tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Why do you think that is though? We land all kinds of elite talent from out of state at other positions.
From a lot larger pool of talent. Look at all of the QBs and OTs that OSU has whiffed on. Same with WR, which I would argue has been more good than great.
Sweat didn't stay home.
Bah, you're right, I forgot that he got away.

yeah, hopefully sometime soon this staff can prove to everyone they know what they are doing

 If LJ Sr. was some up and comer, the jury might still be out only because he inherited great talent here at OSU. But he has a ludicrous track record of landing top talent at PSU (both at his position and in heavily recruited areas) and then developing those players into high draft picks.

Anyone who has followed OSU recruiting for anytime beyond the last 3 years knows we have struggled tremendously in getting highly-recruited talent from NJ, MD, and VA. I remember my jaw dropping when we landed Lamar Thomas from MD one year and Curtis Grant from VA in another. In the past 2-3 years:

NJ: Noah Brown, Darrius Slade (LJ Sr. personally delivered there), Kevin Feder, Kareem Walker...then sitting pretty for Guarantano and Gary
VA: Jalyn Holmes, Aramis Alexander, Matthew Burrell (again, almost all LJ Sr.)
MD: Isaiah Prince (LJ Sr came up big here, this was a dog fight)

- Let us also throw in Jashon Cornell, who was recruited HEAVILY by the entire country and LJ had that locked down asap. He is doing a great job and even if we landed Plan B types, they are still obviously OSU caliber and LJ's coaching ability will bring them to another level.

The 247 "ratings" are really just adding up all the recruits that they landed as primary recruiter or secondary recruiter and doesn't factor in difficulty. Drayton is listed as the secondary recruiter for Mike Weber (Coombs covers Detroit and was primary). The other five recruits landed by Drayton were from all from NE Ohio (mainly Cleveland) and 3 of the 5 (Stump, Ward, Berry) accepted pretty much on the spot when offered. I could recruit NE Ohio kids to Ohio State and I like to sleep a lot.

The other ratings that list Alford as a top recruiter take into account where guys are recruiting and who for. Alford going into Florida and out-recruiting Florida, Miami, Georgia, USC, etc. for a 4 star kid out of South Florida to come up to ND obviously takes a lot more effort/skill than Drayton getting Cleveland kids to commit to OSU.

Edit to add: I don't want to come off as disparaging Drayton. He had a rep as a good recruiter and did a fine job for OSU. My main point is that the way they calculate the 247 assistant coach rankings are pretty much worthless. Alford has long had the reputation of being ND's best recruiter and is responsible for some of their biggest recruiting coups over the past 7 years.

Hopefully, we see more development from LJs recruits. The jury is still out right now.
I hope you're being sarcastic. That jury made its ruling almost a decade ago.

He has one of, if not THE, best resume for developing first round D-Line talent in the country from his days in Happy Valley and he's continuing it here. That D-Line that he coached and mentored DOMINATED in the playoffs and led this team to a national championship in his FIRST year with this team... a line that had TWO All-Americans on it by the end of the year. And who knows... he may very well have himself yet another #1 overall draft pick in Joey Bosa (Courtney Brown) after next year, who came 1 sack away from the all-time OSU single season sacks record this year. If that isn't enough, what he turned Adolphus Washington into by the end of the year, beating two of the best O-lines in the country (Wiscy & Bama) play after play, was sick. He very well could have left for the NFL last month.

LJ's pedigree and results speak for itself. You're out of your gourd, Taos. Whatever you feel he still has to personally prove to you, I hope you find it, because you're not going to find a finer coach to replace him with.

I'm pretty sure the recruiting sites don't reflect a player's primary recruiter accurately 90% of the time, I'm also pretty sure multiple people on the staff interact with every recruit, so rankings based on who "they" land are meaningless.

The entire OSU staff are known for being excellent recruiters outside of Warriner and Hinton (who do just fine in their own right but aren't stars).
