tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Well, July is turning out quite a bit different than expected with several misses. I'm still confident on Scott but if that turns south on us, we're going to have issues on the defensive side of this class. Still lots of big names left in Scott, Bolden, Stewart, and Houston, but we might need to sweep that list to have a championship caliber class on defense.
That's the dream scenario really so losing out on the "gravy" here isn't the end of the world. The guys mentioned above are areas of need so it will feel a lot differently if we don't get at least two of the four imo

Agree with all the above. BP stands head and shoulders above some of the other boards. Probably should give more credit to the mods. Betting they delete many of the more abusive/virulent posts before they become public. Thanks to you unsung heroes. As far as to the 'why' of recruiting, the mental masturbation can cover many aspects of a 17-18 year old kid listening to the blandishments of assistant coaches/head coaches, and now the 'masters' of the NIL grab bags. Who in our group could look forward 10 or 20 years to figure out the best path to take? Certainly not me. Instant gratification is what NIL brings to the table, and every kid still believes they are going to the NFL and earn $20m per year doing what they love. tOSU can do everything right, and still lose a recruit that was a 'lock'. Not certain who above said it, that's why they pay the assistant coaches the big bucks. Would opine that the portal is brought up....as in 'well, if you come here, I can guarantee that you'll get great training/teaching, and if for whatever reason it doesn't work out, you can catch on with another great program and be a star there." Paraphrase it anyway you choose. Anyway, would love to hear from a coach/team that they conducted an exit interview with a kid that chose X program, as to why they didn't come to our U. Might be a hoot. Go Bucks! Stay the course, and true to tOSU's path.

My question is, say OSU loses out on Scott. But its because he wanted to be a part of scUM, and embracing his role as a villain or not wanting to attend school in state. Is that loss, along with losing Lightfoot to Miami because OSU was outbid, or KVA choosing ND because of his OSU not being able to recruit? I don't see those as examples of OSU not being able to recruit, but recruits choosing other programs for whatever reason. Though I know many in the fan bases will be quick to get their torches out for Knowles and company just like many did last year for LJsr. But if a kid picks another school for his own reasons, I don't see how that reflects on the coaches recruiting prowess.

It comes down to the "once is a coincidence, twice is a trend" tipping point for each person.

At what point do you stop saying it's just a series of noncorrelated events and at what point do you ask why all these seemingly noncorrelated events keep happening? Everyone is going to have their own personal landing spot on that spectrum.

Again, unless OSU loses one the numbers are pretty good. This kid would have been nice, but this was not nuclear.

Losing out on Scott would sting more, because we need those kids.

Definitely not nuclear at all, we didn't need KVA but he sure would have been nice in this class. Now I think we just stick with Pierce and Stover and call it a day at LB, which is fine in our scheme with the recent commits in the past two classes.

I am just a little concerned on the rest of the defensive class outside of KVA. Scott I am about positive on to join West to make a great base CB unit in this class. But if Scott doesn't join, you are 100% correct that it would be a much bigger loss than KVA. We are doubling down on Bolden it seems...I hate the term "must get" but he is close to it with how hard we are pursuing with seemingly no Door #2 behind him. Gotta win that very tough and seemingly uphill battle.

But DL is really the crux of the issue. Obviously Scott is a huge boon to the DL and quite unexpected. Hopefully he is in recruiter mode for us and can help seal the deal with Stewart and Houston...those 3 guys will alleviate concerns on the DL, we can fill in any gaps after that and sleep easy. Hopefully we stay on track with Scott, Stewart and Houston, those are the priorities imo (Bolden too probably with how hard we have gone after him)

We have the biggest fanbase in the country. It's going to have it's share of emotional cripples/idiots. They will all have access to the internet. Worrying about them making fools of themselves, or that it somehow reflects on others, is silly to me.

A grown up conversation could be had about defense, defensive recruiting and individual wins/losses on the recruiting trail, regardless of the ever present band of noisy children. Depending on how things continue to go, it's going to come up. It isn't like Knowles, or any part of the team he's responsible for, have been covering themselves in glory the past couple of years.
Double down on that first paragraph, who cares about the emotionally irrational minority with a keyboard? I rarely look at Twitter for this very reason and just come here.

As to the second point, agreed completely. We can discuss the defensive issues on the field and how it reflects on our recruiting (or just our defensive recruiting prowess in general). On the DL, Scott was an incredible get thanks to LJ. But of course you know other teams are trumpeting his impending retirement/scale-back with his age...can't blame them for playing that card, but it is going to get worse if we do not have a clear transition plan for recruits. LJ is the man in recruiting and development of players, but if we keep ignoring his age and longevity, I think that will hurt us more than we are accounting for.

On the back 7, I think we have mostly done well. West, Lockhart and McClain (and hopefully Scott soon) is a great base, as is Pierce and Stover at LB. Mathews, CSH, Hartford, Bonsu and Hawkins was a great DB class last year, though only landing Reese at LB was not ideal. I think the number for LB in this class was 3, but only if it was the right 3 guys...with KVA out, I don't think we have a guy on the radar that is a take to round that out. At DL, we seem to be (and should be) throwing the kitchen sink at Stewart and Houston...we have plenty of recent success at DE and I would imagine the NIL money is going to be thrown that way pretty hard. I hate to say it, but I think we really need both in this class unless we have a great backup plan.

Point is that the defensive recruiting is not in dire conditions yet, but we need some big wins in the next month with the aforementioned recruits.

Why are we talking about losing Scott? Did I miss something?
We should win that one. Not landing KVA just exacerbates concerns on defensive recruiting...there is perceived recruiting momentum and whether real or not, you start to get nervous on guys that seem like a lock to end up in Columbus. With that out of the way, KVA will have zero impact on Scott's decision, which appears to be already made.

I think as a fan with blinders on for OSU. You are trying to compare our class to other elites. We see the wins and losses for OSU. However say comparison to UGA we are only paying attention to who they get not who they miss out on. That's my perception for my Karen approach any way.

I think recruiting will never be as dire as fans think with the Portal being in existence. And it's hard to think of both scenarios for many. Especially if guys like Igbinosun, Carter, Simmons excel. No one will worry AT ALL about the recruits OSU missed at CB, S or OT if those 3 perform well. For example, losing KVA, but then getting a former 2yr starter at a school like Memphis, or San Jose St who put up good numbers already in a college system doesn't look like a loss anymore. This is the new frontier.

The portal definitely helps lessen the blow of recruiting losses if done properly. Obviously the ideal approach is recruit elite top 5 classes every year, then use the portal for departures that result from elite classes stacked up. But if you have some misses at positions of need, guys like you mentioned could be God sends and fill the gap.

Just don't want to lean on the portal for recruiting shortcomings, but the staff is most certainly not doing that. They're just human and 'crootin happens. We just need a banner year at DE though, we can't rely on the portal for that position.

Day and co have 4 jobs and they are paid handsomely to do all 4

1 dont lose elite in state talent (especially to ttun)
2 beat ttun
3 win B1G
4 win Natty

someone remind me where he stands so far in his tenure?

EDIT - if this needs moved I get it, Just a little concerned with the trends I am seeing but then again Ill always be a little sensitive having lived the Cooper years up close and in color.

I’m going to go ahead and mention the portal recruiting this year, because make no mistake, it’s absolutely part of recruiting now. To me, I give the staff an A or A- for the portal this year.

Defensive recruiting absolutely needs to get better but the OT from SoCal is #1 priority for me then Bolden, then the D Line guys, then Scott.

If Scott wants to be a villain then I am glad he won’t be in a Buckeye uniform.

#1 we are good...Marshall is the only one we wanted and lost to ttun in Day's tenure as HC if I recall correctly. The rest is a no..
.painfully close every time, but hopefully that gets remedied this year. Recruiting may slow down if we don't take care of 2-4 on your list. It'll happen, just hoping for instant gratification on your list.

It's painful, but I believe he is trying, and growing. He may well be on the Kirby Smart trajectory. The first couple were rough ones for Smart.
