Game Thread tOSU @ Indiana, Sat 10/3 @ 3:30p ET, ABC/ESPN2

The field looked like a greasy ice rink. If that was so then why were we running sideways so much? Conditions had an effect. The wind? I couldn't tell from the TV.
The adjustments at half time made a big difference and give the coaches credit for that.
The QBs? Maybe JT is just not fully recovered, yet. Maybe Urban thinks Cardale is the better stretch the field option for this team.
But injuries to the WR corp are starting to effect everything.
How much help are the WRers, other than Thomas, giving the QB?
It seems like Cardale is yelling at them a lot.
We really need Paris Campbell back. But maybe we see more of Hill, Dixon and/or McLaurin soon.
Maryland has no offense so that should be a "W".
Ped State looks like another defensive struggle. Glad it's at home.

As was pointed out, we struggled last year. And the defense wasn't as good as right now.
The kicking game looks better.
So, if we can slow down the turnovers we have a winning formula.
I heard that historically, Urban's teams tend to turn over the ball a bit.
Is it just me or does Michael Thomas look like he's open on just about every play?
There lies the issue. We shouldn't have been running sideways for the reasons you listed but also because teams have been busting up those plays all year (outside of the spin) so by now I'm amazed that we haven't started to gather a little more understanding what we can and cannot do. BTW have we ran a quick screen to a running back all year?? I don't count swing passes either. Where is the jailbreak screens or running back screens?

Can list
1. Power
2. crossing routes
3.counters

Can't list
1. Running back sweeps
2. Option football
3. Red zone passing
4. QB designed runs

Important set up plays

1. Jet sweep/touch pass

Sorry to pull this out by itself Taos, but while kickoffs and punts were good I would hate to see a game go down to us kicking a FG to win. I have no faith that we can make a field goal in general, let alone one when it counts. It has been a couple of years now since we have had a clutch FG kicker.
Good lord would that suck.... 50 yard field goal to win the game at scUM. WOULD NOT LIKE

Maybe but I've seen absolutely no indication whatsoever that this team will return to that form. At least 2014 had several games where they consistently looked like the best offense in the country. Right now I've lost complete faith that the offense will ever return to that form and I'm blaming that on coaching. To have an offense go from the juggernaut it was most of last year to what it is now despite 90% of the offense players returning points almost exclusively to coaching. Some of the worst offensive coaching I've ever seen to be frank. No way should our offense look THIS inept after 5 weeks.

Again, the "best offense in the country"struggled mightily at times - against Navy, Va. Tech, Penn State, Michigan State, Minnie, Indiana and Michigan. And while the offense was dropping 50 on the Bearcats, the defense was surrendering 28 including three bombs to one wide receiver. They blew two red zone opportunities against Alabama, came alive in the second quarter and most of the third quarter and then settled into a disastrous sequence that coulda/shoulda turned the game to Alabama's favor until Zeke's 80 yard run. Against Oregon they pissed away four scoring opportunities on fumbles and/or mistakes.

Point: This is nothing new. You run a very high-powered, sophisticated offense you're going to make a number of high-risk, unsophisticated errors.

The problem with having a highly successful coach head the program is that his assistants become head coaches elsewhere and thus the coaching "chemistry" is always developing. As for "offensive juggernaut," those 50 or more points games came against Kent State, Cincinnati, Maryland, Rutgers, Illinois and Wisconsin - out of that group, only the Badgers had something resembling a defense.

Come on cinci last year in 75 percent of the games we worked teams. This year every game (tech had us down at the half) has been a cluster fuck from start to finish. We haven't had ONE game were we played well on offense as its been disheveled every game. This is different than last year.

You can break down a game and point out "Oh, OSU has look good here, here, and here. But they just need to fix this."

At some point it has to be more than that. Ohio State will have to start passing the eye test in 3 weeks when the playoff poll begins. Because the committee will not have the time to break down every teams stats and really figure out who they are. The eye test (aka "style points") will be necessary - especially if the Big 12 is still playing high level football.

The turnovers really have nothing to do with "a very high-powered, sophisticated offense." Guys like Jalin Marshall are simply dropping the ball, and Cardale Jones has made some downright awful throws. The was nothing "risky" about the three plays that resulted in turnovers against Indiana, they were just really bad mistakes by guys who can play much better.

And the team ran only 61 plays yesterday, so they averaged a turnover every 20 plays. By way of comparison, here's how other "high-powered" offenses fared in their most recent games: Texas A+M had zero turnovers in 86 plays; TCU had zero turnovers in 80 plays; Baylor had one turnover in 76 plays; and Utah had zero turnovers in 74 plays. A team can run lots of plays and gain lots of yards and score lots of points without turning the ball over.

Right now, Ohio State is 117th in FBS with 13 turnovers. That's just bad football, plain and simple.

Yep, that's usually how people watch games, with their eyes.

But if you really want to rely on statistics, here you go:

Ohio State is 117th in FBS with 13 total turnovers.

Ohio State is 104th in FBS with -4 turnover margin.

Ohio State is 101st in penalties with 8.0 per game.

Ohio State is 99th in penalty yardage with 70.4 per game.

Ohio State is 103rd in 3rd down conversions, with a .348 conversion rate.

Ohio State is 99th in time of possession, with 27:36 per game.

Ohio State is 108th in FBS in red zone offense, with 12 scores in 16 trips (75.0% success), with only six of those scores being TDs.

Ohio State is averaging 5.0 punts per game, as opposed to 3.2 punts per game last season.

Despite all that ugliness, Ohio State is 33rd in total offense with 452.2 yards per game and 41st in scoring offense with 34.4 points per game.

The defense has fared much better, placing 14th in total defense with 283.0 yards per game, and 14 in scoring defense with 15.2 points per game.

Ohio State is winning ugly right now. That will not pass the eye test, which really is how people evaluate teams (at least in part). The sloppy play will also lead to actual losses down the road if it isn't cleaned up.

One good thing about these games is we are being "tested" and that builds mental toughness.
I'm not sure what the effect of turn overs on Cardale's psyche is. He is just a kid.
The defense is just a bunch of tough guys .
That's what the offense could use. A sense of just being unstoppable and tough when the game is on the line.
I'm not sure they all have that like the guys on defense. Curtailing the turn overs would help.
Urban likes to be aggressive and go on fourth downs so that helps with the attitude.
We need to be "bullies" on that side of the ball.

I know this doesn't belong here, but why is there a countdown clock to the Michigan State game??? Only two games matter. The next one, and the one against TTUN. That's the game of the year. That's the one I'm concerned with the most. And that's the one we should be counting down to.

Also, I was at the game and thought both IU and OSU played extremely well. Slap an SEC label in front of those teams and everyone would be salivating at how great that game was between two 4-0 teams and how good it makes the conference look.
