tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Thank you. Still holding out for a D1 offer (softball) but are very happy with the D2 schools that have expressed interest. In it for the education. Sorry to get off track. Back to OSU discussion.

Best wishes for your kid to get the D1 offer. Our daughter actually got a few full-ride D1 offers, but to schools where academics sucked. And some D2 offers with enough academic grants so they would have been full rides also - but not athletically competitive enough to be interesting. But for the non-revenue sports, you have to balance the $ benefit with what the kid will get out of the overall college experience. It isn't an easy decision. Hope you are in a position to let her make the decision; not every family is.

This...I choose my experience at OSU without athletics over a partial scholarship (had a couple for both wrestling in D1 or football D2). While they were the best years of my life, I also am sure I would have loved going the athletic route. With a little debt. Either way, congrats H&G! :) But D1 football/basketball is in a unique position to offer only full scholarships.

The decision is all hers. she will have the grades and test scores for OSU but wants a smaller school for her undergrad. The D1's she is visiting offer great academics in her area of interest (pre-professional/pre vet) in a small setting with a high rate of grads being accepted to OSU/MSU for vet school.

Seems pretty simple what the staff is trying to do down the stretch...they are focusing on four position groups: DL, DB, WR and OL.

In play on the DL appears to be Beckner and Gustin.
In play at DB appears to be Orr and Arnette.
In play at WR appears to be Hill.
In play at OL appears to be Boulware and Prince (I know Wariboko is out there but I think that is all smoke).

I would love to see them fit in Beckner and Gustin but one or the other would be stellar.
I think they want one of Orr and Arnette...let's see how hard they push for Orr this weekend. If they strike out here I am okay with that considering what they have already landed.
I would love to see them add Hill to go along with Stump...which may only further bolster the DB class if EGW starts out there.
It seems to be Boulware is the most likely between him and Prince. Like DB, I'm not as concerned here if they swing and miss on both considering what they already have in the fold this year although I'm sure they don't want to get in a situation where they have to start moving more DL over like they did with Price and Farris and it already looks like one of last years OL might be a bust so you might see them really push here.

I'm guessing they land 2 or 3 more players from that list...with the possibility they could still circle back on some guys they originally passed on.

Austrian Robinson could be in play on the DL too, although he seems to be after Beckner & Gustin.

Most important commitments in the Big Ten
Ohio State - Justin Hilliard, Linebacker
247Sports Composite rank: No. 34 overall
247Sports Composite rating: Five-star, .9848
Why he’s so important: Hilliard is important for many reasons. He is highest-ranked player in the class, is from Cincinnati - where OSU has struggled at times to recruit - and he could make an immediate impact. Hilliard had offers from all the top programs in the nation, and it is important for Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes to keep the top player in the state from leaving and playing his college ball elsewhere. Down the line quarterback Joe Burrow may have us regretting this pick, but with the embarrassment of riches under center right now we went with Hilliard as the choice.

The bolded is what I am thinking...you can just move EGW at that point, so you solve one numbers problem there (although I much prefer him in the pivot spot). I trust the staff and all but I am curious why they are so transfixed on the DB spot right now. We know all of Bell, Powell, and Apple are studs, Burrows is young and almost beat out Bell for his spot, Conley shows some promise, Reeves is back for 1 more year, and all of Smith, Lattimore, Webb got rave reviews from the staff (don't forget Hooker, a late bloomer at safety). So even accounting for entries, possible early departures for the NFL, and attrition, you would think they would be more than set with Dean, Davis, Ward, Norwood, and possibly EGW. Just on paper it seems we are already bursting at the seams and given only 2-3 spots likely are left, I have to wonder if we are about to see some attrition at the DB position and/or a '15 guy jump ship.

To wit, my ideal finish would be Beckner (only over Gustin because he is a DT), Prince, and Hill. Highly unlikely though imo and even a Boulware/Orr/Hill finish would be nice. But I am really hoping we can pull an upset in the late hours of the high of a national title and get at least one of Beckner, Gustin, or Prince.

Bell, Powell, Apple, and Burrows are all eligible to leave next year. Will they? Probably Bell, possibly Apple. Reeves is gone next year regardless. Then you have left only Lattimore, Webb, and Conley at CB.

Can't wait to see how this class ends up with 5 of the top 7 guys left on campus this weekend! Should get a good idea soon how things will shake out. My too early prediction is that at DT we get Robinson because Beckner's ties to Mizzou are too strong, OT we make a huge impression on Prince and bring him in with Maryland as the only competition, and CB/WR I give the nod to Orr based on versatility because he looks great at corner and the slot where as Hill looks destined to be a wide out all the way. Would love to be wrong on Beckner, and looks to be a toss up between Hill and Orr with whichever one pulls the trigger first. It appears that the class will take 27 at this point.
