tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Given the chatter about Urban "going national" and passing on Ohio talent, I decided to see whether that was accurate or overblown compared to Tressel.

Ohio Top-20 lists and OSU's pursuit:

2013 - Offered T-7. Snubbed 8, 10, 13, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20... with 11 months left to offer.

2012 - Off 7 of T-9. Snubbed 5, 07, 10, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20.
2011 - Offered T-7. Snubbed 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 16, 17, 18.
2010 - Offered T-5. Snubbed 7, 09, 10, 12, 13, 16, 18, 19.
2009 - Offered T-6. Snubbed 7, 10, 13, 14, 16, 17, 19, 20.
2008 - Offered T-8. Snubbed 9, 11, 12, 14, 15, 18, 19, 20

Very eluminating. Thanks, Jwin. I think the difference now is that Hoke is riding that snub factor to get all of them. Rich Rod was never able to make it work.

Attention from RichRod is kinda like getting attention from the girl in school who had a certain... morally casual attitude.

Interesting. I'm guessing that this probably is similar all the way through JTs era. Thus far, it seems that this year's class under Meyer is comparable to the previous years.

Color me slightly worried about recruiting going forward. I would never expect or assume that recruiting would always go like it did for the finish of the 2012 class, but after starting out hot it seems like we've run into a snag at certain positions.

LB, OL, and TE all at the moment to me feel like we've lost out #1 options in each of those positions and now we are onto the next wave of kids that are still good but not perhaps the best options we were hoping for.

I know it's early but It's also been stated how quickly the 2013 class is making their college choices in retrospect to past recruiting classes. Combine that fact with us losing out on a few option A's (TE that selected PSU, and Logan Tulley to scUM) it has me wondering when the peices are going to start falling into place for our class.

I have no doubt we will have a good to great recruiting class but as of right now I admitt I'm getting a little restless, but in hindesight we do not have many slots to fill and we must be selective.

I'm slightly more optimistic. There's very few players that we were really in on that we really wanted who committed elsewhere.

As far as LBs go, our #1 target is Jaylon Smith who we are still in good shape for. After that it's probably Alex Anzalone and Courtney Love.

Offensive line. Sure Tulley-Tillman or Fox would have been nice but I don't think we ever really had a chance. We already got Lisle and are in great shape with Pocic and also are targeting Gray, Bivin (probably ND bound), Lazard, Montelus and McGovern.

Adam Breneman would have been a great TE, however I think Mike Heuereman and Josh McNeil will be more than satisfactory as both will be top 10 at their position.

Add that to the other elite talent we are in on and have a good shot at landing like Foster, Barrett, Green, Gibson, Webb, Hill, Bower, Bosa, and many others.

We'll be fine. Most of these kids have said they want to announce either before summer or before their senior season starts. We'll have a nice run of commits going forward.

At the moment, none of it matters. NLOI signing day is quite a ways off, and for three month in between now and then, Coach Meyer will be hosting elite players at home games. There will be uncommitted elite players, and committed elite players (if he wants them) from the 2013 class, players from the 2014 class, and I would bet a few players even younger.

We'll be fine, Coach Meyer is a shrewd horse trader.

Who have we lost at LB?

It would have been nice to get Kugler but Lisle is a top talent and Pocic could be our next commit. Then also have Montelus in play and Colin McGovern. The OL class of Michigan is fueling their recruiting efforts so far and ours could end up every bit as good. Not discounting theirs as it's a tremendous haul but expecting Meyer to make 1 himself.

Honestly, not being a homer at all, if I could pick 5 OL for Ohio State to get this year they would be Kugler, Pocic, Bosch, Lisle, and Montelus. Fox and McGovern right there as well. The great thing about OL this year is the Midwest is as loaded as it's ever been. Just have to go get our remaining targets now, Pocic can be a great pickup. Michigan wanted him bad but they weren't gonna wait.

Sure Breneman would have been nice at TE, McNeil and Heuerman just ooze talent though and should both be tremendous pickups.

Meyer isn't pressing for commits. Just calm down and watch him work. 4 commits in both scout/rivals top 100 with 1 slightly lower is a pretty great haul so far.

Michigan are pressing for commits. Meyer is trying to get the best possible player at every position first.

Two points: 1) Tons of early commits going around (I don't expect many of them to stick nationally) 2) I see many of these guys as 1a and 1b types. Meyer puts out tons of offers to talented guys...more offers means more "misses." I don't think we've "lost" anyone yet. Fox and Tilley-Tulman were never going anywhere but Michigan. Breneman was a done deal to PSU from the beginning. Plenty of talent left that we are in good shape with.

I thinks its been said many times Meyer isn't giving up on Breneman.

The point being it doesn't matter how early the class fills up, it matters how they contribute on the field (Tejas is the perfect example). I trust Meyer more so than I trusted Tressel (and I trusted him alot)... Meyer will likely get most of the guys he wants... worrying or shit talking at this point about recruits is pointless...

I love the fact we have a 2 time National Champ coach and a proven recruiter and chicken littles are comin out the woodwork... must be that time of year

If we had 20 recruits people would be worried about holding onto them(like scUM fans will) or crying that we didn't save any room for a guy they wanted. Urban knows what he wants...still figuring out what he needs though. I mean the guy made miracles happen in 2-3 months..We all got used to damn near every day excitement..Now that he's got a full year to work his magic not only do I expect a top 5 class when it's all said and done, but every need this team has to be filled.

Still fully confident that we will have a top 3 class and finish ahead of UM.

That said, it is unsettling to see UM doing so well with so many Ohio kids and some bona-fide head to head recruiting wins. Granted, we didn't offer a lot of those kids and Meyer is still playing catch up on kids that Hoke has been working for over a year. The closer you look the less reason for concern - it is just different than what we are used to, and not what we were expecting after the incredible two months Urban started with.

But we will be fine.

As for the bolded section of the quoted post - like it or not recruiting is now an end in itself as well as the building block of success on the field. We follow it daily and celebrate our standing based on third part rankings and our own opinions. We can look back later and see how foolish we were, but on that first Wednesday in February many of us either hang our heads or pop champagne corks - particularly in regards to our standing relative to that team up North. (You know the one that finished behind us in every major recruiting service ranking this past season after leading for three quarters.)

My take- apologies if this has been out there already.

Brady Hoke and staff are good recruiters. They are also trying to strike while the iron is hot- once Spring Game, Friday Night Lights, and (most importantly) the fall 2012 season gets here, their ability to point to themselves as the alpha dog in the B1G will be distinctively over.

Not worried in the slightest... the hot chicks don't have to jump at the first offer for the prom. They can be selective.
