tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Michigan has 2 commits for 2017 from Ohio...both OL...James Hudson and Joel Honigford. I was a proponent of OSU offering Honigford. OSU has 5 commits from Ohio in Amir Riep, Brendon White, Jerron Cage, Marcus Williamson and Josh Myers.

Michigan didn't take a single Ohio kid in 2016. OSU took Malik Harrison, Gavin Cupp, Luke Farrell, Jack Wohlabaugh, DeMario McCall, Jake Hausmann, Jonathon Cooper, Kierre Hawkins, Tyler Gerald and Drue Chrisman. That's 10 kids.

Michigan took 3 Ohio kids in 2015...DB Tyree Kinnel, K Andrew David and OL Nolan Ulizo. None of them were OSU caliber, IMO. OSU took DaVon Hamilton, Robert Landers, Rashod Berry, Jerome Baker, Alex Stump, Justin Hilliard, Denzel Ward, Dre'Mont Jones, Nick Conner, Liam McCullough, Joe Burrow and Eric Glover-Williams. That's 12 kids.

I understand your point but it's not like Michigan is building a program full of Ohio kids with chips on their shoulders. And 2017 seems to have been a bit of a down year in Ohio.

For 2018 OSU has already offered Jackson Carman, Jaelen Gill, Leonard Taylor, Dallas Gant, Blue Smith, Chris Oats and Aeneas Hawkins. And they are in contact with the likes of Tyreke Smith, Trenton Gillison, Joseph Scates, Blaine Scott, Alex Riegelsperger and Antwuan Johnson. I'd expect close to double digit Ohio kids in the class.

Post of the year, thus far

I apologize for now knowing where to put this, but the general discussion thread seemed to be the best fit.

I work with a TTUN alum who brought up the fact that he loves Urban turning OSU recruiting into a national focus instead of locking down the Ohio kids. For him, he loves picking up Ohio kids who have a chip on their shoulder that Ohio State didn't offer or pursue as hard because they were trying to pull the 4/5* out of FL/TX/GA. Now, the Urban approach is working extremely well so far, but what happens when Urban hangs them up? Although TTUN alum believes it will absolutely happen in the next 3 years with the ascendancy of Harbaugh, which I find laughable, it is a good question to ponder for when it inevitably does happen. Can the next OSU head coach, whenever that might occur, continue on this torrid national brand building recruiting? A similar question faces Alabama with Saban, but I think there is less uncertainty about how long Saban wants to coach than with Urban. Yes, Urban seems happier, but the look he had after this past clusterbowl brought to mind old Florida Urban.

All that to say, I know on this board we joke about Ohio kids having special powers, but there's something to be said for being the premier state school in a high school hotbed of recruiting. If we don't focus on Ohio, don't continue to maintain and build relationships with head coaches in high schools in the state, and allow little chinks in the fence to become larger, then it will take longer than a couple of recruiting cycles to plug them back up.

I don't think we've been ignoring Ohio by any stretch, but it was an interesting conversation point that I hadn't really been focusing on since the past couple of classes have been insane and 2018 is looking to be a good one as well. Just brought it up since all of the negativity after the clusterbowl jogged this train of thought as well.

As an aside, TTUN alum and I made a bet on the outcome of The Game, and he will proudly have to display a Zeke OSU jersey in his office for the next 6 months.

ETA: Yeah, I hadn't really looked at the numbers, so that puts me at ease. I was thinking about Honigford in particular. But you're right, sky isn't falling, just something that was rattling around in all of the negativity in my mind after that game.
scUM has never signed an Ohio player with an Ohio State offer in Urban's tenure.

Dymonte Thomas

But I agree with the general point you're making

If Ohio State could rescind that offer, I'm sure they would. Dymonte has been nothing beyond mediocre. Maybe it has to do with scUM player development. Jabrill Peppers would be the first example (not of an Ohio player but of a player who turns in to a trash bag.)

Fair enough.

Anyways, any ideas on what effect letting Beck loose might have on our Texas recruiting?

Had forgotten about him.

I know we would've taken Peppers and Gary in a heartbeat, so I am not talking about them here. But I think evaluation has to do with it too. How many times has Urban turned down highly rated players who went to scUM and flopped? Green, that other one-time-top RB from 2016 class, just to name two out of the top of my head. I know Green's evaluation had to be done by Hoke, but the 2016 RB was on Hairball.

First of all, this is a thoughtful post and honestly a very good discussion piece. Please keep posting and follow the recruiting threads :)

That being said, we have nailed the talent we truly we want in-state under UFM and quite frankly, much better than we did under Tressel. We lost a ton of Cincy and Toledo recruits in particular under JT...I could look back and research it, but the list would go on. Your friend noticed a ton of Ohio players on the roster that they had to wait 3-5 years until they finally produced for the most part (excluding Butt). While we have taken on a more national focus, we have locked down Ohio when we need to. However, Ohio is a big and talent-rich state, so there will always be the "I told you so" type players that try to haunt us when they play us.

THE HURRY UP: JANUARY CONTACT PERIOD OFFERS SECOND CHANCE FOR TWO OF OHIO'S TOP UNCOMMITTED PROSPECTS

78923_h.jpg,qitok=G5vvi9Qt.pagespeed.ce.dmxVJKb3eC.jpg

The Hurry Up is your nightly dose of updates from the Ohio State football recruiting trail, keeping tabs on the latest from commits and targets from around the country.

SO YOU'RE SAYING THERE'S A CHANCE

When I first wrote about Warren G. Harding athlete Lynn Bowden roughly two months ago, I broached the subject of why he had not yet received a scholarship offer from Ohio State. But all possible reasons aside, the Buckeyes were simply not recruiting him at that point in time.

That may change here soon, though, as a source close to the program tells Eleven Warriors the staff will reevaluate Bowden when the recruiting contact period opens on Jan. 12.

Ohio State would like to add five more prospects to the current class, and will find out where three of its remaining targets will end up when defensive backs Bubba Bolden, Darnay Holmes and Jeffrey Okudah announce their decisions at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl this Saturday.

Once that happens, we'll have a clearer look at how the class may fill out.

Defensive tackles Marvin Wilson and Jay Tufele will make their decisions known on National Signing Day, while announcements from wide receiver Jaylen Harris and cornerback Kendall Sheffield are still up in the air.

So let's say, for example, the Buckeyes only lock down commitments from Okudah and Harris at the very minimum. Who fills out the rest of the class?

That's where Bowden and four-star offensive tackle Thayer Munford come in to play. Neither have an offer, but both have called Ohio State their dream school at one point or another.

Entire article: http://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-...-period-thayer-munford-lynn-bowden-ohio-state

Probably a decent summary of where Ohio State stands in recruiting.

I thought I would move the convo from Sheffield to this thread. Can we get a guesstimate on how many we are going to take now?

I am thinking maybe there are some guys like Stump, maybe others that are going to transfer and open more spots? How many of those were accounted for, I am too lazy to go back and look?

Edit - Ok so I went back and looked and now I am more confused as to how many we are going to take.
