Looking Forward: Buckeye Running Backs in 2017 and Beyond

MikeWeberNU.jpg

For as long as Ohio State football and the NFL have been around together, the Buckeyes have been populating the league with running backs at a pretty significant rate. From the likes of Robert Smith and Archie Griffin to Eddie George and Carlos Hyde, to the most recent in Ezekiel Elliott, the Buckeyes continue to churn out running backs to the NFL.

It all starts with recruiting the right athlete to play for your college, and Urban Meyer is doing a fantastic job of finding the right guys to fit into his system. Before he came to Ohio State to coach he had never had a back gain over 1,000 yards in a season, and with Mike Weber going over that mark this season, he now has four straight.

There doesn't appear to be any let up in sight, so with that in mind, let's take a look at recruiting at the running back position for the next couple of years and see what the Buckeyes might look like.

Dontre Wilson is the only senior back on the roster this year, though depending on how Curtis Samuel feels about his draft stock, he could opt to bolt for the NFL. After those two, the Buckeyes are pretty light in the running back position with only three scholarship tailbacks remaining on the roster if Samuel goes pro.

The Buckeyes have one running back currently committed in J.K. Dobbins (5-10 201) out of La Grange, Texas. Dobbins is a 4-star back who has been out of action this season after he sustained an injury in his team’s first play from scrimmage this season. While he remains committed to the Buckeyes, there had been some concern that depending on who was brought in to coach the Texas Longhorns, that he would possibly consider them.

Tom Herman was announced as the head coach, and made an effort to try and sway Dobbins back to the in-state Longhorns, but it appears he will be sticking with the Buckeyes. When the Buckeyes were talking about taking a second back in this class, Dobbins told reporters that that would cause him to probably look around as he wanted to be the only back in the class. As of right now it appears that the Buckeyes will sign only one in this class.

Looking Forward: Buckeye Quarterbacks in 2017 and Beyond

JoeBurrowCheckIn.jpg

he Buckeyes have been graced with great quarterback play almost since Urban Meyer took over the team in 2012. From Braxton Miller to J.T. Barrett to Cardale Jones and back to Barrett, the Buckeyes have gone 61-5 under Meyer due in large part to suburb quarterback play.

Given the successes of the past, it would follow that there will be successes in the future. With that in mind, let's take a look at recruiting at the quarterback position for the next couple of years for Ohio State and see how the Buckeyes look at the most important position in sports.

After this season, there is thought that J.T. Barrett might be departing Columbus for the NFL — leaving Ohio State with a lot of inexperience at the position. If he goes, the projected starter would probably be Joey Burrow. However, if he stays, the rest of the guys behind him will get another year to watch and learn from one of Ohio State's all-time greats.

Redshirt sophomore Stephen Collier was injured before the season and has played sparingly over the past two years, and true freshman Dwayne Haskins is redshirting this season.

The 2017 depth chart could look a lot different than it does below if Barrett does decide to depart. At one time the Buckeyes had two quarterbacks committed for the 2017 class in Danny Clark and Tate Martell.

Clark decided that the best option for him was to decommit and find another school where he would have a better chance at success. Clark ended up committing to Kentucky in October.

Martell, who was committed at one point to Washington and then Texas A&M, seems to have finally settled on Ohio State and should be the only quarterback taken in the class of 2017.

The roster has -9 openings right now. They seem likely to add at least 3.

2-4 RS Juniors - not renewed
4-7 NFL departures
-----------------------
6-11 moving on
+1-2 Unexpected attrition (like Gibson)
------
7-13 scholarships

I'm confused where the 9 openings come from. From my count there are 82 scholarship players (3 open) and four seniors for a total of 7.

Also,when you say they are likely to add at least three what do you mean?

Put Price and Elflein in the 3* to fame tOSU club. Pat (for sure), Billy (I believe) are another in the group of lower ranked recruits that tOSU successfully taught, nurtured, and gave a chance to, and they did not disappoint. A kid may have matured early, made the most of his physique early, with no room to grow, or ? to become a 5* who didn't show out well at the Div I level. Maybe, or maybe heart, desire, willingness to work harder than ever have, girls, beer, weed, (insert other reasons here). Someone very wise said you cannot evaluate a player until year two or three of their enrollment, as to whether or not they can contribute at the required level. I believe it, but also trust the coaches look at more than press clippings to see whether a young man is 'projected' to be more than he is. Not sure why I posted something we all know (having been Planet readers for many a moon), but what else could a young man like Billy Price say? I outworked all the hotsy-totsy 5*s, outgutted them, and out-hearted them? <= what I believe the real truth to be.....

Anyway, we thank those that rose to the top and are Buckeyes. Go Bucks

That's an insane amount of future Buckeyes being nominated for end of season awards!

You also need to include the early departures, so there should be plenty of room.

With the playoff pushing games back to after the start of the next semester it gets interesting, but I would like to think the NCAA has accounted for that and wont say a kid can't play without being enrolled.

Yeah I think there shouldn't be any problem getting to 21-22. I was just confused by the starting number but I see now he was saying -9 and not 9 open ships. Makes more sense now.

As see the numbers as:

17 current commits with 4-5 more for a total of 22;

4 Seniors;

4 open scholarships;

5-7 early entries;

1-3 medicals;

1-3 guys that transfer/leave the team (non-grade/disciple issues);

2-3 fifth years that don't come back; and

1-3 guys with grade/discipline issues.

14 Ships isn't that many to open up.

So, all signs point to Okudah and Holmes on Jan 7th. Should shut down the DB class. Then Wilson and Harris on signing day. Puts us at 21. Most likely way I see it different is if they want 1 more OL over 1 more WR and go after a guy like Munford. If Holmes stays in Cali, then it's easy.
