruiting that will take some time for the coaches, players, and fans to get used to—I think things will eventually settle down and will be more predictable, which will hopefully allow Ohio State to utilize its massive advantages more consistently.

I’m glad Day is our HC and am confident he will continue to balance the Ohio State brotherhood culture with NIL deals as best as you can reasonably hope for—in addition to balancing the brotherhood, developed here, culture with the transfer portal—it’s a mess and I understand why people are frustrated with it, but again, I’m glad Day is the guy in charge to lead us through this moment as many brand new realities of college football get figured out.

I'm just referring to how every year I hear from people on Birm's level (I don't pay attention to which insider says what) that says we're on pace to sign the best recruiting class in the history of the universe. Then, not only do we not do that.....we don't even finish #1 for that year.

I don't think the A&M/Miami model is sustainable long term to begin with. It might take a couple more years to slow down but eventually it will be realized that it doesn't work by the program/boosters fronting the bill and the players.

That is the key difference, I don't think many of us are going to claim some 3* or low 4* kid at DE that was clearly a Plan B/C guy is just as good as landing Stewart, Lightfoot, Houston, etc. I am not in sky-is-falling mode yet but being realistic, missing on Lightfoot and Stewart is concerning after only having one DE in the last class. And it appears there is not much of a fallback plan at the position currently unless there are targets we don't know about...even if we get Houston, we need at least one more and really two more given numbers.

If Houston doesn't come here, I will be quite concerned on the future of DE with the importance of position...note all of our championship caliber teams had excellent DE play. But regardless, if we miss on all of Lightfoot, Houston and Stewart, I don't think many will be acting like ttun fans are after missing on Scott and West and now being in on some clear backup options at CB. Landing Scott and West were truly important recruiting wins in this cycle after ttun expended so much time and resources on them thinking they would prevail.

Thats all true but the rankings are decieving. I notice that those rankings change so much to fit the people ranking that I don't pay all that much attention to them except that most of our guys are 4star and up. That means that they have enough athleticism to beat most of the people in their class 1on1 so if our coaches do their jobs, they'll be really good in college. When we shoot and miss more often than not, it is disconcerting but if we start missing and signing 2 and 3stars then I'm going to start worrying.

Recruiting is an imperfect science to be sure. But with several reputable sites not named ESPN doing the rankings and a composite, I think it's got more reliable. The top recruiting classes in recent years have mostly been Bama, UGA, Clemson and Ohio State, and those are the contenders typically...you don't need to get the #1 recruiting class every year, but you almost have to get top 5-10 to have a chance with some isolated exceptions.

That said, I put more stock into who the staff makes a priority for OSU. For example, Kye Stokes was a 3* that looks super promising and we didn't think twice about him until we saw glimpses into his talent in the spring game. Lots of examples, but it's usually fairly easy to tell the 3* guys the staff identified talent really on, versus the 3* taken after the priority prospects went somewhere else. Ttun fails to recognize the distinction and believes every replacement guy they get will overachieve like guys in the past two years.

Gotcha RB. Determining whether the kid has overachieved at the HS level (reached his potential early), or identifying the potential of somone 'good, but not great' is a very inexact science. tOSU has indeed groomed/trained/identified 3*s that develop into NFL first rounders. Yet one looks at an Iowa, who rarely land more than two 4*s a year, and they put a fair amount of players into the league. As many as tOSU, certainly not. Someone said it well, to make a great cake, one must have great ingredients. That is becoming more of a truism than ever. Cannot see into the future, and what it holds, but gotta go with the best you got, to achieve one's goals. The Buckeyes will always put a good product on the field, and sometimes the dice roll the right way, Jupiter will align with Mars, and things turn out the way this rabid fan base wishes. We all live for that. Go Bucks, always and evermore.
