2018 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Pure speculation, but it seems like Penn State may have given Tyreke Smith a little cold shoulder treatment on his official visit and is going all in (using that as evidence, I assume) with Oweh as their “#1 guy.”

It's hard for me to agree with that. It only works to the advantage of the school, not the student unless I'm missing something. Once the kid signs he is stuck but the coaching staff and/or university can do what they want. Coach gets fired or takes another job? Sucks to be you. I know those things can happen later too, but the earlier you make them sign, the more time there is for something to happen that would make the kid regret his choice. The coaches want them to sign because it makes their job easier. I understand the argument but I just can't get on board with it.

this is why i tended to agree... the coaches can still do whatever... but really they can do that at any time..

With the Early Signing Period less than a week away, here is where Ohio State's recruiting class currently stands. The Buckeyes still have the #1 recruiting class in the country and the class of 2018 might end up being the highest-rated ever. If you still want to count Emory Jones (see below), Ohio State's class is up to 21 commitments, with five of them coming since my last update. One of those commitments was long expected (WR Kamryn Babb); two were mildly surprising (DT Antwuan Jackson and DT Tommy Togiai); and two came completely out of left field (DB Tyreke Johnson and QB Matthew Baldwin). The Buckeyes are still in good position to land five-star OT Jackson Carman and four-star DE Tyreke Smith, and are seemingly back in the race for four-star DE Andrew Chatfield (official visit this weekend). The staff is also making a late push for four-star DL Tyler Friday, who was long thought to be a heavy Michigan lean.

The Buckeyes have also have their fair share of bad news. Five-star defensive end Brenton Cox formally decommitted and will likely sign with Georgia. Four-star quarterback Emory Jones has has done everything to decommit except send out the "Dear Buckeye Nation" tweet, and the Buckeye staff decided to add rising star Matthew Baldwin to the class in the likely event that Jones ends up elsewhere. A pair of uncommitted five-star prospects who formerly favored Ohio State - DB Anthony Cook and DE Micah Parsons - have virtually disappeared from the radar.

As always, expect some late movement as recruits receive last minute offers to fill slots opened up by decommitments or early departures from the program (NFL, injury, transfer).

Bama seems to be taking an interesting approach to the early signing period. Their highest ranking commit is rated #64 in the nation, and yet per Scout they are in on 13 players rated #58 or higher (including Jones).

Hard to believe some of those kids haven't given a nuncupative thumbs up (sorry, been waiting a long time to use that word). I certainly don't see any advantage for the school in not having a kid sign on the 20th. Are they planning some sort of last minute ambush?

Speaking of the 25 thing...

By my quick count off the 11W class grid, after hawkins departure they would have to clear 10 spots between NFL draft and "other"

That seems like a lot
I got curious so I did some checking. I found nine names of scholarship players who 1) were not seniors, 2) did not go to the NFL, 3) were on the roster at the end of last season and 4) were not on the roster at the beginning of this season. That is over 10% of the team.

If we end up with any two of Smith, Oweh, Chatfield or Friday I’ll consider it a home run. Doesn’t really matter which ones we get as they all have insane potential. If penn state wants to push smith our way it gets us halfway there.

Yes, but you generally have an idea on which coaches could leave. Especially as most of the assistant spots have already been filled in this years coaching round table. Up until the Tennessee fiasco if a Corner prospect decided to wait it out another 5 weeks to sign. After that our coaching staff seems to be in place for next year. Would be surprised if any of them were poached.

You have a general idea about the sexiest 2-5 assistant coaches being courted by many, all of which lie profusely until they get the new job (kind of hard to avoid this).

They have little to no idea about guys making horizontal moves, like when OSU's RB coach bolts right after signing day. That kind of thing happens all of the time.

All of which is a very specific focus in the general realm where kids have almost no power or flexibility. A select few can game the system. Nearly everyone else is at the mercy of being dropped or screwed by your coach cheating on you with another prospect or school.

Yeah basically. If the coaching staff is stable see Ohio State/Bama/Clemson types the only reason for not signing early is signalling to the coach you are still looking around.

Also as far as Emory goes I think the further we get from Baldwin's commit and he doesn't decommit the less likely he decommites. That doesn't mean he doesn't but if he was looking to truly decommit the Baldwin thing gave him all the chance in the world to justify it and both sides have a good ending.

Jones has been pretty quiet except for some "welcome!" Tweets to Buckeye commits. Make of that what you will.
