Game Thread tOSU @ Penn State, Oct 25th @ 8pm ET, ESPN

Poor pedsters, they are almost like an in-state school in their pathetic desire to be made relevant in our eyes. The reality is that they were less of a secondary rival than Wiscy was in the past, and they'll be less of a secondary rival than Sparty will be moving forward.

They are just the pedsters--an immoral freakshow of a fanbase whose only relevance is rooted in how fun it is to go balls deep on them.

Perhaps a better metaphor could have been used with regards to the cult.

I guess it depends on your definition of "rivalry". Is there a rivalry between Ohio State and Indiana? Between Ohio State and Purdue? Between Ohio State and Wisconsin? I'd answer all of those with a "no". If Indiana becomes good and consistently wins 6-7 games in the Big Ten for 5-8 years, and there's some real good knock-out games between Ohio State and Indiana, they could become a secondary rivalry. Just like Penn State could have become a secondary rivalry, or Wisconsin. Also, putting some history in there helps: "Snow Bowl", "10 years war", "Because I couldn't go for 3". The argument of "You guys cried in 1994, so we lost the national championship" - that doesn't make a rivalry.

I totally think Wiscy has been a rival the last few years. Ohio State's road to a Big Ten title went through Madison a hell of a lot more often than it went through Ann Arbor. Throw in the almost galactic douchebaggery of Bert, and it was pretty good while it lasted.

Just out of curiosity, why do you care so much that Penn State be declared a rival of OSU? I've never seen a person who purports to be an OSU fan care so much about legitimizing Penn State's program.
It felt like a rivalry in the 90s. And at that time I probably assumed that would continue indefinitely. But as time progressed, they missed the mark of being a top program that I thought they'd be. So now they feel second tier and would have to prove something over a very long period in the B1G to fool me into thinking of them that way again.

I consider scUM, MSU, Wisky and Illinois to be bigger rivals. I'd maybe put them above Iowa, only because even when Iowa is good, they don't give us much of a game without Vandenberg's mom in the stands.

Incidently, When will Penn State be able to beat Iowa on a consistent basis? Maybe then they can worry about who their rival is...

Why do you think I care so much? I just find it funny on the excuses on why Penn State can't and never will be a rivalry, especially people who think because SCUM is our main rivalry we can't have another, like there are not other major schools in the country that do not have two rivalry games in a season. I just find that sort simple minded thinking amusing. I am not advocating that PSU is anywhere near the realm of SCUM,

How am I legitimizing Penn State's program? I guess I will tell the Athletic Department to give me back my donations and season tickets because buckeyesin07 thinks I am "purpoting" to be an OSU fan.

There is a 800 plus page thread dedicated to PSU. I for one have never been to website mentioned in that thread. If no one cared about PSU why would so many people here go their website to see what fans think.

Just to play devil advocate OSU owns winning percentages of .754 (Iowa), .741 (Wisky), .700 (MSU), and .679 (Illinois) of the teams you mentioned during Big Ten play. All of those percentages are greater than the winning percentage over PSU (.650) during Big Ten games.

Also your last comment is apples to oranges. It is like saying when Indiana can beat Michigan on a consistent basis maybe they could then be a rival of (insert random Big Ten team). The Vandenberg comment was good though.

They could have become what Wisconsin is/was to osu (and what sparty may be now), which I would argue is just below fringe rival status (Bert staying would have changed things)

Instead they were broken by a league they came to dominate, did a pathetic job recruiting 3 out of every 4 years and failed to jettison the dead weight coaching their program.

If they wanted a rivalry, they should have been more credible.

That's great. PSU is barely on the level of Sparty or Wisconsin at this point and that's only because Sparty and Wisconsin were mostly horrible for decades. Penn State's status as a power school is built upon beating Temple, Rutgers and other smallish east coast schools with hand-selected refs and a pedophilia-enabling, NCAA rule avoiding, severely overrated coaching "legend". Penn State is barely a .500 school in Big Ten play since they joined. that's not a rival in any sense of the word for the King of the Big Ten conference - at least not any more than Northwestern or Iowa are....

There is an 800 plus page dedicated to the evil that has emanated from Ped State and their wanton disregard for the safety of 20+ children due to the above. You'll notice there is more ridicule and scorn for the school than anything resembling what you'll see in the multiple 400+ page threads about scum and the multiple 200+ page threads about Wisconsin and their fatass former coach. Having a large thread on BP =/= a rivalry.

EDIT to add: Pumpkin Ped State, not as a rival, but as a school that shouldn't exist due to the evil allowed to perpetuate on campus and the cover-up to protect the fraudulent legacy of JoePed.

A couple of rivalry gauges:

Buckeyeplanet member Avatars mocking that team
Drop in a Buckeye fan wedding attendance when bride schedules wedding for a Saturday when tOSU is playing

I don't think PSU moves the needle.

Maybe people around here think you care so much because you've devoted so many posts to attempting (lamely) to argue that PSU is a rival of Ohio State.

How am I legitimizing Penn State's program?

By claiming that a team is worthy of being OSU's rival when that team's on the field performance does a damn good impression of Northwestern's.

I guess I will tell the Athletic Department to give me back my donations and season tickets because buckeyesin07 thinks I am "purpoting" to be an OSU fan.

:tibor:. Are we talking about Penn State's athletic department or Ohio State's?

Other posters have beaten me to the punch in explaining this to you.
