tOSU - CBS.online NC / Playoff Discussion

Click the "Search" link in the gray navbar and when the menu drops down, click "Advanced". Once in the advanced search page, enter "playoff" in the "Key Word(s):" box and select "Search Titles Only" from the pulldown menu underneath, and then enter "MililaniBuckeye" in the "User Name:" box (leave "Find Posts by User" selected in the pull-down menu). That will find all the threads with the word "playoff" in the thread title that I posted in.

Gotcha.

Thanks man.

Just didn't want you to think I didn't try to search.

Will check back for your response to my above post.

Uh, I-AA, II, and III also have regular seasons you know... :roll1:

Because it's 16 teams every where else (like I said earlier in the thread).
Actually you are not totally correct that all the other divisions have a 16-team playoff...

DI-A = 16 teams
DII = 24 teams, top 8 get first round byes
DIII = 32 teams (10 game regular season)

I know your point is to have a larger pool of teams but I just want to make sure you have the right info.

BTW, I would also like to see a 16 team playoff... it would make for some very exciting football.

Here is how the other divisions choose the participants in their tournaments:

DI-A - 8 Automatic qualifiers, one from each conference and 8 at-large qualifiers

DII - Doesn't state the exact formula but they are chosen by region... 6 in each region with the top two getting first round byes.

DIII - Twenty-one conferences received automatic-qualifying berths. Four berths were reserved for true independents and those teams that are members of conferences that do not receive automatic qualification. The remaining seven berths were awarded to teams from either automatic qualifying conferences that did not win an automatic berth, or remaining true independent teams and teams in non-automatic qualifying conferences.

IF the NCAA were to model DI after the other three divisions they would most likely do a 16 team playoff... an automatic bid for each conference champion (no whining about being left out) and 5 at large bids. There would be no reserved spots for indepenents as there is only a small handful of them... plus if they are good enough they would get an at large anyways.

I was about to split this mess, but I'm not going to do it this time. Keep the discussion on topic and take the personal garbage to PMs.

Also, rep commentary is not needed from anyone on the boards..take those to PMs also.

I think the discussion is back on track, just waiting for Mili to wake up out West and respond.

I doesn't matter how or why the system is inconsisent, only that it is. There will be another instance down the road where there will be three (or more) undefeated teams at the end of the regular season and conference championship games, and thus one or more teams will be pissed off because "the system" screwed them over. You put a 16-team format in place, and no one will give shit about how #17 thinks they got screwed out of the playoffs.

I'll try and get back to this and avoid the trainwreck if I can.

This is the reason why I feel you can do a 1A playoff with just the top 8 teams. I could see the possability of teams ranked 8-16 still being able to win it in 1AA or DII but I just don't see a #9 team having much gripe in D1A.

Here are some specific examples as to why I feel this way based on the final BCS polls the past few years.

2004:11-1 Boise St would have been the odd man out.
2003:11-2 Miami FL is BCS #9.
2002: 10-3 ND is BCS #9
2001: 9-3 Stanford is BCS #9
2000: 9-3 KSU is BCS #9
1999: 10-2 MSU is BCS #9

Just like the NCAA basketball tourney the griping would have lasted about a day from anyone of these teams in these years. The gap between the top 5 caliber teams and the rest of the top 25 teams is much more significant in D1 football than any other sport imo and thats why I feel 8 teams is enough to settle it during any given year.

Also the seeding concept with home games to the higher seed would finally take away a hugely unfair advantage warm weather schools have had for decades.

Also, in my world you start the playoffs the week after the CCG's and with only 8 teams you can have the NC game in the Rose Bowl on Jan 1st every year the way God intended it to be.:wink2: I hate the wild swings in performance the month off produces, even if our coach takes better advantage of it than most.

I don't feel you are seeing the same teams you saw all season long in Bowl games and eliminating the big time off lag would ensure your just seeing the best 8 teams you've seen all year settle it on the field once and for all. Maybe work a week off in there if you can and if i have to make sacrafices to my plan this would be the easiest one for me to give or take but in a perfect world for me there is no December long layoff.

To me, just because the other divisions of football have 16+ teams doesn't mean D1 needs to. Everybody pretty much agrees that the biggest issue is giving every deserving team a chance to play for the NC. How many teams actually have a shot? And more important than that, to me, is how many teams deserve a shot? The Buckeyes, I feel, could easily have won the NC this year if a playoff were in place...but we lost two regular season games, therefore, we didn't deserve a shot.

If we have a 16 team playoff, the college football, as a whole, loses it's luster and glamour. Every game needs to mean something. I think a playoff more than 8 teams would diminish the sport as a whole, and I'm not willing to do that. I do, however, want to see every team that deserves a shot get it.

One problem with an 8 team field is that team from the MAC or WAC (or whatever it is called now) has about a 0% of winning the NC.

To me, that is the biggest travesty with Division 1 football - not every team has a chance at a NC. You have that chance in every other sport. Some people like to say that makes Division 1 football unique - I say it makes it crooked.

I would favor a 12 team tournament with the top 4 seeds getting byes. 12 teams would comprise of the winners of the :
Big 10
PAC-10
SEC
Big 12
Big Least (maybe)
ACC

You have 6 spots left. 4 of them would come from at large entries from the above conferences (including ND - they do NOT get any special consideration just b/c they are an independent). 2 at-large bids from the MAC, CUSA, Mountain West, Sun Belt.
No BCS. No polls. Decided by a 10 person committee just like the NCAA basketball tournament.

An excellent, balanced, fair, well reasoned solution.

College ADs and Presidents will never allow it. :wink2:
