tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Nothing could have powered recruiting this cycle better than the 2016 NFL Draft; having rookie Buckeyes in contention for DROY, OROY, and MVP #developedhere. 5* kids want to get to the NFL and be stars. Nobody can sell that better on the recruiting trail than this coaching staff right now. Not even Bama.

This 100%. Not only did we own the draft, but we proved it was deserving...all of Elliott, Bosa, Thomas and Bell (just off the top of my head) are absolutely dominating in their rookie seasons right now. If you are a recruit, why not get in line and get your big paycheck on Draft Day?

I'm sure this has been noted somewhere but using the 247 Composite rankings, the average player rating of the OSU class is 96.11.

By comparison, the entire Big 10 currently has two players committed that exceed that: DE AJ Epenesa (committed to Iowa) and QB Dylan McCaffrey (committed to Michigan).

Obviously there will likely be some more such as Cesar Ruiz, Donovan Peoples-Jones, Aubrey Solomon, Drew Singleton and Isaiah Wilson (all could land at Michigan), Josh Kaindoh (could land at PSU but FSU is making a big push with him) and Lamont Wade (still a PSU lean I think), Jeff Thomas (Illinois/Mizzou battle), etc. But that is just amazing.

The gap widens.

Not to get off topic, but Eli Apple, Darron Lee, and Taylor Decker also are starters if I'm not mistaken. That's seven of the 12 Buckeye draftees starting (at least).

I believe you're right and Decker had the highest grade on the Lions' OL as a rookie the last time I checked. There are just so many to track, very impressive and the recruits are certainly taking notice. Not only are our guys getting drafted high, but they're prepared to play right away.

If the staff can squeeze 22 spots and keep S. Wade then I'd like to see something like this for final 6 in my order of importance.

1. Cam Akers - I am sticking with my long held belief that next to the QB this is the second most important position. We wouldn't have won the '14 championship without Zeke end of story. Despite a solid year by Weber I don't see enough horses in the stable. McCall will be GREAT but is more in the Curtis Samuel role. I am very high on Dobbins and can see him doing very well but Akers just has an 'it' factor you can't ignore and his body and style of play will show up in sledgehammer games against teams built to stop the run like Bama, the Big East, Wiscy, etc. Plain and simple, you win championships with guys like this and his talent is too great to ignore. You put him to work with any of the QBs and the O Lines of the next several years (and hopefully a stud WR group)..........MERCY.

2. Trey Smith - only 2 OL's in this class plus games are won in the trenches. The turnstile at RT this year is our biggest liability heading into the playoffs. It's amazing it hasn't hurt more in the Meyer era but finally, the slim years of recruiting here is showing up. Very tempted to rank him the most important due to this. Put it this way - as nervous as I am at watching Prince in the playoffs I can't even fathom what happens if we lost anyone on the line to injury but lose someone like Jamarco? This team is likely dead in the water.

3. Jeffrey Okudah - the NFL minor league for elite DB's (aka known as tOSU's secondary unit) appears to be an escalator running on high speed and it needs CONSTANT reloading. Especially considering our current "put them on an island" philosophy. You need straight up studs and plenty of them.

4. Markquese Bell/Kendall Sheffield/Darnay Holmes - for reasons stated above I see 6 players in the secondary for this class. Also note it is possible Pryor grows into a Darron Lee type LB which leaves a class of only 5. I consider adding the 6th DB as being the 4th most important position to round out the class and these 3 names are merely my guess on most likely to get the 6th spot. Truth be told it might be a toss up on most likely between Bell and Sheffield with the experience of the latter being very important as a plug and play guy. College experience will count in a '18 championship run if the draft cleans house at tOSU. Also of note, if S. Wade were to flip to Bama I think the staff would try to fill his spot and still add another. Again, my guess is the staff would like to see 6 DBs if possible.

5. Jay Tufele/Marvin Wilson - I'm guessing Tufele is more likely of the two but with this staff, who knows. Wilson could be in tomorrow for all I know. I think the staff would like 3 DTs and you certainly don't say no to either guy because they are elite but the DT position is slightly less dire then it seemed not too long ago. Solid play by the inside guys this year coupled by great prospects in the '18 class make it a little easier to imagine ending with just 2 DTs in this cycle.

6. I COULD LITERALLY ARGUE FOR SEVERAL GUYS HERE - again, this list is my personal view of NEED. With current roster and now Browning in the fold with White I just don't see a 3rd LB as being critical but I am a big fan of Pete Werner's game. As stated above, Pryor could end up in the LB room as well making it 3 guys already. I like Pete but is he crucial? I could also be tempted to say Jaylen Harris here. Next to O Line depth/level of play I would say the WR group is right there with regards to concern. Yes there are talented guys in the room and the future appears to be bright but the WR group is still quite a bit of a question mark to me. Add in a tall WR with special Ohio powers and it sounds good to me. Lastly, I could easily see a need for a 4th OL assuming we did land Trey Smith so insert Thayer Munford. Obviously if the staff doesn't land Trey then his need moves way up the list but even with Trey I could be convinced to take Munford for the last spot.

Resident experts, can we get an update where this class is maybe going to end? Do we still think it is a 21 man class with all of the possible early NFL guys accounted for?

With Browning now in, and Wilson possible, Okudah most likely, Trey Smith also in play, how are we going to finish? Obviously no one knows the exact answer, but damn it sure looks like we have a lot of big time players appearing to be more than interested in us but we just don't look like we have the room for them all. We are going to have to turn some unreal talent away. Who is a "lock" or "must take" if they commit? Seems like there might be 8 to 10 "locks" and we can't take them all.

I posted my thoughts on page 48 of this thread....nothing has really changed my mind since then.

Just curious... who would you prefer? Wilson or Tufele?

Wilson. Tufele is a great talent, but Wilson is arguably the best prospect in the country....regardless of position.

I realize it would take an amazing run, even for this staff,to close with Smith, Wilson, Okudah, and Akers but that would put 10 in the class who are 5 stars. All of these guys are possible, some probable.

The fact that it's even in the discussion to have that much talent--along with all the 4 star recruits is simply hard to fathom.
