I am shocked Knox and Burrell have not progressed to the point where they were more competitive and we had to bring in Pridgeon. I thought Burrell would be a stud. Not sure what is going on there.

I think not having Warriner working with the Oline like he used to is really hurting this area. I am not sold on Studs at this point. Knox looked totally unprepared for the game. I don't know if more OL recruits fixes this or not.

I've been wondering the same thing. Stud was good at LSU, but Warinner was even better here, IMO. Doesn't make sense that it feels like we've missed an entire OL class, but it feels exactly like that when you look at the overall production by that unit. I remember the days Tressel used to be able to sub in the entire second OL unit and not miss a beat. Nowadays we're lucky to come up with a consistent, dominating first unit. When Jordan went out last night you could see the immediate dropoff in skill level. It was nothing short of startling. I stand behind these players because they're competing at a level I could only dream of. They've dedicated the next four to five years of their young lives to this program. Now our coaches need to show them the same commitment and get somebody in there to develop them the way they deserve.

Either that or have the 'talk' with them. Not something that Buckeye Nation is used to, but is more prevalent that you'd think. I refer you to Phil Steele's web site, and on the left is Injuries & Transfers. Click on it. Gives the numbers, names, and destinations of injuries and transfers from the school (alpha order). Bama has 11 in that category. tOSU has two. (also has dismissals). Anyway, if you can stockpile an OC, to insert when the current OC 's shelf life has expired, why cannot you do it with players who don't develop as anticipated? Not the B10 way? Look no further than the school up north to see what khaki pants is doing........

I guess the message is that if you want to compete with the Satan's of college football, you've gotta play by the same rules. Urb is loyal to his friends, maybe as much as Tress was. When it works, it is great. When it doesn't, well.......one has to suck it up and make the hard decision. Seem to remember when Warinner was put in the press box calling the O plays last year, he was a hero. Against Clemson, not so much. At BG and Utah, wasn't Urb directly in charge of QBs? Thought so, but ? If he isn't seeing the play out of the QB, then you either recruit better players, or get coaches that can squeeze great performances out of them. Buckeye Nation is reacting viscerally (really? woulda never thought that :wink: ). Ultimately Urb is in charge of the performance of the Buckeye football team, and gets the lashings that ensue when hiccups happen. I believe that he'll correct the issue in his own way, and I hope he doesn't bring in 'one-n-done' coaches (Chip Kelley comes to mind). Would hate to see a knee-jerk reaction. Anyway, other than the Clemson game, have a great New Year.....Go Bucks!

If you have read any quotes, he criticized Miles because he wouldn't let Stud modernized the offense that it would get him fired, which it did. Unlike Beck when you look at Stud who was O-line and OC for a time down there the stats dont back it up. The Line was good most of the time down there.

I went to school down south and have a lot of friends who are LSU fans, and they were universally and extremely critical of the OL coaching throughout Stud's tenure.
On the contrary, they never really complained about his work as OC, since that was widely known to be hampered by Miles.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. Honestly, Stud could be a fantastic OL coach who was limited by scheme/youth/whatever at LSU and in his first season here, but let's not try and pretend that the LSU OL was a strength. I won't claim to have done the statistical research on LSU OL play, but the word of multiple diehard LSU fans holds some weight for me.

not a terrible OL coach, but also nothing special.

i don't know how much of it was our antiquated offense though. there are rumors out there that our Line didn't even watch game film of upcoming opponents because we was just lining up and punching them in the mouth no matter what the d did.

he had no business being OC, but in his defense was thrown in there at the last minute when Kragthorpe came down with Parkinson's.

I apologize for now knowing where to put this, but the general discussion thread seemed to be the best fit.

I work with a TTUN alum who brought up the fact that he loves Urban turning OSU recruiting into a national focus instead of locking down the Ohio kids. For him, he loves picking up Ohio kids who have a chip on their shoulder that Ohio State didn't offer or pursue as hard because they were trying to pull the 4/5* out of FL/TX/GA. Now, the Urban approach is working extremely well so far, but what happens when Urban hangs them up? Although TTUN alum believes it will absolutely happen in the next 3 years with the ascendancy of Harbaugh, which I find laughable, it is a good question to ponder for when it inevitably does happen. Can the next OSU head coach, whenever that might occur, continue on this torrid national brand building recruiting? A similar question faces Alabama with Saban, but I think there is less uncertainty about how long Saban wants to coach than with Urban. Yes, Urban seems happier, but the look he had after this past clusterbowl brought to mind old Florida Urban.

All that to say, I know on this board we joke about Ohio kids having special powers, but there's something to be said for being the premier state school in a high school hotbed of recruiting. If we don't focus on Ohio, don't continue to maintain and build relationships with head coaches in high schools in the state, and allow little chinks in the fence to become larger, then it will take longer than a couple of recruiting cycles to plug them back up.

I don't think we've been ignoring Ohio by any stretch, but it was an interesting conversation point that I hadn't really been focusing on since the past couple of classes have been insane and 2018 is looking to be a good one as well. Just brought it up since all of the negativity after the clusterbowl jogged this train of thought as well.

As an aside, TTUN alum and I made a bet on the outcome of The Game, and he will proudly have to display a Zeke OSU jersey in his office for the next 6 months.

ETA: Yeah, I hadn't really looked at the numbers, so that puts me at ease. I was thinking about Honigford in particular. But you're right, sky isn't falling, just something that was rattling around in all of the negativity in my mind after that game.

^It is an interesting discussion but unlike Cooper, Meyer hasn't burned any bridges with Ohio HS coaches as far as I'm aware. As long as his successor respects Ohio football, I'm not worried about our sway in Ohio. If the next guy wants to make Ohio recruiting a priority, I don't foresee much resistance as long as Urban leaves the program in a good state

Michigan has 2 commits for 2017 from Ohio...both OL...James Hudson and Joel Honigford. I was a proponent of OSU offering Honigford. OSU has 5 commits from Ohio in Amir Riep, Brendon White, Jerron Cage, Marcus Williamson and Josh Myers.

Michigan didn't take a single Ohio kid in 2016. OSU took Malik Harrison, Gavin Cupp, Luke Farrell, Jack Wohlabaugh, DeMario McCall, Jake Hausmann, Jonathon Cooper, Kierre Hawkins, Tyler Gerald and Drue Chrisman. That's 10 kids.

Michigan took 3 Ohio kids in 2015...DB Tyree Kinnel, K Andrew David and OL Nolan Ulizo. None of them were OSU caliber, IMO. OSU took DaVon Hamilton, Robert Landers, Rashod Berry, Jerome Baker, Alex Stump, Justin Hilliard, Denzel Ward, Dre'Mont Jones, Nick Conner, Liam McCullough, Joe Burrow and Eric Glover-Williams. That's 12 kids.

I understand your point but it's not like Michigan is building a program full of Ohio kids with chips on their shoulders. And 2017 seems to have been a bit of a down year in Ohio.

For 2018 OSU has already offered Jackson Carman, Jaelen Gill, Leonard Taylor, Dallas Gant, Blue Smith, Chris Oats and Aeneas Hawkins. And they are in contact with the likes of Tyreke Smith, Trenton Gillison, Joseph Scates, Blaine Scott, Alex Riegelsperger and Antwuan Johnson. I'd expect close to double digit Ohio kids in the class.
