tOSU Linebackers History (Merged)

While I agree with you on some things high lonesome I also disagree

If you are as good of athletes as your LB's are you can be taught to rush the qb. By the way Jason Taylor is maybe 260 and an al Pro. you do not need to be 280 to be a rush end
You are correct when saying you don't need to be 280 pounds to play end. One of our ends is I think 265 (Mike Kudla), but trust me 30 pounds goes a long ways when you're playing D-end. When you have the chance to have a 280 pound D End rush the end only to have a 255 pound linebacker swoop under and create havoc you have to take it.

actually moving a more athletic man to the DE spot allows you to do more things not less. i.e. zone blitzes and stunts, moving to a 3-4 in mid cadance
You're correct but you're incorrect here IMO. We do zone blitzes with our d-tackles and stationary d-ends so having our linebackers do it as d-ends is totally not worth it. Now I wouldn't be making any arguement if the 3-4 was our base defense. However Its a 4-3. Now while I understand we're just discussing possibilities sometimes too much for a defense to understand, and learn is just not warrented. I'd rather be very good at what we do then know alot about alot of different formations.

carpenter definantly will be coming off the edge this season. dont even question his size as jason taylor is 255 lbs. maybe he'll be put at end sometimes to make room for one of our younger linebackers so that they can get experience.

if you question his effectiveness see Terrel Suggs

It is tough to ask even the best secondaries to cover for more than a few seconds. If you are truely having trouble getting a good rush(don't have to get sacks but make the qb think about you) then your secondary will struggle at times.
I totally agree that its tough to ask a secondary to hold coverage for a few seconds. I'm not saying we can just let our secondary sit back because we're that good. What I'm saying is that we'll be able to take more chances with our Lb'ers because our secondary will be a full year better. Of course its dumb to not give the secondary help but hey if you can force teams to have to throw quick that plays well with our defense because for the most part our secondary/linebackers are very sure tacklers and play well in open field. What actually worries me is when we dont' pressure and the other teams just have their Qb's sitting back there in the pocket.

Anyways I'm not against carpenter lining up at end once in a while because yes he is effective from time to time as we saw last year. However when you have that kind of size and speed why waste it? The bottom line is he's not Terrell Suggs if we line Bobby Carp up at D-end it makes our front 4 more suspectable to the run. Having the choice of either having a 280 kid in with a 255 guy at linebacker or instead going with a 255 d-end and a 235 linebacker makes us alittle bit thin if we have to go against a running oriented team like texas. Now if this is situational you guys are talk'n bout like on 3rd down only then hell yes I"m all for it.

There was talk not only about Freeman being used as a rush DE but also the possibility of going to a pseudo 3-4 scheme, sort of a hybrid between a true 3-4 and the DL-drop-into-coverage scheme we used with Will Smith. This is would be to put the fastest, biggest people on the field. I can see them moving someone like Freeman around to an open spot during the snap count and letting him blitz in while leaving Hawk, D'Andrea/Schlegel, and Carpenter anchor their spots at LB.

i dont think ohio state has ever had this fast of a defense, save maybe '02

Actually, I think this year's defense is even faster overall...however, the 2002 defense may just have an edge in senior-leadership. Then again, maybe Hawk, Carpenter, Kudla, Salley, and Everett will provide the same level of leadership that Smith, Wilhelm, Grant, Doss, and Nickey did.

Yeah I'm with you guys on this one.... I also think this years team is faster than the 02' especially at Linebacker. We just have to see if we have that leadership that mili was talk'n bout. If we do get great leadership then I see great things for the team as well.
