Game Thread tOSU @ Indiana, Sat 10/3 @ 3:30p ET, ABC/ESPN2

While the beauty pageant angle has diminished with the playoff, it's not totally gone. For example, if they dominate everyone and lose a tough one vs msu and are 11-1, there could have been an argument for getting in over a 11-1 tcu or Baylor or Oklahoma. Now there isn't. Also, if they lose a game but still go to the B1G championship game and go 12-1, they have less of an argument against a 12-1 sec or pac 12 team.

In summary, go undefeated and there is no need to worry (although that was the case in the bcs too if your name isn't Auburn). But if you lose a game, style points do matter.

this year, even if they lose one and still win the B1G, they're the defending national champs and a name brand. They'll get in....

I agree that 9/10 times that is true, but it's not hard to think of a scenario where that may not happen. It's not crazy for there to be 2 undefeated teams. If the big 12 and acc has those teams, they are locks. And then if you have a 1 loss Bama and 1 loss USC, I wouldn't consider it a lock. The pac 12 and sec are both considered better conferences. Also, think about last year with fsu. They struggled all year last year. If they dropped one game they would have been #7 in the country.

You're worrying about stuff that no one has control over....

The point remains - win and advance.

Zeke's big day is huge for this offense. It could mean they are starting to get it together.

Holy shit I agree with @MaxBuck on one thing and with @Taosman on another....something weird is happening and I need a beer....

Let me just say that the running game - starting with the handoff to Brax that went for 12 yards immediately preceeding the first big run by Zeke - really started to resemble what we saw in the playoffs last year. If the passing game settles in, watch out.....

I'm not worrying about it. I was just pointing out that it is still a beauty pageant if you drop a game. Other than one fluke year, if you go undefeated you're playing for the National championship even under the bcs formula. So it's not earth shattering that going undefeated results in no need to worry about margin of victory. But assuming a loss, which will happen more often than not, style points will come into effect. Less so than it was in the bcs where a few 1 loss teams were often gunning for one spot whereas in the playoff it's more likely that a few are going for 2-3 spots. But there could be situations where how you looked in your wins will matter if you drop a game.

Edit: and as I said most likely a 12-1 B1G team gets in. But it's not crazy to be in a "beauty pageant" if things fall in a certain way.

Seriously. I'm sure Ole Miss, Georgia, Notre Dame, and UCLA would have loved to play as [Mark May]ty as tOSU on Saturday. Give Indiana credit for almost having our number 3 years in a row, but luckily this isn't horseshoes, hand grenades, or atom bombs.
Bucks blasted them pretty good in 2013. I agree with the sentiment though. I just hope we start to find our groove though.

Well - like I said about this time last year - If this wasn't Ohio State we're talking about and someone like Northwestern or Wisconsin or Iowa, you'd be 100% correct. I don't think last year was an aberration though. The 'name' schools will always get the benefit of the doubt, even if the committee says they don't.

I get what you're saying, but keep in mind we were comparing a 12-1 brand name team with an 11-1 no name team. What happens when it's a 12-1 osu team going up against a couple 12-1 name brand teams? Completely different story. If tcu/Baylor was Oklahoma, and the big 12 had a championship game, my money is on osu being in the cotton bowl last year.

But the Big 12 still doesn't have a championship game...and won't until they expand again....that situation hasn't changed.

Just as importantly, theoretically, this year it would be a 12-1 Ohio State team that is also the defending National Champions.

I am aware that the big 12 doesn't have a CCG. That's why I used an example of a 12-1 osu team trying to get in a playoff with the other power 5 teams being an undefeated big 12 and acc team (12-1 osu gets in over a 1 loss team from these conferences but not undefeated) and then also a 1 loss sec and pac 12 team. Reigning national champion or not, the sec and pac 12 are considered the stronger conferences and the only way a 12-1 osu team gets in would be with a more impressive domination of their schedule. That's currently not happening. Again, just think back 1 year. Fsu looked poor all year, and we're only in since they were undefeated. If they dropped a game they wouldn't have been in the playoff.

Rewatched the game and I have a couple more thoughts...

Lewis is playing phenomenally this year and as this year goes and teams keep keying on Bosa so I expect great things going forward for him.

At the 11:28 mark in the 2nd we had a play sequence that I think is the identity of our offense. First play was a zeke run for 3-4 between the tackles and then the next was a swing pass to Dontre for 12 or so yards. I love stressing the interior and then quickly popping it out wide for an easy 5-100 yards.

As strong as our secondary has been I feel Powell has very inconsistent. Every game he gets picked on and his reputation of horrendous angles of pursuit has oddly continued. He isn't a presence in run support and if the defense is going to go to the next leven we need Powell to play better. Powell often times undercuts out routes due to his pursuit angles and have lead to a few long 3rd and long completions.

The play calling has to improve particularly when we start with great field position or after we seem to have momentum. We had a few chances to END the game on two occasions after going up 13-0. One drive we went three and out with three straight throws and another we threw a bad pick leading to a score.

We need someone to help Zeke out. What we know is we are good at running the ball and inconsistent at best throwing. I know I've been saying this the past few days but I can't stress this enough we need to take the ball out of CJ'S hands a few times to give it to Samuel and Braxton who both had 1 touch each. Cardale must've had 4-5 run calls himself and considering that takes away rushes from the two I just mentioned we should never be calling designed runs for Cardale ever again. They give us nothing 95% of the time anyways.

Once Raekwon went out the defense really struggled. He has been huge for our defense and it shows since we gave up the final 10-17 points without him.

Overall I see on 2nd view what Urban is talking about. We are on the edge of exploding if just stay out of our own way. Two drives in the red zone end with turnovers, we over throw two wide open guys for tds, we have a touchdown called back from penalty (it wasn't even necessary btw), and our offense gave them 10-17 point's due to turnovers.

If we play a clean game we walk away 48-17 at worsea and possibly it even pushes to 55-10 if we don't make any mistakes. Bottom line clean it up with penalties, turnovers, and keep striking the iron while it's hot in regards to play calling (and if zeke gets tired then put a fresh RB in there to continue the on slaught)

However that said we could've said many of these things two weeks ago as well. We've had these issues for some time now in regards to turnovers and penalties. We've just got to finally do something about it. We do that we will be ready for a huge final two games of our season.

Also Zander Diamont and PJ Fleck can just go blow each other for all I care. I am creating a list of people that i cant stand this season and i am happy looking back on it that Indiana came so close. Because it's just that much more painful of a loss
