tOSU Recruiting Discussion

This was posted in Dante Booker's thread by starBUCKS and my question is how are we going to fit 4 quality linebackers into the 2014 class when we probably will be looking to bring in 4-5 offensive linemen and probably 3 WRs, 3 DBs, 1 TE, 2 RB/Ath, 1 QB, and probably 2-3 DLs in a class of 17 or 18. I don't know maybe one or two other guys mentioned by starBUCKS will grow into a player who will play with a hand down.
Booker, Berger, McMillan and Garrett would all have spots IMO. I would love to get Nyles Morgan in too, and would be hard to pass on even with limited spots.

I personally think if that scenario plays out (and all 4 look quite likely at this point) we could take from either the RB/ATH or DL spot given the numbers we have devoted there in past classes. We have Dunn, Ball, and EzE as traditional RBs and are bring in Jalin who is in that mold and Wilson looks likely. No need to bring in more than 1 pivot/RB type imo, though it would be nice.

Moreso on DL I think we can just bring in one guy, possibly two if they are elite. In the last two classes combined we have Washington, Spence, Schutt, Pittman, Bosa, Hill, Sprinkle, Price, and potentially Munger. Plus Grant just moved down and Steve Miller + Chris Carter are still young. I say we go for the elites in Hand, Andrew Brown, etc. and see if we can't bring in one of them.

Looking Forward: 2014 Tight Ends

By Tony Gerdeman

Much in the same way that the recruitment of slot receivers has become the "Search for the next Percy Harvin", Ohio State's treasure hunt for tight ends has turned into the "Search for the next Aaron Hernandez".

The days of Ohio State looking for a tight end like Reid Fragel are gone for now, and the quest for tight ends who can split out and make plays after the catch is in full effect.

As proficient as Coach Meyer and the staff are, I like our odds of pull 4 or 5 of 19 targets.

RB07OSU pointed out a few days ago, OSU went 1 for 19 this year recruiting OT.

And it isn't as if we didn't recognize the need for a tackle, nor that we didn't go after a ton of tackles:
Dorian Johnson (Pitt), Pocic (LSU), Tuley Tillman (scUM), Kugler (scUM), Fox (scUM), Bosch (scUM), Finley (MSU), Lacy (UCLA), Skipper (Arkansas), Hunt (?), Gray (Maryland), Tunsil (?), Vonashek (South Carolina), Lazzard (WVU), Montellus (ND), Bivin (ND), McGovern (ND), and Raulerson (Texas). That is 18 OT prospects we know of that were offered and went elsewhere.

While I think OL recruiting has become a problem this year, it was not for lack of effort by the staff. Allot of those 19 committed before the season started, and it appears to me that we were only really interested OT after Gardner committed. (Before anyone goes crazy, I agree we would have taken Dawson if he wanted to come, it just would have been Dawson AND another OT).

I sure that lots of open spots will mean an easier time next year.

We already have matched our record from last year and have something like 372 days to go.

Scout lists Marcelys as a tackle.

Hes listed as an OT, but so have a number of our O line. Most seem to think he's certainly a OG in college

Where do I begin? The staff has had an extra year to build something in the way of a pro OSU relationships with the 2014 recruits. After going 12-0, the staff has proven they will be competing for national titles. Many of the O-line recruiting targets attended games last year. Michigan's depth chart is no longer inviting to say the least. Bottom line, I think we will do fine restocking the O-line next year.

Oh I agree. Just pointing out it's not a gimme. And hoping UFM uses this for motivation :-)
