tOSU Linebackers History (Merged)

Actually Mili, Smith was a Jr. in 02 and Peterson was the big bad senior....just nit-picking.

I don't like the idea about Terry because I just don't think he deserves to be on the field ahead of Freeman, D'Andrea (?), or even Hoobler. Maybe down the road. Maybe he's ready to contribute now; I don't know, but it would seem like Freeman is too much player to keep off the field anymore.

I think we hammered this a few months ago....I'm all down with modified 3-4's that send random LB's at Vince Young (or any QB), but I think we all pretty much figure there will be four "roster" defensive linemen on most downs.

I'm going to leave the 4-3 vs. 3-4 to the experts like Grad21, but I would love to see them mix it up some. Have Kudla drop back every once in a while like Will used to do. I still think Carp would make a perfect player in the Browns' 3-4 (Do you hear me, Phil Savage?).

Hard to compare the 02 defense with the yet to be seen 05 package. But I will say this, much of the 02's defensive success had to do with a tremendous push up front with the unsung guys like Anderson, Peterson, Scott (when he played inside), and David Thompson. These guys used up blockers and allowed the "speed" rushers to make plays. Regardless of the personnel, the more effective our inside people are, the greater chance of success for the blitzing LB's and ends. Having returnees like Pitcock and Green, (and then we'll see who else steps up), should give us a chance.

If it were my decision, Iowa would be the team removed from the Big10 to get back to 10 teams: geographically they make the least sense in what has become a Great Lakes-states conference, and would be more appropriate lined up with their instate rival in the Big12; then they could boot Baylor and make that "Big" mean something again. Besides wrestling, Iowa doesn't have any real great sports tradition that the Big10 would miss terribly, and besides Ferentz there's no real reason for longterm optimism for their football success.

Don't take this the wrong way, I have nothing against Iowa; but objectively Iowa has always made the least sense to me in the Big10 since Penn State joined. Being subjective I would instead catapult hated Wisconsin into the deep reaches of space...
Actually, I agree with BayBuck. First, let's get rid of Iowa, then Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Northwestern, Indiana, Purdue, Penn State, and the schools up north. Then, we can replace them with Ohio U, Miami of Ohio, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Toledo, Akron, Kent State, and Youngstown State - that way, the conference will be "geographically pure" with only Ohio schools; to get back to ten, however, we'll also need to add Marshall, but they're pretty close to Ohio, so maybe the conference won't get too tainted.

To maintain the trend of way off the wall comments in this thread, does anyone else think A.J. Hawk looks like Woody Harrelson?
I'm pretty sure it was Sears that pointed out his similarity to Brett Hull last year. I'll stick with that as A.J.'s look-alike.

Man the potential that this defense has is awesome.

I love the idea of using Freeman or Carp as a rush end. A couple of things it will do is bring the rb to block that side b/c a slow tackle can't block them and free up the other side for one on one and also you can drop the end back into coverage and send the backer on the other side(hawk) and overload the opposite side and create pressure on the qb.

I am glad that we have all these options, now lets see what heacock can do with all of them.

Hmmm... see... now this is a sensible way to look at things... do we still call Kudla's position the "Leo" backer?

If we do... its always kind of the reasonable response to people who want to switch to the 3-4... sometimes we already do... and Kudla's the other LB... and we do use this guy to do zone blitzing, etc... so we can bring an LB off the edge...

I think if you see our LB's playing "DE"... and you might... it will be at this spot... but also remember that its a much more flexible position than just rush end... or at least has been in the past.

So the answer to "why don't we have an LB at rush end" is, well... we sort of already do.

Mark may called our linebackers slow?

I was just listening to the halftime show of the memphis game while i was online and I am pretty sure I just heard mark may refer to Miami's linebackers as the best in the country. The other guy in the booth called him on it, even asked if he really thought they were better than ours. His response was that Ohio States are big strong straight ahead runners who can blow up offensive lineman but Miami's can cover anyone or something, said we dont have that recovery speed...
I guess maybe we just need to recruit more floridians so we can be that fast :tongue2:
