tOSU Linebackers History (Merged)

i was actually thinking about Anthony Schlegal in front of D'Andrea... Schlegs had 84 tackles and lead the team in TFL's in basically half a season... granted, his first couple games were a little rough, but once he got his feet under him, he was a freaking beast...

I love carpenter, but it sno secret that greenway is currently a more highly regarded OLB. I agree he may just be overshadowed by Hawk, but as of 2004 Greenway would have been drafted before Carpenter. Now if Carpenter can keep up that speed, with his ridiculous new size, he could become a lot more attractive as a hybrid LB/DE.

Why? Greenway has played for 2 years now.....why do you have to wait for MDA to prove something?

Uh, maybe because Mike has been hurt and Greenway hasn't?

D'Andrea had already beat out Schlegel for the starting job last year until he got hurt, so that should answer that right there. Mike was really starting to shine until his injury.

I do agree with lvbuckeye about Carpenter possibly being the top LB taken in next year's draft. 6'3", 260-270, with 4.5 or faster speed. NFL scouts will be creaming their trousers...

which begs the question: who would Greenway beat out?

he wouldn't be in the middle, and he wouldn't beat out Hawk or Carp... in the two deep, most certainly, but a starter?

Objectively, who is to say he wouldn't beat out Carpenter or Hawk?
Carpenter is a tough call, tho you have to realize if Greenway played with hawk he'd be overshadowed somewhat too. Hawk, from a measurable standpoint, probably doesn't compare to Greenway & Carp, yet he's still regarded as the best in the business at LBer. Hawk saw a lot of PT during his freshman year on a LB corps with three drafted LBers, including one AA.

If you haven't picked it up by now, realize your stud LBers might be in for a humility lesson. Hawk and Carpenter were just as good during the early part of 2004, but b/c our rebuilt DL struggled they were unable to play to their ability. Good luck recovering from your DL exodus, and doing so with less talented backups than we had this year.

uh, maybe thats my point? greenway is great now. MDA has never put a season together. thats a little unfair to Greenway, don't you think?

I agree with this. MDA is very talented, and if he strung together a full season......who's knows? But until then, it's hard to speculate.....

I understand the point about how the defensive line only improves the play of the linebackers. But don't you think they should have been able to shed the blocks of the offensive lineman who made it to the second level?

Personally I've never really bought into the fact that because you lost your defense line and struggled, the same thing is going to happen at Iowa. One of the key things that Ron Aiken (D-Line Coach) and Norm Parker (D-Coordinator) stress is gap assignements.

that isn't the whole story, though... the O was struggling BIG TIME, which put the D on the field for long stretches of time... nah, i just had a second thought. how much do you know about football? where is the game won? the answer is IN THE TRENCHES. i don't care if you have Lawrence Taylor back there, if the D-line struggles, the whole Defense struggles... how do you think that Tate and Basanez were able to light us up? it certainly wasn't because the LBers were playing poorly...

perhaps you forget that Hawk was #2 in the Big Ten with 141 tackles.
Carpenter had over 90 tackles
Schlegal had 84 tackles...

trust me when i state that Greenway and Hodge will not be as productive in '05 as they were in '04...

Not any more unfair than it is to D'Andrea. Mike was really starting to tear it up early...had he stayed healthy and kept at that level, folks would be talking about how we have the three best LBs in the country all starting next to each other.

How doesn't he compare? He's faster than either of them, and although he's smaller than Carpenter, at 6'1" and 250 he's no runt (and is 15 pounds heavier than Greenway along with being faster).
