tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Rules change, but my recollection is this:
The B1G used to only allow you so send out 25 LOIs on signing day to prevent the potential of having more than 25 come back signed. You had to wait until a kid declined to sign one before you could send out another. (we lost a kid back around 2002 for that very reason - somebody named Washington I believe changed his mind and the next in line had already signed) My understanding is that the 28 is an increase to that number.

But keep in mind that none of the kids who enrolled early will be signing LOIs for the 2015 academic year. We have no issues with a limit of 25. 85 is the only number we need to worry about and that rule is simply that only 85 kids on scholarship can be on the fall roster.

Also, if we sign 25 or something close to that it will limit the number of potential early enrollees from 2016.

Richard Washington bailed for NC State and we missed out on Buster Davis, who went to FSU.

Interesting, you just never know what is going to happen heading into NLOID. The last couple years we closed on some major targets in the final hour and held together our class. After missing on Gustin and losing Davis, we could be facing a stark contrast this year (fresh after a national title mind you). Still think we get Hill and I think it is 50/50 on Prince. But I could see a scenario where we lose Weber and Gibson, then miss on Prince. Beckner is definitely not coming here as well, who we put some significant effort into. Not trying to be doom and gloom, as I don't anticipate that finish but just saying it is a possibility to consider.

That being said, I think we DO keep Weber and definitely get Hill. Beyond those two, I have no idea what will happen with Prince and Gibson. Imo if we get Prince and Hill, plus keep Gibson and Weber, that is an A or A- finish. Probably lean towards A- simply because DL was really the emphasis spot and I don't see any guy in this class that will be a Day 1 impact, which we may well need with Bennett, Miller, Frazier, and Carter all gone. I will say Cornell may be able to get ready in time considering he got in early and has the tools...just needs to hit the weight room and redistribute weight quickly. But I see Landers, Hamilton, Alabi, and Jones as guys who all need time before they are ready (high upside though on most of them). If we land any of Wilkins, Gallimore, Beckner, or Gustin, we get at least one guy who can step in right away and play. Plus this class lacks a pass rusher on the edge and that is where Gustin would have been huge. Luckily both of Holmes and Hubbard are young and bring that, but an edge rusher is a must for the '16 class now. Don't get me wrong, I like the numbers we brought in at DL and think at least a few of those guys will stand out. I think Cornell will be a stud, Jones could be huge, Landers showed out big late, Alabi has a huge ceiling and could be a monster 1-tech, and Hamilton I have no idea on to be honest. But LJ Sr. will get that group to be a good rotation no doubt, it just will take some time.

If we can keep who we have and land Hill, I say that is a B or B+ finish...with just Weber and Hill, a B-. But no matter how this class finishes, the young talent already on our roster is absurd and there are plenty of very good prospects already signed up, plus what looks to be redonkulous '16 and '17 hauls to address any potential shortcomings.

Tough break on Gustin. OSU made it interesting but that is little solace. However as @Honor&Glory said this class is loaded with 25 great players so anything else is gravy. Arnette is in and Hill is trending OSU's way. I have him in as of now. I just can't see Prince bucking the trend and leaving his home turf. I have him as a Terp as of now. That just leaves Gibson and Weber because I think Boulware and Beckner are gone. Gibson seems like he is in but will drag out the drama as long as he possibly can. Weber is the tough one because there are so many conflicting rumors out there. I still have him as in this class. I reserve the right to change my mind should new information become available but based on what's out there and reading the tea leaves, I think he sticks as of now.

ESPN ticker just showed that Alabama, Florida State, and Ohio State have the three highest-ranked average recruiting classes over the last four seasons and that all three made the playoffs. Gee, I wonder why they didn't mention which team beat the other two in said playoffs for the national title...

I believe that the loss of the losses against MSU, Clemson, and VTech took some momentum out of the 2015 signing class. Obviously momentum has been restored. It also became harder to poach in Pennsylvania

It would be easy to hang your head over this class not getting a stud DE that could step in and play from day 1. However, it opens the door to land multiple stud DE's in the 2016 class. Ohio State already has a commitment in 2016 from Jonathan Cooper, and we are looking great with regards to Nick Bosa, Auston Robertson, & Prince Sammons, among other national blue chip DEs. It's precisely what Alabama just went through after swinging and missing with stud DB prospects late in their recruiting cycle last year (look up the DBs they're about to sign tomorrow. It's sickening)... and we're about to go through the same process with our DE recruiting next year.

Besides, I'm not betting against Larry Johnson this year with a full pre-season ahead of him. This isn't a DePriest/Hicks situation. We'll be just fine.
