tOSU Recruiting Discussion

5 stars - none

4 stars, in order from highest scout ranking to lowest (number is their overall ranking)

52 (ovr) WR Gibson - redshirted, off-field issues, likely gone
63 LB Hilliard - injured, must seize role this offseason before Jones, Browning take off
69 RB Weber - starter, very solid
74 OT Prince - starter, struggling
139 LB Baker - stud, off to NFL after next year
140 DB EGW - special teams
168 OL Burrell - backup, can he hold off incoming talent?
171 DB Ward - 3rd corner, #1 next fall
178 QB Burrow - #2 QB, will he hold off Haskins?
184 WR Stump - backup, can he get healthy?
191 DT Cornell - backup, can he get healthy?
220 DT Jones - starter, very promising
229 WR Hill - quality backup WR, should push for time in 2017
NR LB Conner - rumors of a transfer upcoming
NR DT Landers - quality role player at DT

3-stars: Berry, Hamilton, Alabi, Bowen, Feder, Norwood, Alexander, Arnette, McCullough

This offseason will define this class. Hilliard, EGW, Burrell, Burrell, Cornell will have some major competition this offseason to secure a role moving forward. There's a ton of talent here already or incoming that will threaten to bury them. They have the talent, the time is now to grab their spot.
There are 8 verbals in the 2017 class ranked higher than this entire class, and that's without counting Okudah (which you should) or others.

There are 13 (+ Okudah) ranked higher than Jerome Baker, who was the 4th highest rated recruit.

So what you're saying is...

This (young) team is already really, really good. Yet, this team is going to be really, really, really, really, REALLY good?

The big question is, not only for the '15 class, but the current roster, who is going Pro, who is transferring, who is a medical casualty, and who simply uses up their eligibility? We have discussed in other threads the number of scholarships that are available which sit around 6, with an additional 3 that were opened up due to attrition (includes the recent departure of Gibson). That means the roster has 9 openings. With a possibility of 7-8 players declaring, that pushes openings to 15-16. I know we do not like to speculate on who moves on but if this class goes to 22 like most of us believe it means another 6-7 players are transitioning. I see two on jwinslow's list that are on my mine.

The roster has -9 openings right now. They seem likely to add at least 3.

2-4 RS Juniors - not renewed
4-7 NFL departures
-----------------------
6-11 moving on
+1-2 Unexpected attrition (like Gibson)
------
7-13 scholarships

Then you toss in a handful of backup OL, WR and other positions that move on because they're buried (or have a tough chat with the coaches), and it's pretty easy to get to a total of 12-13 departures. Initially it seemed like they'd have to clear out a ton of backups to make this work. I see it being a smaller number of required processing, though more may happen naturally.

If it does not happen now, there will be another waive of attrition to make room for the 2018 class. A lot of that will happen naturally as there's a ton of talent that won't be content to be a backup (like the loser of the Burrow/Haskins competition to replace JT), or the guys who are strictly special teamers from the suddenly loaded DB corps (in 2018).

Yup, and the incredible 2013 class yielded some ridiculous talent. The pretty good but dwarfed 2014 class did as well.

2015 was definitely down on paper (and by down, I mean really good but not outrageous like many Urban classes). It had the volume to make up for it, but it wasn't similar to 2013, 2014 or 2017. The 2016 class wasn't that different from 2015 overall except for the top, where there was a Bosa and a 5-star OT (both of which are giant differences).

Gibson could have been a stud for us. Unfortunate. I remember when Hilliard and Cornell committed in what we dubbed as a 10-star day but they never seemed to show consistent improvement in high school and their progression has been stagnant in Columbus. At this point, I wonder if they'll ever contribute. It's really disappointing to think about how little of an impact this class will end up having.

Gibson was having a transition between positions. I watched Hilliard in multiple games his senior year, and teams literally ran a way from him, he affected games that much where OCs game planned for him. He's been injured his whole time in college, not his fault. That's just the breaks. And Cornell is also adjusting to a new position, but hasn't gotten big enough to hold down the middle in this defense. He may still be productive

A ScUM and MSU fan at my gym think that Urban will soon run out of talent and leave OSU, for either ND or just retire. They seem to think that the gap of talent in the B1G is getting smaller by the year:lol:... I just told him check out the gap in recruiting classes between OSU and everyone else.
They also think that Harbaugh will either win or be in multiple NCs. At that point I had to exit the conversation because the delusion was too much to bear

Show him just how our recruiting is "running out of talent".

2017: #2 (17) (currently the highest star/rating average per commit, and the most 5-stars at 6)
2016: #4 (25)
2015: #7 (26)
2014: #3 (31)
2013: #2 (29)

The number of commits per class has been steadily declining each year while the quality per commit has been improving. I left out the 2012 class because he had only a few months with which to work. Classes from 2013 onward are all his.

Number of current 5-star commits per school from 247:

Ohio State: 6
Alabama: 4
Clemson: 2
Auburn: 1
Georgia: 1
LSU: 1
Tennessee: 1
FSU: 1
Stanford: 1
USC: 1
UCLA: 1

We have more 5-stars than all the SEC schools not named Alabama combined (4). We also have as many 5-stars as all of the ACC (3) and the PAC 12 (3) combined (6).

I tried, but rational thinking was going over their heads. They feel like the entire B1G will be so good in the near future where there's too much parity for OSU to dominate, and once Hairball gets his guys, were screwed. Smh
These are also 2 guys who argued with me that the Jordan brand would revolutionalize recruiting, as every kid would lose their mind to wear Jordan's... Their humorous delusion is interesting I'm between sets, and then it gets to be too much
